Sightings reported from March 1, 1997 through April 30, 1997 Professional Widow Heard During A Dutch Soap(Apr 30) - Dennis Snelders reports: "I was watching the dutch soap 'Fort Alpha' on television when suddenly I heard 'professional widow' in the background! Unfortunately it was the armand mix of the song and not the album version, but it was Tori!" Unreleased Tori Remix Medley Placed At D.C. Dance Club(Apr 30) - kmaxx reports: "I was at TRACKS, a nightclub in Washington DC (actually a dance club,) and the in house DJ played a medley of Tori remixes that I hadnt heard! They were great for dancing (shit otherwise,) and when I say medley I mean like 12 minutes of Tori, 3-4 minutes per song. It started out with what sounded like the Funkin Trunkin mix of PW except that the vocals were really high pitched..but the music wasnt sped up, nor was the speed of the vocals...then it went into a mix of Horses that was really really weird, it sounded like a callopie at a circus..(humor me...dum dah dah duh dah dah dum dah dah duh dah dah..get it?) and then it went into the Superfly lines only broken up.."Off*pause*with*pause*supsuperfly*pause*etc.." then a Blood Roses remix that was simply the repeating of "I think you're a queer I think you're a queer I think you're a queer." It concluded with the Synthasa version of Talula..part of it anyways." Tori Mentioned During Geography Class!(Apr 30) - Julia Kun reports: "I was in geography class yesterday and we had to watch a video called "The Destruction of Valcanoes". In the video they talked about the different valcanoes that are found in Hawaii and the destruction that they caused. The guy in the video said that his favourite was Pele, which erupted on his birthday. He then went on to say that the singer Tori Amos has made a tribute to Pele with her new album, and played a bit of 'Muhammad My Friend' (the part that goes "Moses I know, I know you've seen fire, but you've never seen fire, until you've seen Pele blow)! Wow, talk about weird places to hear Tori!" Tori Heard In TV Commercial For Police Drama(Apr 30) - Christine reports: "Hey Mike, I saw this commercial last week and I should have written sooner but here goes...they kept showing a commercial for a TV show on I THINK ABC...anyway, I think the show was called "High Incident" (I THINK) and it's a police drama...in the commercial they played this music--what it was was the part in Precious Things where Tori moans, I think in the beginning: ya know, "Aaaaaaiiiiyyyyaaaaiiii...so I ran faster, but it caught me here..." and anyway, in the commercial it sounded like they just kept the moaning on repeat, they never played Tori singing actual words. But the theme of the episode had to do with religion, so it was kinda appropriate. :) Tori's just EVERYwhere, isn't she?! No complaints here!" Did Tori Inspire A Character In 2000 A.D.?(Apr 30) - Eric reports: "In an issue of 2000 A.D. (the most popular comic in England, which I have imported to my local comic shop. It is really a shame that it is not popular in America. It also used to frequently have stuff by Neil's hero, Alan Moore, who got Neil to be his successor on Miracleman before Neil had even written any comics at all.), there is a Dredd story called "The Rise and fall of Chair Man Dilbert", about a guy named Dilbert Bowels, who unwittingly ends up becoming a piece of modern art, when he ends up getting a job as a piece of human furniture at an eccentric's dinner party, and ends up getting high on his celebrity, only to be kidnapped and kept prisoner by an art collector. It all begins when he gets to the party, and has to get naked on all fours and let someone sit on his back. However, he is thrilled to find that the person sitting on him is none other than Abelia Karam, the most beautiful woman in all of Mega-City One (which takes up the eastern seaboard, except for Florida). The artist of the story, whose name is Trevor Hairsine, must be a Tori fan, as I see a resemblance to Tori [in the character of Abelia]...." Tori in a Book Entitled "It Crawled From The South: REM Companion"(Apr 25) - Johnson Liu reported to the Torinews Mailing List: "There are several brief mentions of Tori in a book entitled "It Crawled from the South: REM Companion" by Marcus Gray. The book describes how Michael Stipe went to Tori's Atlanta concert in 1994 and how he took time off from a Dublin tour to make a duet with Tori. It has an interesting quote by Michael regarding his part in the duet as sounding like "Moses parting the Red Sea..." Tori In Another Crossword Puzzle(Apr 25) - Jennifer Li reports: "In the new People magazine, the Before They Were Famous issue, Tori appears in the crossword puzzle. Number 12 across says Tori_______ (Cornflake Girl)." Tori In The Book "The Sex Revolts"(Apr 22) - Sara Doyon reports: "I was in Borders book store the other day and i was looking through this book called "The sex revolts" and it has in it alot of different artists and on page 266-269 (i belive that was the page #) that a little bit on Tori it was all stuff i had read somewhere else but i know all the die hard fans that look at your site and i think some that love Tori as much as i do might want to take a look at it." Tori Heard in the Metro in Lyon, France(Apr 21) - Brian reports: "I think I semi-win for the strangest place to hear a Tori Amos song. :) I spent 3 weeks in France at the end of March into April and I was in Lyon for 2 weeks. So anyways... I walked into the metro station near where one of my friends was living and all of a sudden I heard "Crucify" playing over the metro radio. So... there you go... Tori Amos in the metro in Lyon, France! :) It was actually really kewl. " Tori in the Syndicated L.A. Times Crossword Puzzle(Apr 16) - Jamie Beckman reports: "I was doing today's syndicated L.A. Times crossword puzzle in my local paper when I saw that the clue for 6 Down was "Amos or Spelling". You can guess what the answer was.=)" Tori Poster Seen In Movie 'The Devil's Own'(Apr 15) - Kim Rygiel reports: "In that new brad pitt/harrison ford movie, [The Devil's Own], my friend said that in the daughter's room is a tori poster." Kelly Stitzel Brings Tori To The Body Shop!(Apr 13) - Kelly Stitzel reports: "I could be responsible for people hearing Tori while shopping. I work at The Body Shop in Cincinnati, Ohio and we have to bring in our own music. Whenever I get the chance, I bring Tori. I have to be careful about what I play because we don't want to offend any customers, so usually I make my own compilation tapes with stuff that would be okay to play in the store. So, Toriphiles living in Cincinnati that shop at our store may come in to hear some Tori because of me." Tori In The J. Crew Dressing Room(Apr 13) - Michelle Francis reports: "Another weird time I heard Tori's music was in the dressing room at J. Crew. I was in there trying on stuff when all of a sudden I hear Tori's cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." It really impressed me because I don't generally think of Tori and J. Crew in the same sentence. So I started singing along until my friends so politely told me to shut up." "The New Music" From Toronto(Apr 13) - Owen reports: "CityTV of Toronto has an original program called "The New Music". They recently did a segment on dancing, where one of the reporters went around from club to club asking people about what they liked and how they liked to dance to. The "Star Trunk Funkin' Mix" of Professional Widow was heard for most of the segment in the background (I guess it took less than eight minutes to shoot!) The clincher detail was that one of the dancers was asked what their favourite dance song is, and she responded, "Well, this one's pretty cool!" " Yet Another Tori Song On All My Children(Apr 13) - Elizabeth reports: "Today I heard yet another Tori song on All My Children. It was in the background at the club/restaurant Holidays. "Silent All These Years" was on. Someone on that set must be a huge Tori Amos fan since I've heard "Caught A Lite Sneeze," "Little Drummer Boy," and now SATY!! I even think "Cornflake Girl" was played once. Each Tori song is somewhat fitting to the storyline too." Tori Seen In Pizza Hut...Sorta(Apr 13) - Allyson Boggess -- reports: "In a Pizza Hut in Fairport, NY (near Rochester), they have a juke box in the corner. They have album covers that you can pick from that rotate under the glass case. And guess who's lovely picture I saw as one of the selections? Tori's! (naw, really?) I haven't really examined it, but I know there's Under the Pink in the juke box. I have this great temptation to play "The Waitress" :) That would be perfect, now wouldn't it?" Online Version Of PC World(Apr 13) - Joe C. reports: " I subscribe to several of those HTML-coated email-mailing lists that take advantage of Netscape's "Inbox Direct". One of them is an Online version of the magazine PC World It shows up as an e-mail, full of "teasers" with hyperlinks to their web site where you can read the actual articles. In today's edition, one such teaser is touting a CD-ROM gadget and states: "The boss walks in on you as your CD player is blasting the latest Tory Amos album. Do you panic? No, just hit the panic button in a little free utility, and you'll be, er, jamming." I was so surprised because I NEVER read that particular thing which fills up my mailbox. For some odd reason, I looked at it this time, possibly because the tea that I was drinking went to my head :) The article goes on to name Blind Melon and Pavarotti in the same capacity. Only the teaser had Tori's name (notice how they misspelled her as Tory?); as far as I know the May 7 magazine article does not mention her. But you may read the article at PCworld.com." "Ring My Bell" & "Blue Skies" Heard in Express(Apr 13) - Matt and Kelly Stitzel reports the following: Matt says "just remembered that i was in that clothes store, Express and oddly enough they were playing tori and even oddly-er it was tori's cover of Ring My Bell that i have only found on the newer bootleg release of YKTR with those bonus tracks.." Kelly adds, "I was in an Express store not too long ago and they were playing Blue Skies. I couldn't believe my ears and made a point to tell the people I was with what the song was and who was singing it." Q101 Radio in Chicago "Rates" Tori(Apr 6) - SubHuman88 reports: "On Q101 radio in Chicago, on the Wendy & Bill Show, they were rating celebrities' looks. They were saying how ugly Tori SPELLING is, and then went on to our Tori. Wendy, Bill, and Vic the Engineer all agreed that she was a 10+ out of ten, but then said they were biased judges because they loved her. " Live 105 Radio Commercial With Tori(Apr 6) - San Francisco Toriphile Rebecca reports: "I was driving home from school yesterday, listening to the radio station Live 105 (KITS San Francisco), and they were playing a commercial for the radio station. First, Gwen from No Doubt came on and said "Hi, this is Gwen, and you're listening to Live 105..... a few other artists came on, and then , all of a sudden, I heard "Hi, this is Tori Amos, and you're listening to Live 105...." It was my perk for the day!" Swedish Book Is Under The Pink(Apr 3) - Swedish Toriphile Christina Stalby reports: "There's a book in Sweden called 'Under det rosa tcket' which means 'Under the pink cover'. It's about feminism and women's rights, and I just thought it was a funny coincidence that the title matched so well with Under the Pink" Tori's Name Mentioned During Roseanne(Apr 3) - A rerun of the show Roseanne in late March 1997 gave people another chance to see the comment made about Tori on that show. It was originally aired in January of 1997. Karen Hagglund describes the incident: "On ABC TV's Roseanne show tonight, January 28, a negative comment was made about our dear Tori. In this episode, Roseanne has been locked away for four days in her bedroom eating junk food and being upset over her tv hubby Dan falling for another woman. The family is downstairs trying to dream up ways to get her to come out of the bedroom. Roseanne's sister Jackie suggests they play loud, grating, annoying music like they did in Waco to flush Roseanne out of the room. The character named Leon Carp, played on the show by Martin Mull, says that he has just two words to say- TORI AMOS! The teenage girl on the show (the girlfriend of Roseanne's son D.J.) says 'wait a minute, I like her.'" Tori, Chinese Food, And Muzak(Mar 19) - Kim Johnson informs us: "I was enjoying some delicious Chinese food the other day in the China Dynasty restaurant in Borger, Texas when low and behold the muzak version of Cornflake Girl came on. I entertained the surrounding tables with the my (as a friend recalls, all too loud) rendition of the lyrics." Tori Song used for German TV movie(Mar 19) - Eric (with a 'c') posted this to the RDT mailing list: "Today I was just zapping through some TV stations while relaxing after work - when suddenly I heard familiar sounds. It took me three seconds to identify Tori's 'Not The Red Baron'. It was used for a TV movie as identification melody for the character of a girl. The song was later played several times (only the instrumental part at the beginning) when the girl was running in the forest to get her thoughts straight again. From the point I started to watch the movie (in order to be able to tell you all about it), the song was used in an appropriate way. The character of the girl was complicated, had different layers - and the combination of running and thinking was well supported by the piano chords of 'Not The Red Baron'. The fact that the song was used in that movie at all indicates that meanwhile Tori has some 'friends' nearly everywhere. I think the song would not have been in there if the director would not have liked it." People Puzzler(Mar 15) - Kim H. informs us: On page 106 of the 3/3/97 issue of People magazine (with Party of 5 on the cover) the People Puzzler (OK i was bored LOL) has as #52 across, "Pop singer Tori ___" AMOS of course is the answer !! **G** The clues which use Tori's last name are a movie with Leonardo di Caprio, one with Drew Barrymore, and one with George Clooney....and "Ted Kennedy's title (?)". Tori's Name Mentioned On Entertainment Tonight(Mar 15) - Matthew informs us: "Very interesting place I heard Tori's name. I was watching Entertainment Tonight, something I don't do except only in passing at times, but they had a thing on a make up artist to the stars. And at one point he said, "This is the blush I use on people from TORI AMOS to Rupaul."(or something like that). Now even though she was the only musician he mentioned, which I kinda smiled at, I really got the shudders having Rupaul being mentioned along side Tori. Hopefully he was contrasting the to, and not comparing...hopefully." Muzak Tori(Mar 15) - David/Figg informs us: "I have heard a muzak version of Tori's Cornflake Girl played at Gottschalks, a local department store in Central California (much in the same vein as say, JC Penney's). Of course, my head supplied the lyrics." Issue #40 of the DC comic Robin(Mar 14) - Mike Harris informs us: Issue #40 of the DC comic _Robin_ (involving the adventures of Tim
Drake, the young man currently in the role of Batman's sidekick)
features a story about Tim helping his girlfriend deal with a date
near-rape in her past. At the very end, the editor wrote the
following:
"When Chuck Dixon told me what he wanted to do in this issue, I was
hesitant. I wondered if the subject matter wasn't a bit too heavy for
us. But then several knowledgeable people convinced me that the kind
of things Chuck wrote about are happening to young people constantly
and that we might be doing the real-life Tims and Arianas a service if
we showed them that they are not alone.
"If you, like Ariana, are having a problem with dating and/or sex that
you feel you can't discuss with those closest to you, you might find
the following phone number useful. It will put you in touch with
someone who can help.
1-800-656-HOPE
"If you're not, we hope our story will help you understand those who
are having those problems. And we hope everyone enjoyed it."
You'll notice, of course, that 1-800-656-HOPE is RAINN's number.
Rather cool, huh? If you want to direct people to send thank-you
mail to them, according to the site, you can have them send it to
DCOBatMail@aol.com.
YKTR on MTV's Singled Out(Mar 13) - Stacey posted this to the Torinews mailing list: "I was boredly watching Singled Out (of the eighties) edition this morning when I hear a tiny piece of Fayth as they were going to comerical...It took me a few seconds to figure out which song it was...because their little DJ just kept re-spinning one tiny segment and added in his own little mix to it. It wasn't really worth hearing, unless ou already saw it, but it's nice to know that YKTR is kinda remembered" Tori mentioned in Recent CMJ Ani Difranco Article(Mar 13) - Dedi informs us: "The writer (Lois Maffeo) is discussing 'the weirdness i feel when people try and talk to me about their favorite girl singer/songwriter.' and then mentioned an encounter with some Ears With Feet. 'I found myself having to dig myself out of some deep doodoo when I was set upon by some angry Tori Amos fans who objected to a joke I made about the commercial jackpot she hit by breastfeeding a pig.'" Tori mentioned in the April 1997 Alternative Press(Mar 13) - Dedi informs us: "Thought you might like to know that i saw Tori mentioned in the April issue of Alternative Press. They had an article on bootlegging so i thought "Hey! They have to include Tori!" And Lo and behold they did. However it is just a mention of her name as one of the most bootlegged (she was at the top)." The Ira Robbins' "Trouser Press Record Guide"(Mar 13) - Johnson Liu posted this information to the Torinews mailing list. Though he calls it something different, I think he is actually refering to the Trouser Press Record Guide! "At Borders Books and Music, I found another book called "Pressed Trousers Guide to Rock" (not to be confused with something called "Rough Guide to Rock Music") that has a full page and half devoted to our beloved Fig Newton. She gets a surprisingly positive review for BfP, that is compared in terms of content to LE. Nothing really new that the critic had to say, but it was nice to see Tori is mentioned in almost all of these musical critique guides." Tori Mentioned On Howard Stern(Mar 13) - ToriHead@aol.com informs us: "Tori was mentioned on Howard Stern this morning, 3-12-97. She was refered to the one who's whole career is based on rape. This said after a reference to Fiona Apple was abused in youth." (Note From Mikewhy: If this is true it is yet another stupid comment from Howard. But that is what people expect from him isn't it? My apologies to Stern fans...) Tori Mentioned In Keyboard Magazine(Mar 13) - Johnson Liu posted the following to the Torinews mailing list: "A tiny bit of Torispotting from the April 1997 Keyboard magazine. Richard Leiter writes in his "Composing" column: "For some real inspiration, I commend to you the piano arranging of ...Tori Amos,[heavy hitter piano composers listed, including Franz Schubert]. They've all written piano accompaniments that are worthy of the term 'composition'". Thanks, Richard. We all know Tori will be recognized in the future as the Tchaikovsky of our generation." Rock Band 'Ben Folds Five' Talks Tori(Mar 1) - mpak informs us: "I was looking around for info on the group Ben Folds Five and I came across this... ;o) They're a band from Chapel Hill, North Carolina with a piano, bass and drums. They have recently been signed to a major label deal. Enjoy. The complete interview is at globaldialog.com. Turntable: What do you think of Tori Amos?
Ben: Oh, I love Tori Amos. A lot of people just hate her, or they
absolutely love her and I really like Tori Amos a lot. One of
my favorite records I have in my collection right now is this bootleg
Tori Amos record, "After the Rain." It's a great record.
Turntable: I'm a really big Tori Amos fan myself. A huge one, in fact.
Ben: Oh, good. I'm glad. I was afraid I'd lost you there because a lot
of people are like... because someone asked me about
"Forrest Gump" and I totally lost them on that and we ended up arguing
about it.
Turntable: I just picked up her new album, too.
Ben: Is it good?
Turntable: Well, I didn't really like the last one very much, especially
in comparison to "Little Earthquakes," which is, in my
opinion, the best album ever recorded.
Ben: Yeah, I think that even if you don't like her, her music is what
she does. Plus, she's like one of the greatest piano
players you've heard playing pop music and she's such a good singer,
too, that based on that, she should be huge. Professional Widow Greets Diners At Larry Parkers(Mar 1) - Kim H. informs us: "I was in a diner in Beverly Hills called Larry Parker's. it's got a huge menu and really fresh good food from health to soul food, well they also play videos while u eat on several overhead TVs, and the music plays too, the loudness depending on the hour....well i'm eating some really good french fries (tho i've yet to try it Tori's way, with mustard *G*) and i hear something familiar "It's gotta be big" then i look up and the Professional Widow video is playing ! Since most of the videos played in Larry Parker's are r & b, i was surprised, but needless to say it made me enjoy my meal even more !!" Tori's Music Used on NBC's Extra(Mar 1) - Carlos Torres informs us: "The T.V. tabloid show "Extra" on NBC played the introduction to "Muhammed My Friend" during a story on bizzare religious cults on March 1st." Tori Remix Used On Howard Stern Commercial(Mar 1) - Joe C. informs us: "I was watching MTV today, at about 1:30 pm (eastern) they showed Howard Stern driving around in a limo, promoting his new movie. In the background they were playing Armands's Professional Widow mix as the score." Tori On "Absolute Dance"(Mar 1) - Christina Stalby informs us: "I just thought that you'd might want to know that 'Professional Widow (Armands star funk trunk mix)' is on a swedish album called "Absolute Dance", with various dance and techno artists. I don't think it's much to brag about, since I think they've ruined the whole song, but it's Tori news anyway! They've advertised for the CD on Swedish TV, and they've shown a clip from the PW video too!" Strange Professional Widow Remix(Mar 1) - Greyfalcon posted the following to the Torinews mailing list: "Hey, I was at a dance club in Bermuda called Oasis on Saturday night (well actually early Sunday morning) and they played a remix of Professional Widow. IT wasn't one that I recognized from the single. (although it was kind of hard to tell). It had the lines "Bring it close to my lips. Bring it close to my lips. It's gotta be big." (This was the only lyric, repeated many many times.) The thing is it didn't sound like Tori, it sounded like it was mixed in such a way that the vocals were lower. It almost sounded like a man's voice. It definitely didn't sound like Tori. Also, there was no hint of the music from the original song (which most of the remixes at least had some of the melody somehwere) So, does anyone know if there's another remix floating around other than the ones on the single. (The DJ was not that good as to do his own remix, so he must ahve gotten it from somewhere.)" Tori Inspires The Karen Goldberg Trio(Mar 1) - Olivia Antsis informs us: "On Valentine's Day, I was working as the house manager for my school's concert hall. Our school was sponsoring this benifit show called "Concert of the Heart". Two bands were scheduled to perform; "The Richard Walton Band" and "The Karen Goldberg Trio". Although I was hoping for something Tori-related to happen that night-- I was not expecting anything...(you know how we Tori fans are--always hoping...) "The Karen Goldberg Trio" was scheduled during my break--so I sat in on a couple of songs. The band seemed to have a jazzy, folk-influenced, lots of acoustic guitar kinda sound to them. Karen was the lead guitarist and the main vocalist. As I listened to her voice, the more Joni Mitchell (Tori's cover of A case of you) I heard in it. After the concert, she was signing some cd's and talking to a few audience members. She introduced herself to me and made some comment about the funny way we were spending our Valentine's Day. I was kinda curious if Joni was in fact an influence to her music, so I asked her about it. She answered by informing that Joni as well as Tori!!! were major influences to her music and that she herself is a Tori Amos fan. I was so happy to here that, more so, that she was the one who mentioned Tori, not me." |
