"6:58 are you sure where my spark is?" "Spark" is the name of Tori's first single from the new album, "From The Choirgirl Hotel." Look below for details about this single, including lyrics, promo information, and so on. Below you will also find comments on the song from Toriphiles. |
On June 9th, the "Spark" single will finally be released in the U.S. (I have received many emails telling me it was already out. That is not correct. The version you bought was an IMPORT from the U.K!) Here are the details of the release from Toriphile Rusty, who posted this info to the Precious-Things mailing list:
Cassette single, black tape in cardboard sleeve $3.99 CD Single, pull out tray in cardboard sleeve, $3.99 CD Maxi-Single, in regular jewel box, $6.99

Macthirsty's Lounge B Sides Last stop on the Kufuirstendam:
2. "Purple People" (non-lp track)
3. "Bachelorette"(non-lp track)
The cover of all 3 singles, regardless of the packaging, is the shot of tori's face from the regular issue of the UK "Spark" CD single. You can see listings for these singles at several online stores, such as CDNOW, EQS and CDWORLD.
Tristan Alzial tells me that the single was released locally in Canada on January 2, 1998. He says the single is "the same thing as the English Volume 1 : same cover and B-sides, and there's the "B-side title" as well ("Macthirsty's Lounge B sides. Last stop on the Kufurstendam"). But actually, the CD case is the regular size (like the English Vol.2, not as thin as Vol.1)."
Ryan Obermeyer pointed me to the web page for a vendor called Siren Disc based in Hollywood, California. They were the first people to reveal the track listings for the "Spark" singles in the U.K. Ken Tough reports that the "Spark" singles were indeed released Monday, April 20, 1998, in the U.K. The credits say all songs were written by Tori Amos, except for "Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas," which was written by Martin/Blane, and "Do It Again," which is a cover of the Steely Dan classic - written by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. "Bachelorette" is a new song and is not the same as the one sung by Bjork. Here are some details on each U.K. single. I would like to also thank Mike Gray, Bruce, David, Stuart Ellershaw, and Ken Tough for all the info they sent me on these singles, and to Mike Gray, Erin Dolll, David, and Christopher Scott for sending me scans from the singles and the postcards that came with the limited edition single.
U.K. Spark Single - Disc 1
Disc One (AT0031CD)
Limited Edition U.K. Spark Single - Disc 2
Disc Two - Ltd Ed (AT0031CD2) - Included are three "postcards" which are 2 x 3 inch snapshot-like photographs on card.
There is also a cassette single available in the U.K. It has:
I am extemely excited about the song Cooling. Tori performed that song during a very tough concert in Miami in October 1996. From the recordings I have heard of it, it is an incredible and beautiful song and I am thrilled it is a b-side!
Here are some comments on the Spark singles from Ken Tough:
I'll say that Purple People is probably my favourite yet, but the sound on these singles is absolutely fabulous and
just what I've been waiting for. It's a jazzy bluesy mixture,
full of slow richness. Bachelorette is almost impossible to
transcribe, it is almost a scat singing where lots of the words
are just flubbed over, and seem to be there just to give the
feeling of a smoky jazzy cool feel.
Sorry, I don't know the Björk song, and so can't say if it
is it, but since it is not listed as written by someone other
than Tori, I doubt it.
I was so deeply touched by the rendition of "Have Yourself
a Merry Little Christmas", that I find it hard to put into
words. It is slow, but not overly slow. You just feel
the sadness beneath it, of Tori trying to understand. Not
pain, not anguish, not anger or despair, just a sort of
sorrow and irony and hope. :(
Tori's voice on "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" sounds a bit like Madonna, and a tiny bit like Björk when she says "when". Really neat, really different range of her voice. Bachelorette is a great sound too, but I can't decide what it reminds me of yet. It's a bit like a German/French kaberet type singing in parts. Really really groovy.
Both CDs are jewel boxes (the Ltd ed is standard thickness,
the regular single is single-width). They have paper inserts
with no lyrics or other notes.
On the LTD single, "all songs are by Tori Amos, except
track 2, written by Donald Fagan / Walter Becker.
Published by MCA Music Ltd."
Here are some comments on the Spark singles from Stuart Ellershaw:
Here's a description of the limited edition single - it comes in a full album-width jewel case (compared to the usual slim regular cd single case) and the picture in the inside cover that's visible when you take the cd out
is absolutely beautiful. It is all in blue and Tori is in a little black slinky dress brushing her hair with her fingers with an very seductive look on her face.
The three postcards that come with the cd are like Polaroid's but they?re
superimposed on a white blue lined card with a biro tick and the letter F
cryptically written on them. In one Tori is wearing a green sleeveless
wooly v-neck top and a tight pink PVC skirt that looks like a leftover from
her YKTR days and she looks so much younger than usual in that photo. I
think it?s her straight side-parted hair that makes her look different, and
that innocent "butter wouldn't melt" look on her face! You?d never think
she was in her mid thirties. Marriage must be having anti-aging effect on
her!
Here are some comments on the Spark singles from David:
Have yourself a merry little christmas" is beautiful. "Bachelorette" is a funky middle-eastern sounding tune. It's really fun. At the end she giggles and says "sorry!" sorta like "Toodles Mr. Jim" it's cute. this isn't sounding very articulate but i just wanted to share a few details. The studio version of "Cooling" is lovely. A new middle verse that sounds completely different from the rest of the song, a few lyric changes, and nice layered vocals. That's all =]
Here are some comments on the Spark singles from Kim H.:
I really like "Purple People". I think she is talking in it, to another famous person, asking how they handle fame. Tori would have to be other than human not to be ambivalent at times about fame, and fans' devotion even, even tho she is so nice to us, etc. And the subject matter also kind of reminds me of "Bells for Her" in that she seems to be saying, don't envy me, we all have gifts. The tempo is slow and thoughtful.
I have a report from Toriphile Michael Busser and Christoph Viethen that the "Spark" single in Germany was released on May 4, 1998, which was also the day the new album was released there as well.
The local version of the "Spark" single in Australia will likely not be released until sometime after the album release date, which should be on May 4, 1998. That is according to Ears With Feet Daniel Gee. Several Australian Toriphiles have told me that the Australian "Spark" single will see the light of day on May 25, 1998.
Several reports from The Netherlands say that the main "Spark" single was released there on 24th April 1998.
Dutch Toriphile Ruud van Melick adds that Spark#1 was officially released on friday april 24th here in the Netherlands (they weren't allowed to sell it earlier). The limited edition was available since april 22th in a very large chain of recordstores (Free Record Shop). Not everywhere and not always on the same day. Two small stores specialized in imports didn't expect the singles until friday/saturday (25th/26th)
Spark #1: made in germany / AT0031CD / 7567-84105-2
Spark #2: made in france / AT0031CD2 / 7567-84107-2
Tracklistings identical to UK releases. #2 came with a transparent 'limited edition' sticker on the case and the three cards were included.
Go to my Music Chart Watch Page for the latest on how the "Spark" single is doing on various music charts in the U.S. and the U.K.
April 30, 1998 - Tori's "Spark" video premiered on MTV Latino tonight on the show called "Expo". Thanks to Giovanni for telling me.
April 22, 1998 - Tori's "Spark" video premiered in the U.S. during MTV Live on Wednesday, April 22, 1998. The screen shots above are from the video, and you can see more screen shots on my Spark Video page, which also has a written description of the video.
April 19, 1998 - The "Spark" has already debuted on British TV. Toriphiles Doron, Nina Miller, Lianne Macdonald, and Linette Frances Voller report that "Spark" was shown on 'The Chart Show' in the UK on ITV Saturday morning, April 18, 1998. They also said that on next weeks show (next saturday, April 25th at 11.30am) they'll be having a Tori interview and retrospective. According to the news snippets the slightly sinister video was the idea of director James Brown. He told Tori, "In this song I see you striving, that you're searching for something, having an adventure." Tori said, "Little did I know that I would end up to my ears in mud crawling across Dartmoor." The word on the tree in the video appears to be "skeeter."
April 15, 1998 - Tori's official web site at www.tori.com has added a minute and a half of the "Spark" video to their list of Tori videos they have available in RealVideo format.
April 11, 1998 - You can now hear "Spark" in its entirety in RealAudio at Tori's Official web site at www.tori.com in the Discography section.
There are reportedly 2 different promos out there for "Spark" in the U.S. The first one to be issued had no front photo insert, only a back insert. The second one has a front photo insert. Both CDs have the same 3 tracks I have been told.
April 9, 1998 - Toriphiles Rachel, Alex Dewar and Grey have sent to me a photo of one of the promotional versions of Spark that has been sent to U.S. radio stations. The photo from the single is pictured to the right. (Thanks go to Tim P. and S. Johnting for info about the promo as well.)
This promo version of the Spark single in the U.S. has the number PRCD 8517 and contains 3 "edit" versions of "Spark." The difference between the different versions is very minimal. The track listing is:
1. Edit Version (4:07)
2. Edit Version (4:09)
3. Edit Version (4:09)
Dan Lucy says the only difference he could notice was that in the first two edits, she finishes the last "heeeere" on 00:04, and on the third one, she finished the "heeeere" on 00:06. So, that's why it's a couple seconds longer.
There is at least one promotional version of "Spark" in the U.K. that I am aware of. Toriphile Ben J Cornell says the promo CD contains two versions of Spark One is 4.04 in length and the second is 4.12 - eight seconds longer. The only difference he can hear is that the second has a slightly longer guitar and drum introduction. The CD also includes some images of tori on the photocopier.
If anyone has more details about these promo versions, please email me.
April 16, 1998 - The nice folks at Siren Disc tells me the 2 "Spark" singles from the U.K. will be out on Monday, April 20th. Siren will be shipping them out to customers via Priority mail on Tuesday, April 21st. I imagine other vendors will do something similar.
April 9, 1998 - There are several vendors taking orders for Tori's new single "Spark." The orders are for the U.K. single release, which as will consist of 2 CDS with b-sides (see above.) The CDs will be available on April 20th. Here are some vendors where you can order the single:

Hope this helps people find the song! And remember... REQUESTS DO COUNT. Be polite, don't try to stuff the ballot box, and don't whine "but you said you'd play it" because that's a sure way to get your request scratched off. DJ's do keep track of requests... even if they don't play them... and it *does* help determine how much a song gets increased in play week after week.
TORI AMOS: Spark (East West AT0031CD)
Tori bursts back on to the scene with this powerful first single from her
forthcoming album From The Choirgirl Hotel. Her trademark piano is there
but the addition of a band, drums, loops and electronic effects add a
further dimension. It's a very fine, multi-layered song which will see her
first return to the charts since the Professional Widow remix smash. The
singer will be touring from May, and is winning interest from national and
regional radio, while Top Of The Pops has already recorded a session.
Rating: 2 thumbs up (out of 2. The Dotmusic web site showed a rating of 4 "stars")
A recent issue of NME Magazine in the U.K. reviewed "Spark." Thanks to Skecksi for alerting me to this:
I know what you're thinking. You're wondering, 'Am I allowed to like Tori Amos?' As a journalist I can confirm that any woman who suckles a pig on her album sleeve and paints herself gold in public must be walking a dangerously
uncool aesthetic tightrope, for which she deserves our eternal respect.
'Spark' is a better reason, though, starting off typically windswept and
wuthering, but then getting all insomniac, prickly and panicked as it
contemplates the fact "She's addicted to nicotine patches". God I know what
she's going through.
- Johnny Cigarettes
"Spark'' (4:05) Atlantic
The timing for an Amos release has never been better, as the mainstream
has apparently caught up to the singer/songwriter's quirky brand of pop
music. She meets fans halfway with this first single from the imminent,
much-anticipated new album, ``from the choirgirl hotel,'' by infusing
the song's complex, piano-driven structure with a sticky chorus and
ample use of scratchy angst-rock guitars. Amos continues to explore the
far regions of her vocal range, yelping and ranting at whim. However,
she counters that with welcome softer nuances that serve the song well.
Add an insinuating, tribalistic midtempo drum, and you have what could
be a major pop breakthrough for this eternal critical darling.
Toriphile Joey Brymer says he has obtained a 4 track promo-sampler of Tori's new album, and it contains the lyrics to "Spark" with it! I sincerely thank Joey sending these lyrics to the Dent:
she's addicted to nicotine patches
she's addicted to nicotine patches
she's afraid of the light in the dark
6.58 are you sure where my spark is
here, here, here
she's convinced she could hold back a glacier
but she couldn't keep Baby alive
doubting if there's a woman in there somewhere
here, here, here
you say you don't want it agian
and again but you don't really mean it
you say you dont want it
this circus we're in
but you don't you don't really mean it you don't really mean it
if the Divine master plan is perfection
maybe next i'll give Judas a try
trusting my soul to the ice cream assassin
here, here, here
you say you don't want it again
and again but you don't really mean it
you say you don't want it
this circus we're in
but you don't you don't really mean it you don't really mean it
how many fates turn around in the overtime
ballerinas that have fins that you'll never find
you thought that you were the bomb yeah well so did i

Shortly after the debut of "Spark" of WHFS in Washington D.C. on March 13, 1998, I received reports of the song being played on radio stations all over the United States. The official word from Tori's management (according to the RDT Fanzine) was that the radio stations were playing the song prematurely. Ears With Feet Charlie Poole talked to the Asst. Program Director of radio stationWTTS in Bloomington, IN in mid to late March 1998, and was told that Atlantic Records phoned the Program Director yesterday and asked them not to play Spark if they received a copy. They said that a clerk in the shipping department sent out promo copies in error. Atlantic was said to be asking the radio stations that were playing Spark early to stop. But many stations continued to play the single. What was interesting is that some stations were bragging about the fact that they were playing the song too early. Some are even making jokes about cease and desists orders. Toriphile Monicat De Maio reported to the Torinews mailing list that radio station 104.1 WBCN in the Boston area had a leak weekend! They played Spark many times one weekend and they keep airing the sound bite, "This is what a cease and desist order sounds like..." I guess some radio stations didn't take the threat of legal action very seriously.
At least 2 radio stations in the U.S. Debuted "Spark", the new single from Tori's upcoming album. WHFS (99.1 FM in the DC/Baltimore area) aired "Spark" at about 6:47 PM on Friday, March 13, 1998. DJ Bob Waugh substituted for the regular DJ at that time, Johnny Riggs, and played it on a part of the show called "Riggs Early Withdrawal." Later that same day at at 6:03PM Pacific time on Friday, March 13th, radio station KROQ in Los Angeles debuted "Spark" as well! By the way, the Linda Tripp thing on WHFS was a JOKE! ;) Since the debut of this song on these 2 radio stations, the song is now being played on other radio stations across North America.
I have placed the reaction and commentary on "Spark" from various Toriphiles on a Spark Commentary Page.

Have yourself a Merry little Christmas
Have yourself a Merry little Christmas
Here we are as in olden days
Through the years we all will be together
Let your heart be light
From now on our troubles will be out of sight
Make the yuletide gay
From now on our troubles will be miles away
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more
If the fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough
And, have yourself a Merry little Christmas,
now.

And Peggy got a message for me
And I know I have been

So then i thought I'd make some plans

This is cooling
Faster than I can
But do I want to be happy

And said i know that you don't like me much
Let's go for a ride
And this ocean goes round and round that pineapple tree
worth giving up these kisses
These, theeese kiss-esssss
From Jesus
And i've heard every word that You have said
And I know i'm driven, driven like the (double voice) snowwww,
but
Cooling (cooling)
Faster than i can
(this is)
(cooling)
Heyyy yes, Faster than i can (this is cooling)
Heyyy, This is cooling (this is)
This is cooling (cooliinnng)
From Ian Mullins:
Maybe I didn't like to hear
So then I thought I'd make some plans
And Piggy got a message for me, from Jesus
And I know I have been
This is Cooling
Oh do I hate watching this?
And don't we love something fresh
Woman you got too many brambles
But I always liked a good storm
So then love walked out to [like]
And is your place in heaven,
And Piggy got a message for me, from Jesus
And I know I've been
Oh, but,
But I still can't believe Speed Racer is dead
But fire thought she'd really rather be water instead
And I've heard every word, that she was saying
Driven like the snow
Faster than I can
This is Cooling
Faster than I --
Or do I want to be heard?
Anything new, virgin
Hiding under these bushes
Woman you got too many brambles
Always good for a storm
And said I know that she don't like me much
Let's go for a ride
This ocean goes round and round that pineapple tree
worth giving up these kisses?
These, yes
These kisses
And I've heard every word, that she was saying
Driven like the snow
This is cooling
Faster than I can, hey
This. Faster than I can
Cooling
Hey, this is Cooling
This is Cooling
From Ken Tough:
In the mornin' you go gunnin'
Let's go.
Chorus:
Well you know she's no high climber
Chorus:
Now your swear and kick and beg us
You go back, Jack
For the man who stole your water
And you fire 'till he is done in
But they catch you at the border
And the mourners are all singin'
As they drag you by your feet
But the hangman isn't hangin'
And they put you on the street
Then you find your only friend
In a room with your two timer
And you're sure you're at the end
Then you love a little wild one
But she brings you only sorrow
All the time you know she's smilin'
You'll be on your knees tomorrow
You go back, Jack
You go back
Do it again
Wheel's turnin' round
and round
You go back Jack
Do it again
That you're not a gambling man
then you find you're back in Vegas
With a handle in your hand
Your black cards can make you money
So you hide them when you're able
In the land of milk and honey
You must put them on the table
Do it again
wheel turning round and round
back you go
come on to me
wheel turning round
beautifully
wheel turning round
