Tori mentioned in PLAYBILL

(December 29, 2000) - Corey Sullivan reports:

i went to see a production of GODSPELL at the Shubert Theater in Boston yesterday. The Playbill program mentions Tori, however inappropriately... In an article on the reworking of the music, the author writes, "As with the rest of the new production, Schwartz (music and new lyrics) and musical director Michael Lamoire wanted to 'update' the musical arrangement to give it a contemporary sound. The tunes will be the same this time around, but they'll sound more like the Dave Matthews Band or Tori Amos than the Who or Joan Baez (there's even a hint of 'N Sync." Well, I'd say it was a generous pouring of N Sync with no Tori whatsoever... I couldnt find any traces of her in the music... i would never recommend the show either, but just thought id mention...

Gideon's Crossing

(December 28, 2000) - Michelle (Pelegrrl) Verna reports:

During Monday Night Football this Christmas, there was a commercial for the ABC show Gideon's Crossing. They played about 2 seconds of "Precious Things" at the end. It was the wail-y part after the chorus, and was so abstract it took me a second to place. A Very Tiny Tori Sighting.

Wither

(December 28, 2000) - alejandro layjay reports:

i was reading through a christmas gift i recieved, a book called WITHER and who should i see but TORI! the context was something like an all women radio show, which one of the lesser characters in the book airs, and she says something along the lines of,

"and now the new hit from tori amos".

the book was published in 99. hmmm. perhaps concertina!? hmmm. interesting none the less. (Note from Mikewhy: I think this is the book at amazon.com.)

Agoraphobic Nosebleed album "Split"

(December 28, 2000) - Laurel reports:

I work at an independent record store, and I noticed that the art on the front and rear of this Agoraphobic Nosebleed album called "Split" is disturbingly reminiscent of Tori's Little Earthquakes. The front of the album shows the head of a fairy/angel with red hair being crushed by a huge hand. But the worst Tori-reference (?) is on the rear of the album. The same red-haired fairy is crouching in a wooden box (just like Tori on the Little Earthquakes album cover) with her head drooping and her hands bound. What a terribly disturbing image!!! You can see the cover of this album at cdnow.com.

TV Guide Crossword Puzzle

(December 28, 2000) - Edmir2 reports:

I was doing the cross word puzzles in the December 2000 issue of TV Guide crossword puzzles, and I came across two Tori sittings. One was "Singer Tori." "Amos" is the answer naturally. The Other was "Spelling or Amos." "Tori" is the answer of course.

ChannelV in the Philippines

(December 28, 2000) - Tom "Boyblood" reports:

I wuz watching channelV philippines (a music channel in Asia, in case u dont...) and I wuz surprised to see their commercial about Tori Amos. It was shown in black and white, where a girl, an avid fan of Tori was talking about her obsession to her. They where alternating the video of "bliss" and I think "jackie's strength" with the girl talking. (How i wish I was her.) She's talking about something like having all her albums, some biographies and other stuff. then she talks about why she likes her and her music; and then how she like to be depressed at times. The commercial lasted for about 2 minutes. It was really great to see some "Tori things" here in the philippines these days.

demisecomics.com

(December 24, 2000) - Laura C. reports:

If you go to demisecomics.com, you can find a comic with Tori's version of "Losing My Religion" playing in the background!

Fisher and the Radio Morning Show

(December 24, 2000) - Karac reports:

On Tuesday morning [December 19, 2000] I was listening to Radio Morning Show. The guest that morning was "Fisher." She was discussing her career and she brought up Tori. Fisher said that she was on the "Great Expectations" soundtrack which also included a long awaited track from Tori. She went on to say that so many Tori fans loved Fishers song that they began questioning where they could find more of Fishers music. Unfortunately Fisher did not have a record deal and she did not have any albums out....but, because she had received so much support from Tori fans and an awesome Tori website that began promoting Fisher, they put a few MP3s up on the website. She credited a lot of success on Tori's fans!!

I thought this was very interesting...plus the station that interviewed her doesn't even play Tori or Fisher. Hmmm...

"The Bill" in the U.K.

(December 22, 2000) - Claire Campbell reports:

The music of Winter is being used for a trailer of a programme called 'The Bill' in the UK. There are no vocals, just the introduction but its nice to hear all the same.

More "As It Happens"

(December 20, 2000) - Ken Tough reports:

Seems there must be Tori fan on the As It Happens (CBC radio) production team! Today's [December 19, 2000] piece on the media-inspired Florida ballot review was introduced by the first few bars of "Winter". Torispotters can stay tuned to http://cbc.ca/asithappens.

VH1's "Don't Quote Me"

(December 20, 2000) - Marco Nieves reports:

This is a very miniscule Tori sighting but she was featured on VH1's "Don't Quote Me" show. They were showing R.E.M's video for "Everybody Hurts" and they were quoting artists that thought Michael Stipe was sexy. Tori said "I love the way Michael smells". Like I said, miniscule. :)

Armand Van Helden article from DMA (Dance Music Authority) Magazine

(December 20, 2000) - Tim (Star Tat) reports:

Tim reports on seeing Tori mention in an article about producer and remixer Armand Van Helden that appeared in DMA (Dance Music Authority) Magazine and was written on March 31, 1998. He found this article posted in the Dance Music section of the About.com web site. They refer to Tori as a "folk singer" and talk about how Armand remixed "Professional Widow" for Tori. Here are the three parts of the article that mention Tori:

Every year seems to bring a new hot hand in the DJ/producer world. As 1994 belonged to MK, 1995 was all about Wink and 1996 belonged to Masters at Work yet again, last year was all about New York-based Armand Van Helden. Everywhere you turned, people were grooving to his beats. For the last half on '96 into late '97, having Armand remix your song was the same as getting King Midas' seal of approval. CJ Bolland "Sugar Is Sweeter," Tori Amos "Professional Widow," Rolling Stones "Anybody Seen My Baby," Nu Yorican Soul "Runaway," Sneaker Pimps "Spin Spin Sugar," two for Puff Daddy, "Been Around The World" and "All About The Benjamins" -- all kinds of records that in other hands would have been just remixes. With Armand, they were THE version. The one you heard in clubs, the one you heard on the radio -- the one you heard...

...Just when everyone counted Van Helden out is when his Phoenix rose again. It was the summer of '96 and it was for the most unlikely of sources -- folk singer Tori Amos. Johnny "D" DeMairo, long a fan of Armand's, gave him an acappella for Amos' "Professional Widow," a massively dejected weirdo folk song about... well, no-one really knows. At any rate, Armand dropped his filtered synth, hard-drums sound of previous remixes, opting for a more funky, bassline-heavy take -- and for once he used a good portion of the vocals. With this mix, he had married the basslines of jungle with that of house and the genre known as speed garage was born. People responded. Quickly following with the CJ Bolland remix, people who six months ago had called him 'over' were now calling him their 'favorite remixer.' This of course was only the beginning of what was to come...

...Van Helden isn't phased by much. Grammy nominations, constant calls from all over the world to DJ, lucrative remix offers -- stuff that would make most producer/DJ's ecstatic doesn't affect him one bit. "I consider my Grammy nomination as low food chain. I think everything I do is small time." Basically, the man thinks big. A lot bigger then the CEO of American Express. A lot bigger than a Big Mac, even A lot bigger than how much the "gotta be big" Tori Amos remix was. To him, being big-time is winning an oscar award. "You got an oscar sitting in your house, that's BIG. People say I'm big, that I'm the man, but I'm the man to WHO?"...

Select Magazine

(December 20, 2000) - bluebeardtoxic reports:

i thought you might like to know that Tori was mentioned on pg.92 of Select Magazine. I'm not sure but i think it was Limp Bizkit's guitarist who mentioned her??? sorry i couldn't tell you the exact thing. i saw it while browsing through mags at the bookstore but i didn't have time to read it in detail cos the clock struck "12" and i had to leave. i saw the pg. no. just in time and i hope someone will post that article. it looks rather interesting.

Lecy adds to this report:

I'm not sure about the magazine or anything but the person that probably spoke of Tori would probably be Limp's bass player, Wes Borland.. He's spoken of her in other articles in magazines like Hit Parader or Circus.. He sites her as one of his top 10 musical influences and has spoken about the glory of FtCH before.

Note from Mikewhy: Can anyone tell me the exact issue date and any additional details?

"Glamour Girls: The Illustrated Encyclopedia"

(December 20, 2000) - Delocrat reports:

There is a book called "glamour girls: the illustrated encyclopedia" by steve sullivan and it lists all the bombshells. at any rate, tori amos is 483 on a list of 1000 (even beating out catherine zeta-jones, angelina jolie, olivia hussey and princess diana). you can order this book online at www.amazon.com ISBN: 0-312-20651-8 published by st. martin's griffin.

Judging Amy In Singapore

(December 20, 2000) - Mark reports:

I am an avid fan of Tori Amos from Singapore, and just yesterday, I was watching Judging Amy and suddenly, the intro to Caught a lite sneeze came up. this was for the advertisement for the show. I was rather shocked and elated at the same time. similarly, at a previous episode's advertisement, there was the intro to iieee. just liked to share with you that this happened, esp in singapore since tori amos is really like a rarity.

eros luciferchilde adds:

To add to that guy from sg who said that there was a trailer for the TV series Judging Amy, and it featured "iieee", well, for yet another episode, "Winter" was featured. Someone working in the promo dept of the Television Corporation of Singapore must be one hell of a Tori fan.

Lighting Designer Simon Sidi

(December 18, 2000) - Ciccone4 reports:

Tori is mentioned at the Official Apple web site in the Creative section. She is mentioned in an article on the group Depeche Mode, and more specifically, Lighting Designer Simon Sidi, who designed the group's stage show. Here are the parts that mention Tori:

"Depeche Mode has always had the most up-to-date, state-of-the-art... just the biggest light shows you could have," smirks Lighting Designer Simon Sidi. "When I got the job I knew there was no way I was going to light it that way and I told them so and they agreed. I gave them what I though they needed: not a traditional light show, but something much more interesting." Sidi, having worked with everyone from Diamanda Galas to Tori Amos, inherited a stage designed by designer/stylist great Anton Corbin, but still managed to give their red velveteen bordello stage look lights that could transform a stadium into a bedroom. And did it all from a Mac. A PowerBook to be exact. "It took me two weeks to design their show, but the whole show was designed on a Mac," Sidi continues. "The Tori Amos show I did was solely Mac-based. Video and lights.

Note from Mikewhy: I wonder which tour he designed? The 1996 Dew Drop Inn perhaps? I know that Macs were instrumental in that tour!

The Marginal Prophets sample from Tori Amos

(December 18, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

I found the following paragraph about a musical act called The Marginal Prophets in the December 15, 2000 edition of the Salt Lake Tribune in the Club Notes section:

Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy: The Marginal Prophets could teach Puff Daddy a thing or two about creative sampling. While Puffy slaps some deadpan lyrics over easily recognizable samples and calls it a "new" song, this six-piece San Francisco rap-rock act samples licks from acts like King Crimson, Camper Van Beethoven and Tori Amos and name-checks such un-Puffy things as Utne Reader and "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern." Not that The Marginal Prophets are too intellectual for their own good; indeed, some of their sex-laced rhymes are absolutely juvenile. In a good way. The Marginal Prophets play Liquid Joe's, 1249 E. 3300 South, Salt Lake City, Saturday [December 16, 2000] at 10 p.m.

I am not aware of what Tori songs they sampled or which of their songs have these samples...

Canadian National Radio's "As It Happens"

(December 18, 2000) - Ken Tough reports:

Kindof an odd little sighting, another tiny piece of the web of Tori's musical influence.. The canadian national radio (CBC) news program "As It Happens" had a short segment on the death at old age of a great canadian broadcaster, Allan McFee. The intro to the piece was the first few instrumental bars of "Cooling".

Sexual Etiquette 101

(December 18, 2000) - Joe Lovoi reports:

Here's a silly little Tori Sighting...if you're in need of anything to post, here's your ticket.

Here at Bard College in New York, a book called "Sexual Etiquette 101" is handed out to all the freshmen at the beginning of the year. On the cover is a picture of a guy reaching toward a pile of condoms sitting on a typical desk in a college dormitory. (How many people actually have piles of condoms on their desks, I don't know) Anyway, there's all this typical parephanalia there, like textbooks and postcards etc, and right next to the pile of condoms is a copy of "Little Earthquakes".

Is there symbolism here? I don't think so. The book is published by Bridging the Gap Communications, Inc., 1995

Tori Amos "impersonator" 00 Goddess

(December 13, 2000) - Miss Kitten reports:

I was randomly surfing people's Live Journals, when I came across this mention. I thought it was worthy of a Tori sighting, cause it was kinda funny! You'll have to check it out, cause there's a picture next to the paragraph, which explains the Tori reference!

    http://www.livejournal.com/users/livejournaldish

    Here's what was said...

"Meanwhile, Tori Amos impersonator (available for your next party!) 00Goddess can't seem to get enough lately, which is to say she hasn't gotten any. E-mail, that is. E-mail. Dirty, dirty birds, all of you."

    And then her response was...

"Will I forever be saddled with this Tori Amos thing? I mean, she's cute and all, but I look nothing like her!"

Singer Michal in Seventeen Magazine

(December 12, 2000) - Fixable939 reports:

In the January 2001 issue of seventeen with Jennifer Lopez on the cover, new singer Michal makes a quote about Tori. The quote is found in the "In Her Bag" article in the beauty section. "With her golden mane and model good looks, Michal has definite similarities to pop stars like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. But 19-year-old Michal . . . has others performers on her mind. 'I prefer comparisons to Fiona Apple or Tori Amos,' says the New York City native."

Twist.com Quiz

(December 12, 2000) - Cherdy reports:

There is a quiz, located at the Teen mag site, Twist.com, called "Who Is Your Ideal Celeb Gal Pal?" It mentions Tori as an answer for one of the questions:

"Yikes!! You have a huge audition tomorrow. Whose CD are you blasting to get yourself psyched?

What do you mean, CD?! You requested a private concert with Enrique Iglesias, and he’s only allowed to sing soothing ballads.

Smash Mouth. Their fun, funky tunes always put a smile on your face.

Tori Amos. Her music mellows you out, and her way unique style inspires you to be your cool, creative best!

Kittie. Their supercharged grrl rock gets you totally revved up—you want this part, and no one will stand in your way!"

TuneTrivia.com

(December 8, 2000) - Laurahey reports:

I was visiting TuneTrivia.com and one of the questions on the Rock/Pop music quiz was:

What group or artist recorded the following album?
    From The Choirgirl Hotel

    Bryan Adams
    Glenn Frey
    Debbie Gibson
    Tori Amos

MTV Uncensored (U.S.)

(December 8, 2000) - Laurahey reports:

There's a show on MTV this week called "MTV Uncensored". There's a short segment about former DJ Jesse Camp in which he sings a duet with Tori! The title of the song is escaping me at the moment (Note from Mikewhy: It was Aerosmith's "Dream on") but it was great -- Tori looks gorgeous! The show is going to be on again tonight (December 8, 2000) at 6PM, Sunday, December 10, 2000 at 11PM, and Friday December 15, 2000 at 9AM and 6PM. Pass it on if you like!

Tori sang this little duet with Jesse Camp on MTV Live, which originally aired on April 24, 1998. You can read more about that and see scans of Tori singing with Jesse in my TV/Radio archives.

Winter 2000 issue of Bust

(December 7, 2000) - Debbie reports:

I just picked up the winter 2000 issue of Bust (a magazine about third wave feminism) and there is mention of Tori!

the article is called Feminism 101: a guide to our kind of classics, and it reviews books, films and music that the author deems feminist "gems." In list of about 20 cd's the author talks about Tori: "I would like to point out Tori Amos who has a very 'I-was-a-victim-but-now-I'm-not' approach." The picture on the side of the page is a stack of about 20 cd's which includeds the Hey Jupiter Ep.

Boston Globe article about how male musicians are pushing female musicians out of the spotlight.

(December 5, 2000) - marla tiara reports:

There is an article in the December 3, 2000 edition of the Boston Globe about how male musicians are pushing female musicians out of the spotlight. It was written by Joan Anderman. You can read it at the Boston Globe web site. Here is the part that mentions Tori:

For anyone who believes that cultural evolution is a linear progression, that enlightenment is cumulative and equality built brick by brick on its own hard-won foundations it's time to think again. It's been three years since the much-heralded Year of the Woman in popular music. In 1997, Lilith Fair Sarah McLachlan's landmark concert tour outsold testosterone-loaded Lollapalooza, H.O.R.D.E., and the Furthurcq Festival, upending the common notion that an all-female concert bill wasn't a viable commodity. That year, there were more women on Billboard's Top 100 charts than in any other period in history.

It wasn't limited to the earthy singer-songwriters of Lilith, either. From idiosyncratic folk-punk Ani DiFranco to blues-rocker Joan Osborne, well-heeled rabble-rouser Courtney Love to petulant poet Fiona Apple, bad-girl-next-door Liz Phair to rock mystic Tori Amos, women's voices permeated pop music. Rolling Stone published a ''Women in Rock'' special issue, which was tucked on newstands alongside Spin's ''The Girl Issue.''

Fast forward to 1999, and a sprawling technology park in Rome, N.Y. Fred Durst and his band Limp Bizkit are spewing a barrage of sexist brutality from the main stage. The mosh pit becomes a roiling clubhouse for uncorked boys, and the women who enter it are groped, mauled, or in several alleged instances raped. If Lilith catapulted women front and center in the popular culture, Woodstock '99 flung them not merely back into the wings but to a far darker place, where men rule with iron and if it suits them, violent fists.

A year later, Durst and a plethora of aggressive male bands dominate rock radio and sales; there are no women on this week's Modern and Mainstream Rock radio charts. Most of the females getting heavy airplay are pristinely packaged pop singers likesuch as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Faith Hill, and Destiny's Child, all of whom conform to a stereotypical male ideal of unthreatening female sexuality.

Hardly enjoying the fruits of women's political and creative labors, we are in the throes of a massive Lilith backlash.

The web site "Red and Proud"

(December 5, 2000) - Electrolite reports:

MTV True Life special "I'm on Ecstasy"

(December 5, 2000) - migennes, Rory and Katie Calbeck report:

On the MTV series "True Life" tonight (November 30, 2000), there was an episode called "I'm On Ecstasy". During a segment where a girl named Lynn is talking about feeling dead and asking her boyfriend if she's dead, they played the intro to "Bliss" in the background. I didn't see the whole thing, just that small segment in passing ( the music caught my ear), so I don't know if the whole episode was about Lynn or if that was the only Tori snippet.

Barenaked Ladies cover of Cornflake Girl

(December 5, 2000) - Courtney Allen reports:

While on Napster I stumbled across Barenaked Ladies - Cornflake Girl, and obviously my courisity got the better of me. I downloaded it and it was an radio interview with the band and after about 2 minutes they sang a piece of Cornflake Girl and in true Barenaked fashion they switched the words around a bit. Its really cute. I suggest you check it out. I don't know when this was taped, so all this may be old news to you.

This is a bit of what they sang, "I never was a cornflake girl, thought it was a big solution, hanging with the redneck girls....." The cover lasts about a little over 30 seconds.

The Lettuce Ladies

(December 5, 2000) - Sarah reports:

I just wanted to let you know that I was reading the Lettuce Ladies.com web site and came across a Tori references. The Lettuce Ladies are from PETA and they travel around wearing only lettuce and educate people about vegetarianism. In their profile section one of the ladies, Julia, says her turn ons include "nineteenth century classical music (especially Mendelssohn), Tori Amos, Nine Inch Nails, ballet, theater, opera, surfing, running, playing the piano, reading, spinach salad, and her two companion cats."

Percussionist Valerie Dee Naranjo

(December 5, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

I found a press release at the Yahoo! Finance web site about an album of sacred music from around the world being released by Beliefnet.com. Here is a portion of the press release, where it mentions Tori in relation to percussionist Valerie Dee Naranjo:

Beliefnet.com -- the Internet's premier destination for religion and spirituality -- today announced the release of the CD entitled Belief: A Collection of World Sacred Music, the first in a series of branded products developed to meet the spiritual needs of its multifaith global audience.

The collection reflects the diverse content of the site, featuring a range of sacred music, from Balinese trance rituals to Turkish Whirling Dervish tradition to African-American gospel.

The collection includes selections by the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir and world-renowned percussionist Valerie Dee Naranjo, who currently performs with The Lion King musical and Saturday Night Live band, and has arranged and recorded with popular musical artist Tori Amos.

"Women and Popular Music" by Shiela Whiteley

(December 5, 2000) - Finnish Toriphile Outi Koivisto reports:

Thought I'd let you know about this book that includes stuff on Tori Amos... My former tutor Sheila Whiteley, Head of research at U. of Salford (who is one of the most wonderful personalities I've ever met) recently released a book called Women and Popular Music. I know she's a great fan of Tori's and I once wrote an essay on Ms. Amos which she loved. This is the introduction to the book from routledge-ny.com:

"From Janis Joplin to P.J. Harvey, Women and Popular Music explores the changing role of women musicians and the ways in which their songs resonate in popular culture. Through a series of artist case studies Sheila Whiteley examines the interaction between feminist debates and music culture over thirty years of pop history.

Sheila Whiteley begins by examining the counter-culture's reactionary attitudes to women through the lyrics of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. She explores the ways in which artists like Joplin and Joni Mitchell confronted issues of sexuality and freedom, redefining women's participation in the industry, and assesses the personal cost of their achievements. She considers how stars such as Annie Lennox, Madonna and k.d. lang have confronted issues of gender stereotyping and sexuality, through pop videos for 'Justify My Love' and 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)', and looks at the enduring importance of the singer- songwriter through artists such as Tracey Chapman. Lastly, she assesses the contribution of contemporary artists including Tori Amos, P.J. Harvey and Courtney Love, and asks whether the Spice Girls are just a 'cartoon feminist pop group' or if they provide positive role models for teenage girls."

I'm writing a MA thesis on Sexuality, corporeality and rock (which is going to include stuff on Tori) and I just ordered the book and can't wait to read it! There's at least one another woman student in Finland who just finished her thesis on Tori Amos - it's an analysis on the search of womanhood reflected in Tori's songs Talula, Caught a Lite Sneeze etc.. It should soon be published in the net as a read-only version (only in Finnish I think), and it should be of interest to at least the Finnish fans (check http://docuweb.jyu.fi/, author's name Mari Piirainen).

"Rock & Roll Tarot" by Chris Paradis

(December 5, 2000) - Gawen LeFae reports:

There is a tarot deck out called the "Rock & Roll Tarot" by Chris Paradis. One of the cards features Tori! There is a review of the deck here, pictures here, and the deck can be purchased here.

Tara MacLean compared to Tori in review of Bounce Soundtrack

(December 5, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

I found a review of the "Bounce" Soundtrack from The Reveille at Louisiana State University and posted at news.excite.com. It was written by Christina Stephens and in one place she compares Tara Maclean, who is on the soundtrack, to Tori Amos. Here is that part of the review:

Canadian Tara MacLean contributes the song "Divided" from her stunning February release "Passenger." "Divided" is a great tune, which has an underlying beat that doesn't distract from her powerful voice. She moves from lower notes to higher ones with ease and has a moan that is reminiscent of Tori Amos.

Tori Tribute Concert in Baton Rouge, LA

(December 5, 2000) - BeeJayL10 reports:

I go to LSU in Baton Rouge, LA and I noticed several flyers lately with pictures of Tori and the words "Tori is Coming" and just today (November 10, 2000), I was walking in "Free Speech Alley" (where organizations have tables set up) in front of the Union and there was a table set up with the Tori pics and a stereo playing Under the Pink!! I asked the guy what was going on and he said there's a write up in LSU's newspaper the Reveille. It takes up almost an entire page and has a nice picture of her from the Venus booklet and has the headline "A tribute to Tori Amos: Imitation is the sincerest of flattery"

So anyway, the facts: It's at the Spanish Moon in Baton Rouge (Friday. November 10, 2000). Several bands will be doing covers of Tori's music

    The bands are:

    The Souls of Blues Revival
    Secret Annexe
Angie Manning (who is going to perform by herself with a piano)
    Daniel Lee Hotard
    and Estereo

I just thought I'd let you know. It sounds awesome and they've been advertising it on the radio a lot and all over campus. Sounds like fun!!!

Hollywood Showdown

(December 5, 2000) - Andy reports:

There is a game show on the Gameshow Network called "Hollywood Showdown" They give you three choices, and then the question. Well today i was watching (I was bored) and the sequence went as follows:

    the three choices were:
    Tori Amos
    Toni Braxton
    Janet Jackson

And the question was "In '98 which artist filed bankruptcy?" and of course the answer was Toni Braxton.

Review of "Time and Love: The Essential Masters" by Laura Nyro

(December 5, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

The Orange County Register printed a review of the new Laura Nyro album called "Time and Love: The Essential Masters" in their December 1, 2000 edition. It mentions Tori. You can read the entire interview at ocregister.com. Here is the Tori part:

Clearly there were more reasons than the feminist movement to explain why Nyro's '60s albums were once considered standard-issue in women's dormitories, particularly since her songs weren't particularly caustic or even topical. I'd guess that, apart from being easy to identify with (her songs' chief greatness), it was their production that drew so many in.

Her records are grandiose works, yes, each of them blending years of gospel release, jazzy chord structures and Brill Building piano pop into a unique approach. Yet for as enormous and bombastic as they could have been, none was anything but intimately warm.

It's a warmth that was heard again, notably (and perhaps to greater effect) on King's "Tapestry" and Mitchell's "Court and Spark." But by the late '70s, when Patti Smith and Debby Boone stretched opposite ends of the femme-pop spectrum until it snapped in half, that warmth had all but disappeared. Sadly, it has never returned.

Which makes "Time and Love," recently issued by Sony Legacy, such a find to younger listeners, particularly those who think the trials and tribulations of Tori Amos, Paula Cole and Fiona Apple are something new. Granted, those artists tackle their subject matter with considerably more bite than Nyro mustered. But at a time when mainstream music has boiled down female roles to just two - shallow hussy or wounded and betrayed intellectual - a journey through Nyro's finest makes for a much-needed refresher course.

Savage Love

(December 5, 2000) - Lindsay W. (Sun) and Evan M (aka 'pagoda') report:

I figured you may want to know that Tori is mentioned in this weeks Savage Love. (at The Onion web site.)

Savage Love is actually a a sex & relationship syndicated column that runs in North Amercican alternative weekly papers.

"This morning, I'm woken at 6 a.m. by Mark blasting Tori Amos."

"Try and separate your roommate's sexuality from his Chinese-food cartons, Tori Amos, and that brown puddle. "

"There are also gay guys who don't blast Tori Amos at 6 a.m. (or ever). "

Those are the specific quotes above.

Revolution Magazine

(December 5, 2000) - treva reports:

on page 38 of the December 2000 issue of Revolution magazine, there is a small table captioned, "Thanks to a little studio magic, some cheesy pop artists enjoyed a dancefloor resurrection." among the likes of kenny g, the spice girls, and debbie gibson, is our pal tori. her entry reads:

    Tori Amos -- "Professional Widow"
    (Armand Van Helden Mix)
    (Atlantic), 1997

i never thought i would see tori amos and kenny g mentioned together.

Trent Reznor mentions Tori during online chat

(November 28, 2000) - Julien Loiseau and Lisa Mason (anitalula) report:

Trent Reznor, the leader of NIN, was on a Yahoo Chat organized by Spin.com on Tuesday, November 21, 2000. It was short but cool and someone asked him about Tori. Here is a transcription of that portion of the chat. You can read the entire transcript at The NIN Hotline web site.

kentino : I loved your vocals on Past the Mission. is there any chance you might collaborate with Tori Amos again?

TRENT REZNOR : I like her music. I don't know -- it would seem unlikely. But that's more from her side than mine. You can read into that what you will.

The play "Wit" by Margaret Edson

(November 28, 2000) - kavita reports:

last wednesday (nov. 15, 2000) i went to see the play "wit" by Margaret Edson at the Performance Network Theatre in Ann Arbor. MI. I should mention it was an exceptionally well-written and performed play, and i reccommend everyone to go see it when it comes near you. but, there was a tiny bit of tori involvement: at the beginning of one scene they played the beginning of "twinkle." then later at the start of another scene, they played the beginning of "bells for her." they always stopped the music before the vocals started but it was really a beautiful play and the music fit perfectly.

Lifetime article about Wicca

(November 6, 2000) - Grianne Seanachai and Winter Troll report:

There's this article on the website for Lifetime about Wicca, and in it they mention Tori twice, once at the beginning, and then at this little quiz at the end. It purports that she's Wiccan, although she's never said she was, and personally I think Tori's spiritual beliefs are more an amalgamation (if that's a word ) of a lot of different things.

World Figure Skating Championships on ESPN

(November 6, 2000) - Sandrasings and Gawen (AKA Will) report:

I was just flipping through channels, and I stopped on the World Figure Skating Championships from Nice, France on ESPN and this ice skating couple (Jamie Silverstein and Justin Pekarek) was skating to Tori Amos songs! I caught it during "iieee" which then went into "Siren." (Some reports mention hearing "Finn" as well!) It is on ESPN right now (9.14pm CST, November 6, 2000). They are only 16 and 18 years old, too! [Note from Mikewhy: This has been reported several other times earlier in the year. I do not know if this was a rerun of something, or something new where they were once again skating to Tori.]

Toronto popular music studies conference

(November 6, 2000) - Sarah D'Ambruoso reports:

I was looking through the program of a popular music studies conference that started yesterday in Toronto, and was astonished to find that a paper is being presented on Tori! Here is the link.. Kevin Clifton of Colby College will present "Voice Leading and the Theme of Loss in the Music of Tori Amos"

Righteous Babes documentary and Tori mentioned in article about Outtakes Dallas 2000

(November 6, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

I found an article in the November 2, 2000 edition of the Dallas Observer about Outtakes Dallas 2000, the annual Lesbian and Gay film festival, which is taking place during the first 2 weekend of November 2000. They review some of the highlights of the festival, including the documentary film called Righteous Babes. The review includes a significant mention of Tori, who is in the film. You can read more about Righteous Babes elsewhere on the Dent.

The topics of commercialized feminism and pop music are seriously underserved by director Pratihba Parmar's 50-minute documentary about the rise of female musicians in the '90s. Pratihba throws the word "feminism" around without ever acknowledging the near-endless variety of permutations it can take. There's much distance between, say, Gloria Steinem and Camille Paglia, Courtney Love and Madonna, all of whom are interviewed or profiled in this piece without a clear sense of where they stand on the spectrum. Indeed, certain commentators are assigned to discuss particular women-artists without acknowledgment that they've dissed others in the same documentary--Steinem has criticized Madonna in the past but is not asked to assess this documentary's near-unanimous assessment that she is a genius (nor is Andrea Dworkin, a veteran anti-porn crusader who drops in to comment on women's bodies' being peddled like roast beef but is not consulted on what she thinks of the Madonna video prominently featured in this production, "Open Your Heart," where the singer cavorts in a peepshow). If The Material Girl does possess divine inspiration, it's applied to the job of commodifying herself in an ever-changing market--yet the Spice Girls are only half-facetiously referred to as "the apocalypse," and for what? Commodifying feminism. Apparently, their sin is that they aren't even half as good at a sales pitch as Madonna is. Interviews with Ani DiFranco, Chrissie Hynde, Tori Amos, Sinead O'Connor, and Garbage's Shirley Manson are seemingly edited to root out thoughtfulness--the producers cut away before these women get a chance to say anything meaningful. The peculiar exception is Tori Amos, an artist known for full-moon-crazy, rambling interviews. Snippets of her haunting, harrowing song about being raped, "Me and a Gun," are delivered a cappella. With uncharacteristic directness, Amos seems to be dismissing the filmmakers when she says she's suspicious of women who "bitch about hanging on to feminism." That, she claims, is "stale pussy, man." Don't spend all your time talking about it, she says: "Be it." Sing it, sister. (Nov. 11, 3:30 p.m.)

Singer Nelly Furtado

(November 6, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

I found an article about singer Nelly Furtado at OCWeekly.com (Orange County Weekly). It appeared in the Vol. 6 No. 09 November 3 - 9, 2000 issue. Here is the part that mentions Tori:

Sounds like: Everybody Whenever the Mighty Music Machine churns out someone new, there are always the inevitable comparisons to people who've come before. But the Dreamworks Records press release touting singer Nelly Furtado's debut album, Whoa, Nelly!, struck LowBallAssChatter as being just a tad overwrought with the name-droppings. Observe: "[Furtado sounds like] Macy Gray, Gwen Stefani and TLC's T-Boz rolled into one" (Spin Magazine); "Sounds like: Macy Gray, Gwen Stefani and Fiona Apple‹all rolled into one" (Seventeen); "Like what you've come to expect from people like Macy Gray or Fiona Apple. If somehow you could combine those two, you'd come up with Nelly Furtado" (Wakeboarding Magazine); "Has a taste for TLC and Janet Jackson" (Philadelphia Inquirer); "Vocals and lyrics that evoke Tori Amos' personal mysticism, Gwen Stefani's shiny earnestness and the freely associative wordplay of the Beat poets" (Elle); "The thinking woman's Christina Aguilera" (Entertainment Weekly); and "Offbeat harmonies that sound like Björk meets Macy Gray" (Interview). Whew!

SingNet Entertainment Channel

(November 6, 2000) - Richard Handal reports:

Richard found this odd entry at the SingNet Entertainment Channel online. It simply states the first name Tori without saying which Tori they mean. So it might not be Tori Amos, but you never know. A VERY odd sighting! The site says:

    Tori Avoids Odd Numbered Peas!
Tori, who is superstitious, always enters a
plane with her right foot first. She also
honks twice and lifts her feet before driving
into a tunnel, and never leaves an odd number of peas on her plate.(Globe)

Sclub7

(November 6, 2000) - Colin reports:

I'm a grade 12 student in Halifax NS (Canada) and I recently picked up one of those free "teen magazines" in the office of my school. It had an article about the Sclub7. In it they had a little section called "club hoppin'" where they profiled the members of the pop group by asking them different questions. Imagine my suprise when Jon, the blond guy in the group, listed Tori was his favorite musical artist.

Quiz in the Australian newspaper The Herald Sun

(November 6, 2000) - Ellie Catz reports:

I got a call from my friend (Sarah Mazz) last night to tell me that Tori had been mentioned in a quiz in a Melbourne (Australia) newspaper - The Herald Sun on Thursday Novermber 2, 2000.

The quiz was on the back page of the entertainment guide and the first questions was: "Who appeared on the inner sleeve of her 1996 album breastfeeding a pig?".

Ani DiFranco article

(November 6, 2000) - Ciccone4 reports:

This one goes back to an article by Lois Maffeo from CMJ Music News in March 1997's "How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love Ani DiFranco". In the article Maffeo makes a reference to Tori's piglet-friendlyness in the "Pele" booklet.

"In a recent ungracious post-show moment, I found myself having to dig myself out of some deep doodoo when I was set upon by some angry Tori Amos fans who objected to a joke I made about the commercial jackpot she hit by breast-feeding a pig. An irrational temper tantrum I was having at my coffee-shop job turned out to be caused by the 10,000 Maniacs tape that was on. Someone tells me how great Alanis is and I reach for my revolver."

The article is also available online at AniDiFranco.org.

Matthew Perry in US Weekly

(November 1, 2000) - Willis Brown reports:

I just got the new us weekly with matthew perry on the cover. [ Issue #299 November 6, 2000.] In the article about him here is the following section: "he's also a closet sap who stocks his CD player with discs by Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos and anyone else who has played at lilith fair." it goes on to say that he will listen to them until he is "blue in the face" Obviously the reporter did not do their research because they implied that tori performed at lilith, which we all know is incorrect.

Singer/songwriter Sheila Nicholls

(November 1, 2000) - mel (pocketsfilledwithstones) reports:

I've just been getting into a singer/songwriter called sheila nicholls, and found these reviews of her album. The first was at hiponline.com:

Another female singer is here with a whole lot of gall, a big piano, and an even bigger voice. Sheila Nicholls owes a lot to her contemporary, Tori Amos. Right off I found her appealing, and not as appalled as she tried to make me. She tries hard to be daring by throwing 'fuck' in, but it doesn't make it quite so fierce. Amos' power isn't in her use of profanity, but in the way she brings her songs to life. You can visualize almost any song.

"Hannah" was an attempt at Amos' style but fails to take such insinuations to that level: "As she swallowed cream/ she could already feel him inside." A double meaning isn't enough to get a song off.

Great vocals don't equal a great record. I kept waiting for Nicholls to take it up a notch, but that time never came. As much as I loved her voice, I couldn't fall in love with her songs.

There was another review at seattlewritergrrls.org:

It was a good bet. Even though Nicholls had the added benefit of some supporting musicians, it could have just been her and her keyboard for all I cared. She closed her eyes, set her fingers to the keys, and with an almost pleading, boyish, and accented voice proceeded to disarm the audience. Well, at least she charmed me! Her surging piano has Tori Amos' emotive force, especially on "Eiderdown," but her lyrics are more centered and are less stream-of-consciousness than those of Amos. I also heard elements of XTC in the rocking, lilting, and somewhat quirky "Medusa," but the lyrics definitely came from a woman's perspective. Bottom line is that Nicholls is one of a kind and an expert songwriter.

Satanic Muscicians

(November 1, 2000) - Ben M. reports:

I found this table of "Satanic Muscicians" on the web looking under demon possession. Tori is in the third column, seventh up from the bottom. This site is from a fudamentalist Christian site, (Obviously).

The movie "Dog Park"

(November 1, 2000) - Tracy Rachel Streimish reports:

I was watching the movie "Dog Park" with Janeane Garofalo and Tori was in one of the scenes. They showed the inside of the (fictional?) offices at "Shift Magazine". Do you know how some businesses have certain covers from their magazines blown up and put up around the offices? Well, in this movie, they did that twice with Tori on the cover. There was a big shot of it along the front wall with other blown up cover shots. And then it was shown in another scene, only smaller, on the wall next to the stairs. It looked like a picture that was taken around the "Boys For Pele" era. Cuz of how her hair looked and everything. I actually have the same exact picture framed in my bedroom. :)

Co. Dance Competition on ESPN or ESPN2

(Updated November 1, 2000) - Karac and Kristopher sent in the first two reports below. Then, I received the third report below from DragonGrl that further clarified this sighting.

Today [October 8, 2000] I saw on ESPN2 a School of Dance (don't know the school - sorry) dancing to "Cloud on My Tongue" at the Co.Dance Competition. I'm not for sure of the final results, but it was exciting to see a group dance to this song.

I was flipping through channels and stopped on ESPN where they were having something called a "Co. Dance" competition. Next thing I knew, as part of the "Junior Small Division", someone named Sarah Latter (sp?) came up to dance and started dancing to Tori's "Cooling"! I was surprised! And the commentors were talking about "kudos to the teachers" because the girls were understanding the music so well and picking good music. Anyways, I thought it was pretty cool to see someone dancing to a b-side.

Regarding the Co. Dance Competition sighting on ESPN2, I was watching that as well, and caught the Tori songs.

It's not a mistake that two people heard two different songs. There were actually two different performances by two different dance companies, both using Tori songs. I saw the performance to "Cloud On My Tongue" and "Winter". I didn't see a performance to "Cooling". So it looks like there were three Tori songs involved! Also, I believe that one of the companies dancing to Tori, the "Cloud on my Tongue" performance, actually placed second or first place. Both performances were gorgeous, as well as the costuming.

I don't know whether the ESPN2 or ESPN website would have more info., but it couldn't hurt to check. Also, I believe that Co. is a brand name of a company that makes dance apparall.

singingforaliving.com

(October 29, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

There is an interesting web site called singingforaliving.com which among many things includes some Tori content. This web site is a free resource site for developing recording artists, singers and singer/songwriters. The site includes articles, calendars, voice lessons & training products, legal advice...what's up in the news... and other items of interest to such developing artists. The site has been put together by Marta Woodhull, and old friend of Tori's, and the girlfriend/mate of Phil Shenale, Tori's String arranger....(John Philip Shenale). You can find out more about this site here.

TLC's A Wedding Story

(October 29, 2000) - Dana Petty reports:

tori was more or less "featured" on the U.S. TV show "a wedding story" yesterday [Tuesday, October 24, 2000] on TLC. (The Learning Channel.) in short, a couple met on a tori amos chat site. they built a strong friendship through email and phone conversations (and through talking about tori!) and finally met. they got married and the bride's dress kind of reminded me of tori's wedding dress! it was a really sweet story. just thought you might be interested ;) (You can find out more about this regular show on the tlc.discovery.com web site.)

Celebrity Quote Of The Day

(October 29, 2000) - Erin D. reports:

Just wanted to let you know that the Celebrity Quote of Day in the Florida State newspaper, the FSView, on Thursday October 28, 2000 was, "I wanted to be a ballerina, but my thighs are like rhinoceroses'..." -Tori Amos.

It cheered me up in a boring class!

Radiohead album review

(October 29, 2000) - Courtney Allen reports:

I was reading a review of Radiohead's new Album (the wonderful) Kid A. at salon.com. And I stumbled across a Tori, she was mentioned unfavourably by the reviewer claiming that her and Madonna simply used new beats to update their sound thus selling more records. The link is below the quote from the reviewer.

"The record is a panicked, gritty, gurgling melange of droning rock, electronic effects and jazz freakouts, full of strange, aching beauty. Unlike musicians such as Tori Amos and Madonna, who have simply injected electronic beats into their work to bring it up to date, Radiohead have created something that transcends fashionable pastiche."

Much Music interview with Chantal Kreviazuk

(October 29, 2000) - Courtney Allen reports:

There is another place that had a Tori mention but it is quite old. It was done during an interview with Canadian singer/pianist Chantal Kreviazuk from a Much Music interview. This a piece of the interview where she mentions Tori.

Byron: YOU ARE GOING TO BE ASKED TO BE SLOTTED SOMEWHERE --

    Chantal: RIGHT CATEGORIZED, PIGEONHOLED.

    Byron: MARGINALIZED?

Chantal: RIGHT, RIGHT, RIGHT. I CAN'T HELP IT -- I AM A GIRL AND I DO PLAY THE PIANO... BUT, JUST BECAUSE TORI AMOS DOES THAT, DOESN'T MEAN, THAT SHE'S THE ONLY PERSON ON THE PLANET WHO CAN DO THAT. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF PIANOS AND THOUSANDS OF WOMEN.

You can read the entire interview here.

Italian show called 'roxybar'

(October 29, 2000) - heles reports:

I have a little tori sighting to report : back in 1994 (01.29.94, to be precise) tori took part of an italian show called 'roxybar', a music program which was broadcasted by VideoMusic (=now tmc2), a national music based channel.

    1. roxybar is starting and celebrating its seventh edition, and the ad for the new series of weekly shows featured a brief snip from the tori episode! she's (supposedly) finished with either a song or the interview bit and she's waving to the public, saying 'ciao'. extremely cute. :)

    2. roxybar website is back and has a full gallery for the artists featured in the past editions! this includes a couple of really lovely tori photos. the site is in italian so I'll give you the direct urls to the pics:

    http://www.roxyweb.com/immagini/tori1.jpg

    http://www.roxyweb.com/immagini/tori2.jpg

    The roxybar website is roxyweb.com.

Novel "Shadows Bend" dedicated to Tori

(October 20, 2000) - Howard reports:

Hey, have you seen that new fantasy novel called "Shadows Bend" by David Barbour and Richard Raleigh? It's dedicated to Tori, and the acknowledgements say the authors are donating some of the royalties to RAINN. I just got it, and I've only skimmed it real quick, but it looks like there's a character in it (Glory) who's based on Tori. Red hair, lost child, very sensuous, etc. I'm not quite sure what the deal is, but it's a pretty good read, especially if you're into HP Lovecraft and Robert E Howard. You can see an entry for the book at Amazon.com.

Barry Ingle review at advocate.com

(October 20, 2000) - Josh (kayne) reports:

Tori is mentioned in a music review of Barry Ingle at advocate.com:

BARRY INGLE/MONASTERY Pegging Barry Ingle as the gay male Tori Amos is entirely too easy. For one thing, Ingle openly cites her as an influence, and for another, on Monastery he largely sticks to solo piano, Amos's most trademark sound. The clincher is Ingle's Wizard of Oz redux, "Tornadoes"‹you'll swear it's a Tori cover when he sings lines like "You must be the good witch 'cause you say you're pretty / I'm feeling like the bad one 'cause they say I'm ugly." Where they differ most is subject matter: While Amos can sometimes float off into the ether lyrically, Ingle stays firmly grounded in real-life situations. Singing in a voice that sounds like a cross between Elton John and Al Stewart, Ingle's chosen leitmotif is people trapped in all manner of unfortunate circumstances. Some escape ("Little Temple"), some don't ("Miss Anna"), some are still trying (the autobiographical-sounding "Tractor Beams"). Most memorable of these songs is "Methadone," a chronicle of a drug clinic worker's decline into an addiction of her own. Also notable is the title track, in which the narrator longs for the naturally unattainable "Friar Jacob." These detailed character sketches are Ingle's greatest strength‹there's a warmth and a brightness to his music, but it's the figures in the shadows that linger longest in your mind.

USA Today article on L.A. eateries mentions Tori

(October 20, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

An article by Sue Facter posted to the USA Today web site on October 13, 2000 about the eateries in L.A. that the stars prefer mentions Tori. Here is the part that mentions Tori:

Madonna and Alicia Silverstone request that Walter Manzke, Patina's executive chef, whip up special veggie meals when they feast at Joachim and Christine Splichal's newly refurbished spot. Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt dine there, as do Jodie Foster, Hilary Swank, Denzel Washington, Farrah Fawcett, Tori Amos, Daisy Fuentes, Mariah Carey and Luis Miguel, Sherry Lansing, Bryant Gumbel, the Sidney Poitiers and Val Kilmer. Patina just catered Pete Sampras' at-home wedding. Cuisine: French with a touch of California.

peppermcgowan.com

(October 20, 2000) - treva reports:

i was reading a review of pepper mcgowan's music on her official website [www.peppermcgowan.com] and naturally came a cross a tori mention in the Plague Webzine review by Victor Mejia.

"Comparisons are likely to be drawn with Tori Amos, but Pepper is very much her own artist and her music is totally separate from miss Amos and any such comparisons are totally unfair. Pepper's music is timeless, in the sense that her songs seems to draw quite liberally from different periods in music history, but she twists things just enough to allow her songs to transcend the genres into something which is purely her own. Lyrics are a strength in Pepper's music and are delivered with care and beauty."

the entire review [among others] can be read here.

personal commentary, i agree whole-heartedly with the reviewer. pepper deserves to be praised on account of her own talent and style.

tori is also mentioned in the Attitude Webzine review by Wolfbite: "The bare quality to the sound of her songs is reminiscent of artists like Tori Amos, as are the extremely personal, heartfelt lyrics." and in the Cleveland Freetimes review: "This singer/songwriter has been compared to Tori Amos, and she's got the same confessional approach, as well as that open-ended exploratory piano/vocal style. Her material tends to be less mystical and airy-fairy, and more about the shit real people put each other through." which makes me think of when tori said [i don't remember where or when], "if you call me an airy-fairy neo-hippie waif, i will cut your penis off." so apparently someone in cleveland missed the mark with tori's music. oh well.

tori is also mentioned several times in the FAQ -- if you want pepper's take on the comparisons. i'm guessing she's tired of them. rightly so.

Kevyn Aucoin on beauty.com

(October 20, 2000) - Robyn (HangTenHoney) reports:

I just wanted to let you know that "Winter" was listed as one of Kevyn's top 50 favorite songs ever at beauty.com. He said he just wrote it all down from the top of his head, and "Winter" was the first one listed. :)

Country singer Sara Evans

(October 20, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

I found an article about country singer Sara Evans from the Associated Press at Yahoo! News. Tori is mentioned when the article mentions that Matt Chamberlain drums on the album. The part of the article that mentions Matt and Tori is below. You can read the entire article at Yahoo! News, at least for a while.

"Three Chords and the Truth," her first album, was traditional. Her second album, "No Place That Far," was a little more representative of her bluegrass-country upbringing - with a hint of pop. Now there's a definite pop undercurrent running through all 11 tracks (six of them co-written by Evans) of her new album.

"Born to Fly" marks the Nashville debut of drummer Matt Chamberlain, who has worked with the Wallflowers, Macy Gray, Fiona Apple and Tori Amos. His 9-second riff opens the title cut and sets the tone for the rest of the CD, particularly "Let's Dance."

"The music is definitely more edgy and progressive than my previous recordings," she said, "but my voice is so country, there's just no way I could ever not sound country. I have a rock drummer, but it's still a country record."

Swedish Big Brother

(October 20, 2000) - Jennie Alibasic reports:

Just thought i'd report that tori's "iieee" was played during the closing credits for last nights (thursday, october 19, 2000) edition of the swedish big brother tv-show on channel 5. Very cool.

Allison Moorer Review

(October 20, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

I found a review of singer Allison Moorer at the web site for the Orange Country Register that was posted on October 6, 2000. Here is the part that mentions Tori:

"The Hardest Part" [Moorer's album] is, in some ways, a tribute to Moorer's parents, disguised in biting tales of heartbreak and near-reconciliation. Like Tori Amos' "Little Earthquakes," it is born out of the past but not necessarily about the past - not, that is, until it reaches its final cut. In Tori's case, that was "Me and a Gun," a harrowing but imagistic recollection of her rape; in Allison's case, it's the hidden track, "Cold, Cold Ground," a harrowing but imagistic recollection of her parents' murder-suicide.

With each song, the purpose is twofold: catharsis and correction.
