Below you will find the latest information I have on how the album "from the choirgirl hotel" and some of its singles are doing on various music charts. |
Clitoral Blue Pea posted to the Dent forum that Tori's "Jackie's Strength" single made it to the following peak positions on Billboard Magazine's charts in the U.S.. I assume this is the regular Jackie's Strength single and not the remix single that came out later.
Hot 100 Singles: 54
Singles Airplay: 42
Single Sales: 61
Clitoral Blue Pea posted to the Dent forum that Tori's "Raspberry Swirl" single made it to the following peak positions on Billboard Magazine's charts in the U.S. I am not sure, however, what is meant here by the "Raspberry Swirl" single. The only main U.S. single that included Raspberry Swirl was the third single, which was listed on the cover as the "Cruel" single. It also included the Lip Gloss Version of Raspberry Swirl. So it is possible that this is the single Billboard is refering to.
Hot 100 Single Sales: 38
The Jackie's Strength remix reached #1 on Billboard's Dance/Club Play Chart in the March 27, 1999 issue. The song took 6 weeks to reach that position. The song entered the chart on February 20, 1999. Here is a summary of the positions it has held on this chart as of the April 3, 1999 issue:
34-19-11-5-2-1-3
I am not sure how Tori felt about being the top Dance Diva in the nation that week, but the Dent would like to congratulate her!
On the Billboard 200 Album chart in the U.S., the album debuted at #5 with an estimated first week sales of 153,000 copies. The debut will be seen in the May 23, 1998 issue of Billboard. You can find an article about Tori's high debut on the Sonicnet Music News Of The World web site, which includes some quotes from me! Tori's album "Boys For Pele" actually debuted higher at #2 when it was released in 1996. However, in terms of number of units sold for the first week, "from the choirgirl hotel" has been Tori's highest selling album to date, besting Tori's previous top sales debut, 1996's platinum BOYS FOR PELE, by 40% according to Atlantic Records.
Current Position: For the week of August 8, 1998, the album falls to #114.
Chart summary for the 12 weeks it has been on the chart: 5-18-28-36-47-52-59- 70-79-82-94-114.
In the June 25, 1998 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine (with Tori on the cover!), Tori's "from the choirgirl hotel" album was #11 in Rolling Stone Readers Top 20 chart. (Thanks Manda & JiLL.)
Ben-David reports that in the July 9-23, 1998 double issue of Rolling Stone (with Madonna on the cover), Tori's album rose to #2 on the Rolling Stone Readers Top 20 chart!

Many thanks to Kenny Hobbs for keeping me informed on Tori's chart positions in Radio & Records. The positions listed below are for the middle of May 1998.
Alternative Top 50:
Tori is up 4 notches to number 18 with 1583 spins this week. five stations added SPARK, bringing the total up to 85. she also appears on the Most Increased Plays with an increase of +320 spins this week.
Adult Alternative chart:
Tori's also up to number 18 with 290 spins last week. one station added the song, bringing her total up to 27.
Nathan, Mike Gray and Christoph Viethen report that Tori's new album debuted at #6 on the UK CIN Albums chart, for the week ending May 10 1998 (see http://www.nme.com/charts/ for the official UK charts pages.)
Nathan tells me that "From the Choirgirl Hotel" dropped from #6 to #23 in its second week on the UK CIN Top 40 albums chart... (Week ending May 17, 1998.).
Thomas Lauritsen tells me that "From the Choirgirl Hotel" dropped to #26 in its third week on the UK CIN Top 40 albums chart... (Week ending May 24, 1998.).
Ken Tough, Mike Gray, Anthony Holloway, Nathan, and Malcolm Rhodes report that "Spark" entered the U.K. CIN Singles Chart at #16 for the week ending April 26, 1998, which is not bad considering the relative lack of airplay on the radio there. However, in its second week, "Spark" dropped from #16 to #38 on the UK singles chart for the week ending May 3 1998. It then fell off the singles chart all together. The UK charts are pretty fast moving anyway, so this is not too unusual, though it does mean that "Spark" was not a huge hit in the U.K.
Ruud van Melick sent me a summary of how Tori's album, "from the choirgirl hotel" has done on some of the more popular album music charts in The Netherlands:
weeks 20 - 31 (May 16 - August 1 1998)
Rabo album top 100 (taken from the Rabo top 40 charts):
51, 34, 35, 39, 44, 68, 81, 88, 95, 97, 98, 100
Mega album top 100 (taken from the Mega Top 100):
27, 24, 29, 38, 38, 39, 66, 72, 74, 88, 100, gone
These are the two biggest and most popular lists in the Netherlands. The 'Rabo top 40 charts' are maybe a bit more official (they exist 34 years), The 'Mega top 100' exists 6 years.
Spark never made it to the singles charts (not counting a third chart in our Veronica TV-guide), but it did appear for several weeks in the Tip Parade (part of the Rabo charts), which indicates possible future entries in the singles chart.
Christoph Viethen reports that the new album debuted on the main German Album chart at #13 on May 13, 1998. That also appears to be the position at which the album will peak on the charts, During the following weeks, the album had these positions:
May 13th: #13
May 20th: #15
May 27th: #28

Thomas Lauritsen looked at the charts on the teletext on MTV Europa on May 15, 1998 and FTCH was number 9 in Norway and number 10 in Ireland. Spark has been on the Hot Rotation list on Danish national radio program 3 for the last couple of weeks. This radio station has two charts, which the listener choose. One is mainstream, the other very alternative. Spark was number 1 on the alternative list 3 weeks ago, and has been number 2 the last 2 weeks.
Thomas reported again on May 24, 1998:

According to Katja Laitinen in late April 1998, "Spark" was #16 at a Finnish radio station called Radio Mafia playlist. Radio Mafia is a national channel, it can be heard throughout Finland.
The Anti-Hit list/chart at the Jam! web site is really an alternate top 10 composed by John Sakamoto. "Spark" has entered this list at #10. John really likes the song, saying, "Instantly recognizable but packing a new sonic wallop, this first, widely leaked single from Amos's breathlessly awaited new album is as convincing as anything she's written."
