Neil Gaiman News: Neil's first feature film, "MirrorMask", has begun shooting

Missy attended a reading/signing that Neil Gaiman did in Chicago, IL on June 7, 2003, and she was told by Neil that his first feature film, called "MirrorMask", has just begun shooting! Neil Gaiman wrote the script for the film, and it is being directed by Dave McKean. For more information about this movie project, go to muppetcentral.com. The story idea for this movie grew out of conversations about a possible sequel to Henson's 1986 movie "Labyrinth".
In addition, I have redesigned The Dent's Neil page, where I have added this as well as previous items of interest to Neil fans.

Reminder: RAINN is still looking for hosts for the Happy Birthday Tori parties this year

As you may remember, for the last two years, RAINN has helped Tori fans all over the U.S. (and the world!) to take part in Happy Birthday Tori parties. These events are fun and raise money for RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network). RAINN is still looking for people who are willing to be hosts for the 2003 birthday bashes. They will be able to send anyone who is interested host kits that can get you started. If you are interested and would like to find out more, or want to request a host kit, you can email Kelley Bevis at kelleyb@rainn.org. You can also check out RAINN's Happy Birthday web site. (It says it is from 2002, but there is 2003 info there!)
A Tori event calendar is now available for iCal on the Macintosh

Michael Gehrig has kindly created an iCal calendar that any Macintosh user with iCal can subscribe to that contains upcoming Tori events like TV/Radio appearances and such. Much of it is based on the Dent Calendar that is on the ToriNews page. If you are a Macintosh user and want to subscribe to it, click here and then double click the .ics file that is downloaded. (Earlier this week I pointed out another ical calendar that is posted at icalshare.com that lists all of Tori's upcoming Lottapianos tour dates. They are both worth checking out!)
Help RAINN with 'Get Carded Day' on September 23, 2003

RAINN will be implementing 'Get Carded Day' on Tuesday, September 23, 2003. Volunteers from RAINN member centers, campus groups, and supporters will be distributing 500,000 wallet-sized cards with information about the National Sexual Assault hotline, in addition to tips on how to reduce your risk of sexual assault and what to do if you are sexually assaulted on campuses all over the country. RAINN is trying to get various organizations and individuals on college campuses involved as well. Basically, they are asking for people to commit to distributing a certain number of cards on their campus. [Click for details...]
Toriamos.com nows says tickets for the West Palm Beach, FL show will go on sale Sat, July 12, 2003

Toriamos.com is now reporting on their tour schedule that tickets for the September 4, 2003 Tori concert in West Palm Beach, FL at the Sound Advice Theatre will go on sale Saturday, July 12, 2003. We were earlier told an on sale date of June 12th, but that did not happen. There is still no listing for the show at Ticketmaster or the Sound Advice Theatre web site, but the July 12th date feels reasonable to me. Update: I just added a complete transcript of what Tori said during her interview clips on this program. Tori was one of the artists interviewed on the TV show "Controversy" which was broadcast on CMT (Country Music Television) in the U.S. It was shown for the first time on April 20, 2003 and has been shown on CMT many times since, including June 11, 2003. The subject of this episode of "Controversy" was the song "Indian Outlaw" by Tim McGraw. Click for full details about the episode, a complete transcript, and some screenshots. Atlantic Records press release mentions a "Greatest Hits" collection from Tori coming later this year

We had seen evidence this was coming, but this is the first time I have seen it mentioned in any kind of "official" way. I found an Atlantic Records press release at businesswire.com and dated June 11, 2003. The main subject of the release was to tout the recent success of Atlantic, especially with the high debut of Jewel's new album "0304". At the end of the press release, it says, "Atlantic is on track to continue its strong performance through the rest of the year, with new releases on tap from a slate of platinum-plus artists, including: Nappy Roots (sophomore album due August 26th), P.O.D. (third Atlantic set due November 4th), Kid Rock, Brandy, and greatest hits collections from Tori Amos and Stone Temple Pilots." This press release does not mention a date for Tori's album.

A June 10, 2003 press release states that Cotton Incorporated and J.Jill will team up in July 2003 for the Nature of Cotton promotion, a multi-faceted marketing campaign which features in part a compilation CD called "The Nature of Rhythm," which includes various artists such as Tori Amos, Alice Peacock, Macy Gray, and Shawn Colvin. (I am not sure which Tori song will be on the CD yet, but I am nearly positive it will not be anything rare!) Reserved ticket prices are $40.00 per person. Lawn ticket prices are $20.00 per person. The concert will begin at 7:30pm. Tickets will be sold at Ticketmaster.com. Tori was one of the artists featured on the VH1 show 'Rock Bodies III', which debuted for the first time in the U.S. on Monday, June 9, 2003. Tori's segment started about 25 minutes into the show and lasted for 2 1/2 minutes. I now have both screen shots from this program and a complete transcript of Tori's segment. Ticketmaster.com has added a listing for Tori's show in Columbus, OH on August 20, 2003 at the Promowest Pavilion. Tickets go on sale Friday, June 13, 2003 at 10:00am. I have included this info on the Dent's Lottapianos Summer 2003 Tour Schedule Page. They state that the show itself starts at 6:30pm, but a reliable source tells me that is actually what time the gates open, and the show itself starts at 7:30pm. CC.com has also added a listing for this show, and it agrees with the 7:30pm start time. CC.com also reveals the ticket prices: Lawn - $29.50 and Reserved - $39.50.

I wanted to make you aware of a few news items related to Neil Gaiman:
- Neil Gaiman has a new book coming out in August 2003 called "The Wolves in the Walls" which includes illustrations by Dave McKean. It is a graphic novel for all ages. You can pre-order it at Amazon.com.
- In September 2003, Vertigo will publish a hardcover graphic novel called THE SANDMAN: ENDLESS NIGHTS. This is the first new Sandman book in 7 years! "Endless Nights presents seven tales - one for each member of the Endless - that reveal strange and surprising truths about the Sandman and his uniquely dysfunctional family."
- Marvel comics will release a new mini-series from Neil called 1602 beginning with #1 in August 2003. You can read a little more about it at previews.diamondcomics.com.
- Check out a new book called "Neil Gaiman's the Sandman and Joseph Campbell: In Search of the Modern Myth" by Stephen Rauch. This book is a scholarly examination of Neil Gaiman's work, and "includes detailed analysis of his best-selling "Sandman" and "Death" series, a look at his work's relationship to Joseph Campbell, and such topics as "The Relationship of Dreams and Myth in Campbell, Jung, and Gaiman's Sandman". Toriamos.com just updated their tour schedule listing again, and now we have on sale dates for the last three cities that we did not know about earlier. They say that the Toronto, Ontario and N. Charleston, SC shows will both go on sale Fri, June 20, 2003. The West Palm Beach, FL show goes on sale Thursday, June 12, 2003. (That seems like an odd date to me, and some people think they meant June 21 instead. But for now I will stick with their June 12th date.) Lastly, Toriamos.com changed the ticket sale date of the Las Vegas, NV show from June 14th to Sat, June 21, 2003. No additional details about these sale dates were given. Amy tells me that radio station More Music 104FM in the Washington, D.C. area is not only advertising Tori's concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion on August 27, 2003, but they are also giving away tickets all weekend long! Ticketmaster.com has added a listing for Tori's Concord, CA show at the Chronicle Pavilion on July 29, 2003. Tickets will go on sale Sunday, June 8, 2003 at 10:00am. Earlier in the day they also had a presale listed for Sat, June 7th, but that has been removed, which leads me to believe that the presale will not happen now. Ticketmaster's listing for the August 10th Chicago, IL show states there will be a fan club presale starting Wed, June 4, 2003 at 10:00am and lasting until Fri, June 6, 2003 at 10:00pm. Tickets then go on sale to the general public on Saturday, June 14, 2003 at 10:00am. I find this odd that Chicago has a presale when the other shows that have already gone on sale have not, but emails to some people from the Toriamos.com mailing list or JAM productions have confirmed that this presale is for real. You will need the presale password from Toriamos.com in order to purchase tickets at Ticketmaster.com during the presale. I just found a new listing at Ticketmaster.com for the August 16, 2003 Cleveland, OH concert at the Tower City Amphitheater. It confirms that tickets go on sale for that show on Sat, June 7, 2003 at 10:00am. Tickets range in price from $19.50 to $42.50.
