Blue Skies revisited [BT Concert]

(October 20, 2000) - Tim Thacher reports:

I got back from a BT concert last night (October 13, 2000 I think) and much to my surprise he performed Blue Skies. And it wasn't prerecorded... He had a singer (which doubled as a guitarist (bassist?)) doing Tori's part and I must admit - she did a pretty good job. She was no Tori, but not too shabby.

Anyway - just thought I'd share that in kind of an unrelated tori not-sighting sort of way.

25 Sexiest on VH1

(October 20, 2000) - susan (delyrium) and Toriphile4Pele report:

I was watching the 25 sexiest people or something like that on vh1 today [Early October 2000] and at around 1:35, the went to a commercial, and they were listing "Oddly Pleasurable" people.... They played a clip of Tori's "God" video when she was playing with the rats.

This was related to a poll VH1 had on their web site as well. I never did find out how Tori did on that exactly...

Poetry London

(October 5, 2000) - Joanna Quinn reports:

I thought you might be interested to know that a poem about Tori Amos has appeared in a British poetry magazine called Poetry London (issue no. 37). It is by Ruth Padel, a well-known and respected poet who won the 1997 National Poetry Competition and has just had a book published entitled I'm A Man, which is a study of rock music, Greek myth and modern maleness. The poem itself is typed out below:

    Shapes
    by Ruth Padel

This is the sanding room for Bosendorfer Grands
where Tori Amos and her manager are looking for
the instrument on which she'll say she can,
at last, improvise a song about the night in LA

she was raped. (Some loser with a gun.) The only way
she'll be able to get real again ‚ get past
her favourite red silk number from Monsoon
ripped apart on the arse of a Plymouth.

"What's music for, in anyone?" the manager will say
to the media, when asked. "To give a shape
to pain." What does she meet? Piped melodies rained
above the noise, like any factory. Boys

yomping a floating carpet: saffron curls
of raw mahogany. Grands need a lot of space
and everywhere Tori looks are twenty-five-
foot surfaces with shots of naked girls,

legs wide. Why the dodgy ambiance, such a high-
    class place? "These photographs provide
inspiration to our workers in their delicate task,
creating the body of the piano," says the guide.

Global Streams Magazine

(October 5, 2000) - Nadyne Mielke reports:

Tori is on the cover of, and has a small mention in, the magazine Global Streams. Global Streams is a magazine sent out to subscribers of the ISP Telocity.

The article is "Web-Savvy Musicians: A Round-Up" by Joel Lapp. I'm not going to type up the whole article, but here's the paragraph about Tori:

"Like Smashing Pumpkins, songstress Tori Amos (featured on our cover this month) has a ferociously dedicated audience that has made itself known online. Amos encourages the devotion by interacting with fans at her site (www.toriamos.com) in online chats and charity events. Her site -- curently in a lull between album releases -- is an extension of her music and ideas, with multimedia clips and a place for fans to interact with each other in exchanging stories. The most interesting aspect of the site in its current quiescent period: a selection of 18 of her videos."

Larry Sanders show

(October 5, 2000) - Jon Drake reports:

TORI was mentioned on the Larry Sanders show, prob an old rerun but none the less Janine Garrafalo was talking to her assistant and sayed that bio belongs to TORI AMOS not tori spelling, she's a musician not an actress.

Shawn Colvin concert

(October 3, 2000) - Krista R. Cady reports:

Tonight (30 September 2000), Shawn Colvin performed at Albion College in Albion, MI. Before the show and after the opening act they were playing some great music including Tori. I heard "Cruel" and "Purple People" while I was there. It was very groovy.

Reviews Of Madonna's album "Music"

(October 3, 2000) - Edmir2 and Mikewhy report:

At the Wall of Sound website there is a review of Madonna's new album Music (which is fabulous). In the review they describe a song as Tori Amos-y. The sentence goes "the Tori Amos-y track 'Gone'."

I also found another review of Madonna's new album Music at the Excite news web site. This one comes from The Bona Venture at St. Bonaventure U. and was written by Sara Graham. The review mentions Tori:

"I Deserve it," the album's fourth track in which Madonna assumes the persona of an unrequited lover, sounds similar to a Tori Amos song. Its slow sound and simple background music, containing an acoustic guitar and drum part with some subtle electronic effects, add to its melancholic mood.

November 2000 Spin Magazine

(October 3, 2000) - justin saegusa reports:

There's a very brief tori mention in the november 2000 issue of spin with [the incredibly talented] radiohead on the cover. its in "ask the experts: making real rock stars out of the 'real world' wannabes," in which they have people who are "in the business" critique the music of people from mtv's 'the real world'. its in the section about rebecca from the seattle show

    stage prescence?
flohr: there's something rough around the edges here that i think is compelling
cowan: she's a little plain. her music is tori amos-y, but she doesn't look at all disturbed.

The Encyclopedia Madonnica

(September 30, 2000) - Ciccone4 (George Blair IV) reports:

I've had "The Encyclopedia Madonnica", written by Matthew Rettenmund, for years and I do not know why I have never looked to see if there was a Tori Amos bit, but, alas, by mistake I found this here tidbit:

Amos, Tori: London-based American folk singer who told "Details" magazine in 1994: "She's the shadow of the Christian Madonna. So while the Christian Madonna was pure and sanctified, Madonna has become the sexuality of it incarnated. But I don't think Madonna's been very nurtured as a human being. I said a few years ago that I'd make her a plate of spaghetti and I mean that."

The book was published in 1994. You can find it at Amazon.com.

Orange County Register article on Creed

(September 22, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

I found an article that was published by the Orange County Register on September 22, 2000. The article is about the band Creed and it mentions Tori in an interesting way. You can read the entire article at ocregister.com. Here is the portion with the Tori reference:

What, exactly, does a band have to do to get widespread recognition these days? If you're the guys in Creed, you basically need an act of God to make it happen (no pun intended).

What does it take? A multiplatinum debut album? They've got that - "My Own Prison" sold more than 4 million copies.

A string of sold-out concerts? Check.

A sophomore release that doesn't fall into obscurity or get panned by fans? "Human Clay" has rung up sales of 6 million units as of this month.

A spiritual message that seeks to inspire hope and strength? Well, OK, that could be construed as a downside, but when you think about it, Tori Amos has been doing just that for years, and she has graced the covers of nearly every pop music magazine at one point or another.

So what does Creed have to do to get the buzz it seems to have earned over the past few years?

"The Faces of Rock" in Rolling Stone

(September 22, 2000) - Brandon Sink reports:

There is a small Tori mention on page 44 of the newest Rolling Stone magazine. It's Issue #851 from October 12, 2000, with Kate Hudson on the cover. Anyway, on page 44, there is a small article called "The Faces of Rock" and it takes a look at some of the best illustrations of rock stars from Rolling Stone's 30-year history. They show the small illustration (I think from 1994) where Tori's face is illustrated as a mask floating in the air with storm clouds in the background. The illustration is by Matt Mahurin. (You can see this illustration on the Dent here.)

The Uninvited

(September 22, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

I found an article about a band named The Uninvited at the latimes.com web site that was posted there on September 22, 2000. The article mentions that the band used to be with Atlantic Records and mentions Tori. You can read the entire article at the latimes.com web site. Here is the portion that mentioned Tori:

In 1998 the band signed a record deal, so why aren't you guys rich?

Good question. The bottom line was that there was no one at Atlantic who was our champion. There was nobody there whose career depended upon our success, and that's basically it. They have so many bands on the Atlantic roster . . .. So they're looking at the new Uninvited record and the new Sugar Ray album--which one do you think is going to pay the bills? Other bands just kept getting priority--Sugar Ray, Collective Soul and Tori Amos.

And Tori Amos is much cuter than you guys are.

Well, yeah, so which record would you work? Once we split from Atlantic, we went into the studio and made a new album, "It's All Good," and capitalized on the fan base we established when we were with Atlantic. We tried to just keep it up, and at that point Bill [Cory] decided he didn't want this any more. It was perfectly understandable, because it's a hard life doing this. It's hard being on the road all the time.

Another Alloy Pop Quiz

(September 22, 2000) - Lipglossqueen reports:

Tori is mentioned in another Alloy quiz "Which Popular Character Are You?" in the following question. You can take this quiz at Alloy.com:

    5. Family road trip time! Everyone's allowed to bring one CD. What do you pick?

    a. LL Cool J, Mama Said Knock You Out. You gotta love that hip-hop flava. Not to mention his excellent flare for fashion.

    b. Mariah Carey, Butterfly. That girl knows how to move her thang.

    c. Fiona Apple, Tidal. She's deep, she's tortured, and she's dating your favorite director!

    d. Dave Matthews Band, Crash. You just like their music. 'Nuff said.

    e. TORI AMOS, FROM THE CHOIRGIRL HOTEL. She's too inspiring for words.

    f. Whitney Houston, My Love is Your Love. The ultimate diva, you worship at her Gucci-heeled feet.

Tori Drag Impersonator In Seattle

(September 20, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

I found an item on the RDT Fanzine web site about a Tori drag impersonator in Seattle named Craig. You can read more about him/her and see photos at the RDT fanzine web site!

USA Today Madonna Quiz

(September 20, 2000) - Sue Baldwin reports:

I was doing this Madonna quiz at the USA Today web site, Lord knows why, and Tori was an option on question #3. The question is, "Who would be Madonna's sister-in-law by marriage is she had stayed married to Sean Penn?" The options were Tori Amos, Aimee Mann, Robin Wright, or Jewel. (I do not know the answer, but it is not Tori!) This quiz was posted on the USA Today web site on September 18, 2000.

Bonfire Madigan's new CD, Saddle the Bridge

(September 16, 2000) - Marla Tiara reports:

A review of Bonfire Madigan's new CD, Saddle the Bridge from the pop MATTERS web site:

The last paragraph of the review ends with:

Infusing a perfect meld of poetry and deliberate rawness, blending some of the finest musicianship to ever come out of Kill Rock Stars and the gorgeous and haunting lyrics of a master, Saddle the Bridge is poised to raise the bar for everyone from Charming Hostess to Tori Amos. The only question that remains is who will raise it for Bonfire Madigan.

[Bonfire Madigan is a band that centers around Madigan Shive, a punkrockgrrrl who plays cello and sings intense political and emotional songs. Not a farfetched comparison in some ways!]

Tony DiTerlizzi and "Black Swan"

(September 15, 2000) - Elaine Chase reports:

Tony DiTerlizzi is an accomplished fantasy artist who I have known for some time. His work is prominently featured in games such as Dungeons and Dragons and Magic:the Gathering, as well as in books, etc. I see him in person quite frequently, so I hadn't checked out his website until I was searching the web for some art for my new condo. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled across this:

    http://www.diterlizzi.com/gallery/blakswan.html

Note that he currently has no prints of Black Swan, and the original is not for sale. If he does get prints, I'll let you know (after I buy mine!), but I thought the Dent community would like to see it anyway.

Joni Mitchell's official site

(September 15, 2000) - josh kayne reports:

Tori is mentioned three times (that I've found) on Joni Mitchell's official site, www.jonimitchell.com

The mentions are for covering "A Case of You" and "River" (Actually I sent in the second and got an email back thanking me... it was added to the site recently) and also there is a link.

However the link goes to http://www.webville.com/~tori/ which is no longer in existence. It would be great if you could talk to them about changing their link to being the Dent :) [Mikewhy: I will do that!]

MAD TV

(September 15, 2000) - Jenni and Stephen report:

As I don't usually watch this show, I don't know if this was a re-run or not, but last night (Saturday night, September 9, 2000) MAD TV did a spoof promoting a show called "Pretty White Kids With Problems." When listing the artists who had contributed to the soundtrack, Tori was one of them (along with Jewel, Sarah, Fiona Apple, Lisa Loeb, Melissa Ethridge, etc.).

South Park Parody

(September 15, 2000) - austin c. reports:

My sister Meredith found this Tori parody on the South Park page Mr. Hat's HellHole. It was rather hilarious. It's about Cartman and Aliens. The lyrics are supposed to be sung to the melody of Spark. Check it out.

Tori's Yearbook Photos at ClassMates.com

(September 15, 2000) - John Gadbois reports:

Wizard ("The Comics Magazine")

(September 15, 2000) - Jenni reports:

In Issue No. 109 (October 2000) of Wizard ("The Comics Magazine") there is a brief Tori mention. The section is titled "Famous Fans: From Ben Affleck to Rob Zombie, 'Wizard' Pulls Back the Curtain To Reveal The Top 75 Celebrity Comic Fans." On page 98, there is the following text: TORI AMOS The singer and piano prodigy has forged a bond with _Sandman_ writer Neil Gaiman. Amos has included Gaiman's name in song lyrics and wrote the introduction to _Death: The High Cost of Living_ trade paperback. Gaiman has cast Amos as a talking tree in his novel Stardust.

Hollywood Squares

(September 6, 2000) - Soraya (hot kachina) reports:

I was getting my nails done otherwise I would never watch the stupid show [Hollywood Squares], but the question went somethin like this: At the age of 5, singer Tori Amos was the youngest member ever admitted to the prestigious Baltimore Peabody Conservatory of Music. She was kicked out at the age of 11...why?" Vitamin C, the girl that sings "Graduation" said, "Oh I actually know this one...its because she wore black." The answer was incorrect...the "true" answer according to the game show host was "Because she wanted to play pop music instead of classical."

Tori mentioned by Bjork in October Q magazine

(September 6, 2000) - Laurence Wilson reports:

Just thought I'd write to let you know that in the Q magazine, there is a regular section called "Cash for Questions" where rock stars answer questions posted by readers. You may remember that Alanis Morisette answered one about Tori in 1999.

Anyway, the wonderfully talented Icelandic star Bjork (she's big in Europe, not sure about the US) was asked this question from Alan Kerr in Bidford-upon-Avon in the October 2000 issue:

"Have you seen Polly Harvey and Tori Amos since your Q cover with them in '94"

    Bjork's answer was

"I talk to Polly more, probably because she lives in England. We don't see each other regularly, I wouldn't say we're friends exactly. But we all definitely give each other mutual support. We have similar jobs. Tori is mag-ical, euphoric and it's enjoyable to be around her. Polly has more of an earthy quality. She's so truthful and has so much integrity."

Peter Stuart

(September 1, 2000) - Tom from the Philippines reports:

Check out the official site of Peter Stuart (formerly of the Dog's eye view). He used to open up for Tori. She was metioned in the "peter's bio" section which will appear after u click on to "news". Here is what it says:

Peter built his following in a very grass roots fashion, opening as a solo performer for the Counting Crows on their 1994 tour. He won over legions of fans all across North America and Europe purely on the raw intimacy of his perfomances and the strength of his home made three-song cassette, of which he sold six thousand copies from the stage. From there, he went on to open for Tori Amos and Cracker before signing with Columbia Records in 1995.

Lavendise.com (a faery site)

(September 1, 2000) - Melanie Perales reports:

I remembered on Lavendise.com (a faery site), it lists Tori in the "Music" section and says, "Many people will agree that Tori Amos has the fae blood in her. Her music is truely inspiring and this album (Crucify EP) is very deep and magical." And if you go into the different faery houses in the "Houses" section and look up 'sylph' you'll find a nice illustration of Tori as well.

Happy Rhodes review

(September 1, 2000) - j'ason reports:

Tori is mentioned in a review of the 1998 Happy Rhodes album "Many Worlds Are Born Tonight" at the BIRDpages recod dealer directory. Here is the part that mentions Tori:

Rhodes may be ignored by the mainstream. However, she has won a growing cult of fans that include Tori Amos and ex-Swan Michael Gira. She is the kind of artist that one cannot find in magazines such as, say, Rolling Stone or Spin or even listen to on commercial radio stations. Nonetheless, in many independent radio programs and publications her musical presence is truly compelling.

Tom Jones's new biography

(September 1, 2000) - Kelly reports:

Tori is mentioned in Tom Jones's new biography called "Tom Jones: Close Up".

Note from Mikewhy: That song was called "I Wanna Get Back With You" which appeared on the 1995 Tom Jones album "The Lead And How To Swing It" on Atlantic Records. The song was also released as a single in the U.K. through Interscope. I have created a page about this duet in my Music archives where you can also read the passages from the bio that mention Tori.

Amanda Ghost

(August 30, 2000) - Amanda *Sparkly Girl* Keller-Hester reports:

In the September 14, 2000 issue of Rolling Stone, there is a small blurb on a new artist named Amanda Ghost. Tori's name is mentioned, see below:

    AMANDA GHOST
    Ghost Stories

    Britain's next big female rocker?

Although it's helped the careers and creativity of Bjork, Macy Gray, Tori Amos , and Madonna, England hasn't produced a major solo female rocer since Polly Jean Harvey. The U.K.'s best bid for renewed femme respect is a category-defying firebrand whose Ghost Stories evokes all those icons, yet asserts its own dark splendor. A Londoner of Indian and Spanish heritage, blessed with a husky vibrato from the house of Stevie Nicks, Amanda Ghost revels in classic singer-songwriter introspection, drama, melody and tough lyricism. On her debut album, former EMF guitarist Ian Dench and house remixer Lukas Burton twiddle today's techno toys. The result is a rock-dance-folk studio marvel with songs as intrepid as the sonics. Swinging from the club-rock stomp of "Filthy Mind" to the orchestral grandeur of "Numb", this beautiful outcast makes each track matter with a sweeping emotional range that suits the arrangements' ornate bombast. "Cellophane" wraps her sprawling angst into one concise, Stones-y argument: Ghost's talent is spooky.

Shirley Manson on gurl.com radio

(August 30, 2000) - Michele reports:

Shirley Manson of Garbage picked some of her favorite songs by girls for gurl.com radio. [You can listen to gURL radio using RealPlayer at the gurl.com web site. Shirley introduces the 2.5 hour show by saying that she is choosing music and paying homage to the women who have inspired her.] Me and a Gun is in the 4th segment, 14 minutes in. Two songs prior she played Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday, which Tori has covered, and the song after MaaG was by Dusty Springfield. After that, Shirley talks about the songs and says Me And A Gun is "a really strong song that's maybe the closest a white woman's ever really got to nailing the blues" She then plays PJ Harvey. Three songs right there to listen to, for people who may not have been exposed to some artists Tori talks about.

"Other People's Children" on BBC1

(August 28, 2000) - John (Dangermouse) reports:

Here in the U.K the BBC have a new drama series starting in September 2000 called Other People's Children. The trailer for it that they are showing at the moment has the end part of Cornflake Girl playing in the background. This is the 2nd time I`ve seen it in 2 days.

(August 29, 2000) - Danny.Weddup adds:

I was watching telly earlier this evening, BBC1, and Holiday had just finished. The BBC drama logo came up, and an advert for a new drama series came on. And they use cornflake girl as the music!

It's quite a long advert, and you hear the jangly intro and the first piano part, then the piano part that comes on after the 2nd chorus, when tori says, 'never was a cornflake girl....thought that was a good solution.' It's instrumental, you don't hear Tori's voice.

The series is called Other Peoples Children, adapted from a novel by Joanna Trollope I think they said. It's coming on sometime in september. For some reason I feel I'd better watch it, because they chose Tori for the advert. It seems to be about two parents who get divorced, and the effects on the children. It didn't look too happy, with scenes of arguing over the dinner table and the mother crying.

19-year-old singer Michal

(August 28, 2000) - Heather Goodson reports:

Heather found an article at Yahoo! News about a 19-year-old singer named Michal, who recently released her debut CD called "Sky With Stars." The article starts out saying:

Under normal circumstances, one might scoff at a 19-year-old singer-songwriter citing Marc Bolan, David Bowie, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Kurt Cobain as inspirations. In the case of up-and-comer Michal, however, those influences are genuine, and each is detectable on her debut CD, Sky With Stars. The daughter of artistic parents (her mother is a painter; her father, an art history professor), Michal studied classical music throughout childhood before turning to rock.

Later in the article, she is compared to Tori:

Accolades for Sky With Stars are filtering in, with many proclaiming Michal to be the next Fiona Apple or Tori Amos. "That's a really great honor, to be compared to those types of songwriters," she says. "I would much prefer that, as opposed to being compared to people who just perform."

"Paly High: Between Classes"

(August 28, 2000) - DragonGrl reports:

I was watching tv on Saturday evening (Aug 26th, 2000, 5:30 pm), KQED PBS channel 9 (in the SF Bay Area) and they were showing episodes of their "Bay Window" series. The episode I watched was "Paly High, Between Classes" which was apparently first run on April 19th of this year [2000]. The episode is #205

They use songs to introduce the different segments, and in the introduction to the segment describing the people in the "Gay Straight Alliance/Women's Issues" group, they used Tori's "Mr. Zebra".

There is also a small segment about the kids in the school who wear faerie wings a lot, but there is no direct Tori reference with that.

It's an interesting look into the life of Palo Alto high schoolers. I don't know when and if they are going to be repeating it though.

"Not tonight Josephine"

(August 28, 2000) - Mark Weidman reports:

I was watching this Alfred Hitchcock movie called "Family Plot" (1976) starring Bruce Dern (Jurassic Park's Laura Dern's father). Anyway there is a part where Bruce Dern is talking with his girlfriend, "Blanche", and she wants him to spend the night. He replies, "Not tonight, Josephine."

(August 28, 2000) - Sarah van der Wal saw this and reminds everyone that:

"Not tonight Josephine" ... is quite a famous quote from History, and the whole song is about Napoleon, who actually SAID it to his wife, Josephine. The rest of the song has repeated references to Napoleon, including Moscow burning (which he tried, succeeded, but failed a invading russia) etc.

Alloy Pop Quiz

(August 27, 2000) - Lipglossqueen reports:

Tori is mentioned in the Alloy quiz "What is Your Style Profile?" in the following question. You can take this quiz at Alloy.com:

    3. The celeb you'd most wanna be for a day is:

      a. Reese Witherspoon. Imagine having curly-haired cutie Ryan Phillippe all to yourself!

      b. Shirley Manson. She's a bit spooky, but can still pull off a vinyl mini like no one's business.

      c. TORI AMOS. Imagine the damage you could do with your feminine wiles plus that siren-like voice.

      d. Gwenyth Paltrow. Like being a modern-day Audrey Hepburn, minus the cheesy pearls.

      e. Anna Kornikova. Have you seen her in that men's mag this month? All that and a killer backhand.

      f. Bjork. Kind of a cross between a cartoon character and an alien. If anyone knows where the portal to the fifth dimension is, it's her.

Irish Times article on "Big Brother"

(August 26, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

I found an article about the TV show "Big Brother" at the web site for the Irish Times. The author of the article, Kathryn Holmquist, writes, "Is it fun? Or is it betrayal and humiliation for our entertainment? Big Brother is where voyeurism finally turns on us all." Besides being interesting reading, Tori is mentioned. Here is the part that mentions Tori:

There are even Websites - such as BrainBlitz.com - that let you spy on what other people are doing. You can amuse yourself by watching other people's thought processes as they type in "key words". One example that I found the other night went like this: dancing+baby . . . happy+puppy . . . picturepost . . . adult+stories . . . models . . . jennicam . . . tori+amos . . . continental+airlines . . . geneology . . . linux . . . f*** . . . thumbnail+gallery+post. The story was all there: a surfer had started out looking for the dancing babies and ended by downloading pornographic images. As an insight into human nature, it cannot be beat.

Fairtunes.com

(August 26, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

I found an interesting article at Ottawa Citizen Online on August 25, 2000 by Andrew Flynn. It talks about a web site called Fairtunes.com. Here is part of the article.

If you're feeling a little guilty about the hundreds of MP3s you've downloaded without paying but still don't feel like shelling out for a CD, Fairtunes.com believes it can help.

The Winnipeg-based Web service allows fans to make financial contributions to a musical artist -- any artist. It's kind of like an Internet tip jar with a pay-what-you-like philosophy, and its designers hope it will help musicians get their just desserts in the digital domain.

You can read the full article at Ottawa Citizen Online. (You may even want to contribute some money to Tori! ;) At the end they list the top 10 artists by number of contributions and dollar amount, and Tori is on both lists. Here they are:

Top 10 by number of contributions (after one month): Ani DiFranco, above, 8. The Tragically Hip, 7. Sarah McLachlan, 6. Barenaked Ladies, 5. Rage Against the Machine, 5. Tori Amos, 5. Metallica, 4. Noisies, 4. U2, 4. Moby, 4.

Top 10 donations in U.S. dollars: U2, $80. Tori Amos, $60. Hole, $46.45. Qkumba Zoo, $40. Rage Against the Machine, $39. WDTCE, $35. Sarah McLachlan, $32.50. Cake, $31.50. Nine Inch Nails, $27.27. Portishead, $27.

Bill Miller

(August 26, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

I found an article called "Native American music finally getting recognized" at Spokane.net, the web site for the Spokesman Review. The article was posted on August 24, 2000 and was written by Richard Chang originally for the Orange County Register. You can read this article at Spokane.net. Here is the part that mentions Bill Miller and Tori. Bill opened for Tori during the 1994 Under The Pink tour, and on a personal note, he was one of her best opening acts in my opinion!

Activist John Trudell (Santee Sioux) and singer-songwriter Bill Miller (Mohican) are often cited as the first artists to bring the music -- mixed with rock, folk and country -- to a wider, non-Indian audience. Trudell has long collaborated with Jackson Browne, and Miller has toured with Pearl Jam and Tori Amos.

Snake River Conspiracy

(August 26, 2000) - Karac (bakerbaker) reports:

I found this little snipet about Tori in "The Other Paper" (Aug.24-30,2000). A weekly paper here in Columbus, Ohio.

"Jewel and Tori Amos may seem kind of wimpy, but they're indirectly responsible for Snake River Conspiracy's latest, Sonic Jihad, being the aural assault that it is. "We started putting this album together when (they) were whinning all over the radio," says songwriter Jason Slater in the band's media info. "all the 'poor me' bullshit was making me puke." The voice in the songs belongs to Tobey Torres, who's comfortable with screaming."

Mike, don't know if you've ever heard of Snake River Conspiracy...they had a song out earlier this year "vulcan" and currently radio is spinning a Smiths cover they did.

(August 26, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

I found an article like this online at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette web site from August 25, 2000. It says:

Sick to death of Tori Amos, Jewel and other whining female artists, Jason Slater took it on himself, a few years back, to prove that "chick rock" didn't necessarily have to be so wimpy.

First, of course, he had to find a "chick" with ... you know, guts.

And that's exactly what he found in Snake River Conspiracy frontwoman Tobey Torres, a former exotic dancer whose vocals sound as dangerous when whispering seductively on "Breed" as they do when she's screaming profanities fit to charm a savage Ozzfest crowd on "Vulcan."

I just have to say that the people writing that obviously do not know Tori's music very well! Placing her in the same category of artists as Jewel is quite incorrect.

Rolling Stone: The Illustrated Portraits

(August 22, 2000) - Brent Leonesio reports:

Tori & crew thanked on new Unbelievable Truth album

(August 22, 2000) - Marinus de Goederen reports:

Tori Amos and crew are 'thank you'd on 'sorrythankyou', the new album by Unbelievable Truth, the band of Andy Yorke, the brother of Thom Yorke (Radiohead).

Lipstick article in the Kansas City Star

(August 22, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

I found an article on Lipstick on the Kansas City Star web site by JACKIE WHITE. The article looks at the amazing new variety of choices and how different companies are trying to differentiate their cosmetic products. You can read the entire article at the Kansas City web site, but here is the part that mentions Tori:

Makeup artist Robin Siegel offered Plume, the honey shade Aniston apparently wore during her recent wedding ceremony. And the grape-toned Voyage is billed as the favorite of Courtney Love and Tori Amos. A portion of the proceeds from the group will go to Children's Miracle Network, an organization that raises funds of children's hospitals.

"Celebrity sells," says Paula Begoun, a cosmetics consumer advocate and author of Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me. It's no accident actresses have become the magazine cover girls of today, she says, and get big contracts to appear in cosmetics ads. More than ever before, cosmetics companies are capitalizing on the name game.
