  • "1000 Oceans" is another single from "to venus and back" and was sent to Pop, Hot AC and Modern AC radio in the U.S. in September 1999. The single was also released commercially in the U.S. on September 7, 1999. That makes "1000 Oceans" the second U.S. single from Venus, even though it was released only 2 weeks after the commercial release of the "Bliss" single and Maxi-single! The 1000 Oceans single first released contained "Baker Baker" as a b-side. Then, on September 28, 1999, the CD5 Maxi-Single to 1000 Oceans was released in the U.S. That version was an enhanced CD which contain both "Baker Baker" and "Winter" live as b-sides. 100 Oceans was also released as the second Venus single in Australia, Germany and Sweden, and perhaps other places in Europe. Below you will find full details about the 1000 Oceans singles. I also have details on the 1000 Oceans video.

1000 Oceans Single In Germany, Sweden & Europe

    Updated March 20, 2000 - 1000 Oceans In Germany

Remo Luca and Tripp Gwyn told me that a German "1000 Oceans" single was released on Monday, January 10, 2000. However, despite having the same cover as the U.S. and Australian 1000 Oceans singles, it looks like the b-sides on the German release differ. Keith Yap reports that the German single, which he found as an import in Singapore, contains live versions of Hey Jupiter and Upside Down, the same b-sides that were on the U.S. Bliss single. The German single also is not an enhanced CD and contains no videos like the U.S. or Australian versions.

Here are some additional reports on this German 1000 Oceans single:

    From Klaus Braun:

I'm working at the music department of a German radio station and just received my promo copy of Tori's "1000 Oceans" single. So I can confirm that it is actually backed with the live versions of "Hey Jupiter" and "Upside Down". It's not an enhanced CD with any videos on it, though (and the copy I have is not a special promo edition but the version intended for release - a release date is not specified in the info material that came with the single, but so far I didn't find it in any shop here).

    From Kaarina:

You asked on your site info about this German 1000 Oceans single. I bought it recently for my little sister and also thought I could write and clear some things about this single. So, it really does contain live-versions of Hey Jupiter and Upside Down, same as US Bliss. It comes for a thin jewel case and colour of this cd is slighty blue. Also one thing is that it isn't HyperCD so it DOES NOT contain videos for Bliss and 1000 Oceans.

Updated March 20, 2000 - 1000 Oceans In Sweden and Rest Of Europe

The following info comes from George Blair IV:

"1000 oceans" has been released as a single in Sweden. The single is in a thin jewel case as many import singles are. The cover art is the same and the only difference is the back of the single is just the inside photo. The tracks, however are the live versions of "Hey Jupiter" and "Upside Down", which are of course the b-sides to the domestic [U.S.] "Bliss" single.

This sounds identical to the German 1000 Oceans single that some Toriphiles have reported seeing. (See above.) It is always hard to determine where singles found in Europe come from, so that is why information on them is sometimes hard to process. For example, Toriphile Andy said he found an import from Holland for 1000 Oceans as well.

In any case, this means that there is a single for 1000 Oceans being offered throughout Europe which has the same cover as the U.S. 1000 Oceans single but contains the same b-sides as the U.S. Bliss single. These singles do not contain videos on the CD like the Australian and U.S. versions of the 1000 Oceans single. (See below.)

    1000 Oceans CD5 Maxi-Single Released In Australia

Updated March 20, 2000 - Daniel Nolan informs me that on Monday, January 10, 2000, "1000 Oceans" was released as a CD5 maxi single in Australia. This was the second Australian single from Venus following Glory Of The 80s. The single is similar to the 1000 Oceans CD5 maxi-single that was commercially released in the U.S. in late September 1999. The b-sides are live versions of Baker Baker and Winter, and it has the Bliss and 1000 Oceans videos on the CD in the HyperCD video format. (Where you have to be connected to the internet to see the video.) The Australian single is actually in a THIN jewel case, unlike the US release which is in a THICK jewel case. Therefore the paper insert is a bit different; it's all in one piece. The only distinguishable difference from the U.S. version as far as the CD itself goes is the text "Digital Audio Recordings Australia" in the middle. The catalog# is 7567845352. The copyright information on the single says, "Designed and Manufactured by Warner Music Australia," so it is a legitimate, domestic release! A review of this Australian single appeared in a publication called "Time Off" in January 2000. They state:

(Thanks to Ben from the OzTori mailing list for reporting this):

"Tori Amos - 1000 Oceans (Atlantic)

It's good to know Tori Amos is out there. She's one of the few songwriters who relishes the opportunity to write music and lyrics that are equally interesting and innovative. '1000 Oceans' is a slow soft track with a kind of motherly feel to it. This could almost be a lullaby and if anyone could pull off a lullaby this intricate, it would be Amos. For fans, this CD also has a multi-media component and a series of live tracks on the flipside."

    1000 Oceans Sheet Music

March 20, 2000 - Andy tells me that you can find sheet music for 1000 Oceans in some stores. It features glossyish paper on the front & back cover and regular paper stock on the inside. (It's put together like a portfolio.)

Where Did "Baker Baker" & "Winter" Come From On The U.S. & Australian Versions Of This Single?

Becky Wall informs us that Baker Baker live on the 1000 Oceans single is from the Penn State show on November 21, 1998.

Most people say that Winter is from the Columbus, OH show on November 29, 1998.

    The 1000 Oceans Video

September 29, 1999 - People who purchase the 1000 Oceans CD5 Maxi single in the U.S. and Australia get an enhanced CD that includes the Bliss and 1000 Oceans video. (See details on this Maxi-Single below.) This will be the first time that many people have seen the 1000 Oceans video. I must say I really love it. It is very visually striking and in some ways quite powerful. My friend Danica Knox was kind enough to take a bunch of screen shots from the video, which you can see on my 1000 Oceans Video Page. You can read more about this video on that page as well.

An Atlantic news item states that the 1000 Oceans video is being shown on M2 and The Box in the U.S. You can also see it at Atlantic's Instavid web site.

    The U.S. 1000 Oceans CD5 Enhanced Maxi-Single

While the regular 1000 Oceans single was released in the U.S. on September 7, 1999, a separate 1000 Oceans CD-5 Maxi Single was released in the U.S. on September 28, 1999 (Atlantic 84535-2) and that maxi-single includes 2 live non-LP tracks, "Baker Baker" and "Winter". This CD5 Maxi-Single is also an enchanced CD, which contains both the Bliss and 1000 Oceans videos. Emma + Andy were the first to tell me this. Nyssa Morse has the maxi-single and gives this description:

The single has the same art that you've pictured on your web site for the other version of the single. It does have Baker Baker and Winter live, it seems like they were both taken from the same show since the applause doesn't stop. Um... the CD contains both the 1000 Oceans video and the Bliss video, in a HyperCD video format, which I wasn't familiar with. You have to run it on the internet, which is interesting, and upon installing the CD your browser will direct you to the Atlantic Records site to register. The videos are very nice, by the way, as I haven't seen them before. All the plugins that you need to run the videos are on the disc itself, which makes installation easy.

The cover of the CD-5 is the same as the cover of the regular CD single shown below. The only difference is that the CD5 Maxi-Single comes in a jewel case and the regular CD single comes in a cheaper cardboard packaging. The back photo to the CD5 is also the same as the regular CD single, except for the track listing which says:

    1000 oceans (album version)
baker baker (live non lp version)
    winter (live non lp version)

Exclusive bonus video with this CD

Place This Cd In Your Computers Cd Rom Drive To Install Hyperlock Software Which Will Enable You To Access A Special Bonus Video Via The Tori Amos Website. Available Only To Owners Of This Cd."

They then briefly give the requirements and instrcutions for the CD.

"1000 Oceans" CD Single Commercially Released In The U.S. On September 7, 1999

September 7, 1999 - This single, which was the regular single as opposed to the CD5 maxi single, was released in the U.S. on September 7, 1999, only 2 weeks after the release of the Bliss Single & Maxi-Single. Several Toriphiles found the single in stores a week or so earlier. (I do not know if there will be a 1000 Oceans release in Canada.) This regular single has 2 tracks on it and is available as a CD, cassette, or vinyl 45. The CD single is numbered Atlantic 84534-2. Here is the track listing for the single in all formats:

    1000 oceans (album version)
baker baker (live non lp version)

Becky Wall informs us that Baker Baker live on the 1000 Ocean single is from the Penn State show on November 21, 1998.

Below you can see scans of the front and back of the 2-track CD Single. (The CD5 Maxi single that was released a few weeks later has the same artwork.)

Front Of The U.S. 1000 Oceans CD Single

Back Of The U.S. 1000 Oceans CD Single

The writing on the back of the single says:

Written and Produced by tori amos
      Published by Sword and Stone

      Recorded and Mixed by
Mark Hawley and Marcel van Limbeek
      Assisted by Rob van Tuin

1000 oceans from the Atlantic album #83230 to
venus and back available on 2-CD/cassette set

Alex Pearlman was the first to tell me that 1000 Oceans would be a single. One of the cover stories in the August 21, 1999 issue of Billboard Magazine covered the online sale of "Bliss." The article mentioned that "1000 Oceans" would be released commercially on September 7, 1999 in the U.S. with two more unreleased live tracks. The press release that I have for the online "Bliss" download also says, "Both "Bliss" and "1000 Oceans" will also be commercially released in CD5 and CD, cassette, and vinyl single versions." The first single released on September 7, however, only had one live b-side, "Baker Baker" There was a separate, enhanced CD5 Maxi-Single that was released later on September 28, 1999 in the U.S. that contained "Winter" and "Baker Baker" as b-sides. You can find information about this CD5 Maxi Single here.

    1,000 Clowns!

October 1, 1999 - Several people alerted me to a hilarious misprint that you can find on the net concerning Tori's 1000 Oceans single. barnesandnoble.com has 1000 Oceans maxi-single listed as "1000 Clowns". One can only chuckle at this...

The Official Lyrics To 1000 Oceans

September 28, 1999 - Here are the official lyrics to 1000 Oceans as listed in the CD booklet for "to venus and back":

      1000 oceans

      these tears i've cried
      i've cried 1000 oceans
and if it seems i'm. floating.
      in the darkness
well, i can't believe that i would keep.
      keep you from flying
and i would cry 1000 more if that's
what it takes to sail you home
sail you home sail you home

i'm aware what the rules are
but you know that i will run
you know that i will follow you
over silbury hill through the solar field
you know that i will follow you

and if i find you. will you. still remember
      playing at trains
or does this little blue ball
      just fade away.
over silbury hill through the solar field
you know that i will follow you.
i'm aware what the rules are
but you know that i will run
you know that i will follow you

      i've cried 1000 oceans
      and if i'm. floating.
      in the darkness

The 1000 Oceans U.S. Promotional CD

September 7, 1999 - A few weeks ago, someone sent me what they said was a scan of the 1000 Oceans promo single which I placed on the Dent. It turns out that cover was a fake and had to be removed from the Dent. It is always frustrating when I am sent incorrect information and I would like to apologize to my readers. The scan below shows the real cover to the 1000 Oceans promo single, which has been sent to various radio stations in the U.S. Thanks to Sydne and Karla Canales for sending me the scans. Click on the cover to see it larger.

Apparently there are 2 versions of the promo CD floating around. One has the cover you see below and the other does not have a cover at all. The CDs have different numbers (PRCD 9050 & 9032) but both only contain the track "1000 Oceans."

Comments & Lyric Guesses From People Who Have Heard "1000 Oceans" Before It Was Officially Released

Read the official lyrics to 1000 Oceans here.

    From BeulahBoi@aol.com

August 27, 1999 - I heard this song for the first time last night and it immediately brought me to tears. The love of my life left this morning for Japan to study there for four months and hearing this song on the eve of my loss had such incredible significance. She's touched me deeper here than anything before. I can't hear this song without tearing up. It's absolutely beautiful.

    From Beth Winegarner

August 16, 1999 - I'm just now listening to a better recording of "1000 Oceans" and I just noticed something: she is NOT singing "over single prarie hill," as it's listed on the Dent. She's singing "over Silbury Hill" which is a very different animal! Silbury Hill is a big manmade hill in Britain, not far from Avebury (yet another amazing, incredible place). It was used for purposes of worship, much in the same way the Glastonbury Tor was, but to something of a lesser extent.

(Of course, now I've gone back to the Dent and noticed that someone else has already pointed this out -- but I haven't seen any mention of it here. :P)

Silbury Hill is really a sight to behold. Mikewhy's got a photo of it up at the Dent, here: http://www.thedent.com/jpgs/tvab/SilburyHill.JPG. It's outlawed for people to climb on it, but how can you resist? When we saw in in March people were crawling all over it. The hill is HUGE. It's actually quite flat on top, also, which you can't really see in the picture.

Here's a bit more info on the site:

      from http://www.crystalinks.com/sillsberry.html

"Silbury Hill is the tallest man-made prehistoric mound in Europe. It is part of the complex of Neolithic monuments located just south of the village of Avebury in Wiltshire. It is a massive artificial mound with a flat top. It was built in three stages. The first began in 2600 BCE. The last phase comprised the building of six concentric steps or terraces of chalk which were then covered with chalk rubble, flints, gravel, and finally soil to form a cone-shaped mound."

The terraces, also called lynchets, are used in spiritual work -- or were in ancient times -- as a kind of labyrinth. Mounds like this one and the Tor were meant to be climbed in a circular fashion; the spiral in which one walks leads one toward a spiritual center, and was believed to take one to a different spiritual realm entirely. There are many paths to the top -- today we most often, in metaphorical and literal terms, take the quick, straight path. But taking the spiral path (which is mirrored in the "Spiral Dance," which many pagans do during ritual to transport participants into another mental state. I've done it, and believe me, it works) leads one to another place entirely, which was the whole purpose of these hills, as far as geomancers are concerned.

Silbury Hill is part of a larger framework of sites, which includes not only Avebury (which is said to be the womb center) and the Sanctuary (which is a smaller circle with a path running between it and Avebury -- the path is said to be a fallopian tube, and the sanctuary an ovary). Some of these other works, including their configuration, can be viewed here:

      http://witcombe.sbc.edu/EMSilbury.html

My friend Sig Lonegren, who is a well-known geomancer, told me a lot more about the site than I can remember at this time. He runs a site called Mid-Atlantic Geomancy at http://www.geomancy.org which has all kinds of articles and information about places like this, especially in Southwest Britain.

On the site, Diana Griffiths writes about Silbury Hill:
      http://www.geomancy.org/ezines/ezine_6/ezine63a.html

"England is covered with stone circles each with their own Sunrise or Moonrise alignment to major turning points of the year indicating importance of that energy in that place at that time. At the Avebury megalithic complex in Southern England is a monumental map of a journey around the wheel where a site for each quarter and Cross quarter day of the annual cycle is represented. Ripeness and harvest yields the Lammas celebrations of the start of August at Silbury Hill, a mound the shape of the pregnant woman's belly ready to birth rising out of a gentle rolling landscape. When nature returns to the earth West Kennet Long Barrow with its five inner chambers offers the complete darkness and density of the mid-Winter point."

It should also be mentioned that a number of crop circles tend to come up around these sites. The ones on the cover of the Led Zeppelin box set, for instance, were formed in this area. I cannot stress enough how magical a place this is, and how important sites like this are to Tori, judging from what she's said about them. (Look to her interview with Westwood One to hear more about her feelings on Stonehenge and Avebury).

There are some photos available of various crop circles, including one with Silbury Hill in the photo, here:

      http://www.geomancy.org/sacred-crops/page-1.html
      http://www.geomancy.org/sacred-crops/page-3.html

It's my sense, too, that Silbury Hill was also viewed as a portal. I've already talked about how walking up it in a spiral formation took people to another mental state. But the old Celts believed that mounds and hills were portals to other worlds entirely. Celtic mythology is rife with stories about people going to sleep on a mound and waking up to find that they're in the faery realm. There is also a ton of material relating these old mounds and alignments with UFO visitations -- but my sense is that UFO phenomena is really another version of faery lore. The stories are just too similar.

All that having been said, I think it's incredibly meaningful that Tori has included this site in a song, one about love and loss -- when she says "I will follow you over Silbury Hill" it's almost like saying "I'd follow you to the underworld and back." Not literally (we could get into a long debate over how the otherworld/faery realm got TURNED INTO modern concepts of the underworld and Hell, but that's another topic for another day). It's a strong statement, and for me, makes the song itself that much stronger and more interesting.

    From Randy Uhl

August 16, 1999 - I am listening to a copy of "1000 Oceans" right now as I type. I wanted to type and listen simultaneously so I could better explain what I am hearing. This is a lush ballad no doubt written when her husband was away from her side. The main instrument in "1000 Oceans" is the piano but if one listens carefully one can hear a constant rhythmic background that closely resembles seconds ticking away on a clock. There is such sadness and longing in her voice as she sings "I'm aware what the rules are, but you know that I will run. You know that I will follow you..." and maybe I am reaching here, but her phrasing reminds me of the tides washing in and out. After my 1,OOOth time of listening to "1000 Oceans" here are my lyric guesses. I have quite an ear so I think these are pretty accurate. If there are any corrections I would love to be made aware of them at clyde@netins.net by your devoted readers.

      "1000 Oceans"

      these tears i've cried
      i've cried
      a thousand oceans
      and if it seems
      i'm floating
      down this well

      i can't believe
      that i would keep
      keep you from flying
      and i would cry
      a thousand more
      if that's what it takes
      to sail you home
      sail you home
      sail you home

i'm aware what the rules are
but you know that i will run
you know that i will follow you
      over Silbury Hill
      through the snowy field
you know that i will follow you

      and if i find you
      will you still remember
      playing at the trains
      all doubts they slip
little blue ball, just fade away

      over Silbury Hill
      through the snowy field
you know that i will follow you
i'm aware what the rules are
but you know that i will run
you know that i will follow you

      these tears i've cried
      i've cried
      a thousand oceans
      and if it seems
      i'm floating
      down this well

      i can't believe
      that i would keep
      keep you from flying
      so, i will cry
      a thousand more
      if that's what it takes
      to sail you home
      sail you home
      sail you home
      sail...
      sail you home

      *NOTE*
Silbury Hill is the tallest prehistoric man-made mound in Europe and one of the world's largest. It is in Wiltshire, England which I believe is close to where Tori and her husband frequently visit. Nothing has ever been found on Silbury Hill: at its core there is only clay, flints, turf, moss, topsoil, gravel, freshwater shells, mistletoe, oak, hazel, sarsen stones, ox bones and antler tines. The base of the monument is 167m (550ft) in diameter and it is pefectly round. Its summit is flat-topped and 30m (100ft) wide.

Moses B.Cotworth, at the beginning of this century, stated that Silbury was a giant sundial to determine seasons and the true length of the year. More recently, the writer Michael Dames has identified Silbury Hill as the winter goddess but he finally aknowledges that the monument remain a stupendous enigma. It seems quite appropriate that Tori include this particular hill don't you think?

    From Mike

August 16, 1999 - You are probably getting tons of e- mail about "1000 Oceans", but here is my review of this most wonderful of Tori songs. The song moved me so much that I was on the verge of crying, the only thing that kept me from breaking down was the joy I was also feeling. It was such a mix of emotions that words can not describe it. The best way to describe it is to think of the first time that "Hey Jupiter" hit you with all its sorrow, then mix in a dose of "Tear In Your Hand" and then spin around in a whirlwind of wild joy and dispair at the same time. I do not know why it reminded me of "Tear In Your Hand" because it did not particulary sound like it, it was just the first song that I thought of. After hearing "1000 Oceans", I could not listen to another Tori song for the rest of that night and the next day, it was just so powerful that I felt that I needed to give it the respect it deserved. Incidentally, I heard it on Star 95.7 in Tampa, Fl.

    From Jim and Pam

August 15, 1999 - I live in New Hope, Minnesota and I heard 1000 Oceans a few days ago at about five o'clock when they debuted it. I'd kept calling and harassing 104.1 The Point asking if they could play me 'Bliss,' and they told me the new one would come on soon, so naturally I was surprised when they played this song instead. It's a really beautiful ballad with strings and all.

I, too, have lyrics for the song (which should be pretty accurate; seeing as how I've heard it over twenty times) and they are a little different than the previous ones. Here goes.

      These tears I've cried.
      I've cried a thousand oceans.
      And if it seems
I'm floating in a damaged well.

      I can't believe that I would keep
      Keep you from flying.
      And I would cry
      a thousand more
      if that's what it takes
      to sail you home.
      Sail you home.
      Sail you home.

I'm aware what the rules are,
but you know that I will run.
You know that I will follow you.
Over the sea you're buried in,
      through this old field.
You know that I will follow you.

      And if I find you
      will you still remember
      playing at the trains?
      Or does this li-little
      blue ball just fade away.

Over the sea you're buried in,
      through this old fields.
You know that I will follow you.
I'm aware what the rules are.
But you know that I will run.
You know that I will follow you.

      These tears I've cried.
      I've cried a 1000 oceans.
      And if it seems
I'm floating in a damaged well.

      I can't believe that I would keep
      Keep you from flying.
      So I'll cry a 1000 more
      if that's what it takes
      to sail you home.
      Sail you home.
      Sail you home.
      Sail.
      Sail you home.

August 13, 1999 - I heard this song today. My girlfriend (of almost 2 years) moved away today. I'm sad today. And I love this song.

      1000 Oceans

      These tears I've cried
      I've cried 1000 oceans
And if it seems I'm floating
      Down this well
      I can't believe
      That I would keep
      Keep you from flying
And I would cry 1000 more
      If that's what it takes
      To sail you home
      Sail you home
      Sail you home

I'm aware what the rules are
But you know that I will run
You know that I will follow
      You
      Oversee your burial
      Through this old field
You know that I will follow
      You

      And if I find
      You
      Will you still remember
      Playing at the trains
Or does this little blue ball just
      Fade awayÖ

      Oversee your burial
      Through this old field
You know that I will follow
      You
I'm aware what the rules are
But you know that I will run
You know that I will follow
      You

      These tears I've cried
      I've cried 1000 oceans
      And if seems I'm floating
      In the darkest well
      I can't believe that I would keep
      Keep you from flying
So I will cry 1000 more
      That's what it takes
      To sail you home
      Sail you home
      Sail you home
      Sail
      Sail you home

[It sounds like she's just singing an extra "-ing" and "dow-" at the
"floating down" parts, and an extra "lit-" before "little blue ball"]

August 13, 1999 - i wanted to let you know that today at 5pm, Impact 89 FM here in East Lansing Michigan played the song '1000 Oceans'. It was number 5 on their daily countdown of the days most requested songs! Impact is the alternative college station here, and they play just about anything you want. I was just really surprised to hear 1000 oceans instead of bliss! at any rate, it might be cool if you let people know that they can request 1000 Oceans at Impact 89, and Impact has a web site that allows you to listen to the station via the internet using streaming real audio. The web page to access Impact 89 is http://www.wdbm.msu.edu/Listen.html

August 12, 1999 - I just heard 1000 Oceans on a San Francisco based radio station called "Alice" (KLLC, 97.3 FM). The song was BEAUTIFUL! Alice is currently running a contest where listeners can win tickets to the Concord Pavillion show on September 19, if they are caller #9 when a Tori or Alanis song is played.

Also, tonight at around 9:40 PM (Pacific Time) Alice is having Tori as their "Tour Artist Spotlight." They will be playing either Bliss, 1000 Oceans, or maybe both? They will also be giving away some kind of prize (a CD I think). So, just wanted to let you know!

August 12, 1999 - I finally finished moving and got to listen to the radio today. Since 94.7 The Mix plays Tori and is giving away tickets to the October show, I thought I'd call the night D.J., Larry The New Guy (yes, that's supposedly his name) and see if he could play "Bliss" for me. Imagine my surprise when I asked "Could you play the new Tori Amos single?" and he said "1000 Oceans? Yeah, I'm playing that at 10 tonight." I listened, of course, and just after 10 I heard the glorious sounds of Tori's newest creation drifting through my car speakers. What can I say? The song was fantastic. Tori's vocals sound a little different than normal at first, but I think they fit the song. Afterwards, Larry played some listeners' reactions to the song, and they were uniformly positive, so I'm certain we'll be hearing her again in Austin.

August 12, 1999 - I have heard this song and I must tell you it left me speechless. The emotional quality of Tori's voice in this ballad, the flowing melody, the strings, and the lyrics bring me to tears every time. It is one of her most effective and amazing ballads in my opinion, and an indicator that Tori is as potent as ever as a songwriter. I think "to venus and back" is going to an incredible album. I loved "Bliss" when I heard it, but "1000 Oceans" has touched my heart..

August 12, 1999 - Here are my guesses on the lyrics to 1000 oceans! I really love this song, unlike many people! I don't understand what everyone doesn't like about it! Its beautiful!

      1000 Oceans by Tori Amos

      These tears I've cried.
      I've cried a 1000 oceans.
And if it seems I'm floating
      In dark (???)
      Down this well.

      I can't believe that I would keep
      Keep you from flyin'.
      And I would cry
      A 1000 more,
      If that's what it takes
      To sail you home.
      Sail you home.
      Sail you home.

I'm aware what the rules are.
But you know that I will run.
You know that I will follow you
      Over single prairie hill,
The wind is on the field.
You know that I will follow you.

      And if I find you,
      Will you still remember
      Playing at the trains?
      Or does they slit (???)
      Lay down blue ball (???)
      Just fade away.

      Over single prairie hill,
The wind is on the field.
You know that I wll follow you.

I'm aware what the rules are.
But you know that I would run,
You know that I will follow you.

      These tears I've cried.
      I've cried a 1000 oceans.
And if it seems I'm floating.
      In dark (???)
      Down this well.

      I can't believe that I would keep
      Keep you from flying
      So, I wll cry a 1000 more,
If that's what it takes to sail you home.
      Sail you home.
      Sail you home.
      Sail
      Sail you home.

August 11, 1999 - 104.1 The POINT, in Minneapolis, MN played '1000 Oceans' today at abour 5:05 PM CT time. It was excellent. Ok, here are the lyrics. I'm pretty much positive that they are right. The few lines I didn't know, I just put questions marks there. Comments on the song: It is really a great song. It has a drum loop that kind of sounds like the one of the 'Hey Jupiter' Dakota version. Otherwise, it is pretty much just strings and piano. It kind of reminds me of 'Northern Lad.' It's a slow song, and it is quite sad. But, it is wonderful, and it makes me SO excited for the new CD!!! Enjoy!

August 11, 1999 - The Point 104.1 in Minneapolis is playing 1000 Oceans as you already know, but they are saying it's Tori's 1st released single from the new album??? They mentioned the time they were going to play it on my way home from work yesterday so I raced home to record it and fortunatly got the whole song on tape! It's an increadibly beautiful song, very lush and melancholy. Every time I listen to it I feel like crying. I can't wait for everyone to hear it.

August 11, 1999 - just wanted to tell you i heard 1000 oceans here in minneapolis today (on 104.1 the point...their website is 1041thepoint.com)...i caught about the last half or so...funny thing is, i think i heard it a couple of days ago too, and actually had NO clue who it was! i remember saying "who is this, some jewel impersonator?" i'm not too keen on it right away...her vocals leave a little to be desired. it's very breathy, light...*shrug* the instrumentation is incredible though, very lush, lots of strings and the piano fits in WONDERFULLY. i really didn't hear much, and i was close to crying...but that's what i remember. thought you might be interested.

August 11, 1999 - Minneapolis, MN: 104.1 The point played "1000 Oceans" today. Unfortunately, I didn't catch it from the beginning, and at first, I didn't realize it was Tori. It seemed like Tori was sitting across the piano from me. A very sincere piece. (My reception wasn't the best, but I was entranced nonetheless :)

First Report Of "1000 Oceans" Being Played On U.S. Radio

August 6, 1999 - Bambi reported on my online forum that "1000 Oceans" was played Friday, August 6, 1999 on Alice 97.3 in Northern California. Bambi says, "It was sweet and slow, emotional but not overdone. I remember a line something like, ' I have cried 1000 oceans.....I will cry 1000 more if it will bring you home...'" That radio station is having a contest today where you can win tickets if you call the station every time they play a Tori or Alanis song.
