MTV Fanatic
|
Tori was featured on MTV Fanatic (episode #316) on Wednesday, July 21 at 10:30PM ET. (The show also had a segment on Faith Evans.) The show featured a fan named Sara Bickford who got to meet Tori and ask her questions. I enjoyed Tori and Sara, but I have to say that I did not care for how MTV produced this show. They kept going back and forth between the Tori fan and the Faith Evans fan which was distracting. The constantly moving camera, the quick edits, the showing of one line of conversation followed by video footage and then another one liner and more video footage I found to be somewhat irritating. Maybe I am getting old! Most of the show was spent showing the people who got to meet their favorite artist get ready for the interview and talk about their artist.. The actual interviews with the artists themselves were very short. I also have to say the whole thing felt contrived, a feeling mirrored by Tori and Sara themselves when Tori said at the end, "I wish I could talk to you off camera" and Sara replied "So do I." The questions Sara asked dealt with Tori's band, her wedding and the Jackie's Strength video, Marianne, and the ways Tori has helped and inspired Sara. Below I have a complete transcript of the Tori interview and several photos from the show. (Thanks to Sara Mackey for the transcript. You can see additional photos on Sara Mackey's web site.) One interesting thing was the announcer at the end of the show who said, "Catch Tori live in August in an all request concert at mtv.com." MTV must be planning something special for the upcoming 5 1/2 Weeks Tour!
The MTV Web Site has a special Fanatic preview that you should still be able to access for a while. You can see a short clip from the show in RealVideo. You can also still read an article about the person chosen to be on Fanatic in the newspaper for the University of California at Santa Cruz called the Slugwire City On A Hill Press from June 3, 1999. Fanatic will be repeated again on MTV Thursday, July 22 at 7:30PM ET, Saturday, July 24 at 9:00PM ET, Sunday, July 25 at 1:30AM (Late Saturday Night) and Sunday, July 25 at 8:30AM ET.

The show started by introducing the fan that was picked-a girl named Sara. They showed a few clips of some of her videos, and gave a couple biographical blurbs. They were:
"Won a scholarship a age five to study classical piano at the Peabody Conservatory of Music"
"Co-founded RAINN (rape, abuse, and incest national network) which has helped over 200,000 survivors"
"Tours this summer with Alanis Morissette and releases her new album 'To Venus and Back' in September"
Interview Transcript (Sara asking the questions.)
-What made you work with a band on your new album 'From the Choirgirl Hotel'?
Tori-Think about it-once you've been with a lover for a year or two, even though they're a wonderful lover the first couple times when you were so blown away that hey were this person, you get used to them, and that's sort of what happens as an artist, you know? You have to keep trying to top yourself.
-It's very true, and you always manage to do it although I don't know how.
Tori-It's very tricky, you have to be ruthless with yourself.
-In 'Jackie's Strength' you talk about a wedding-was it your wedding? What can you tell me about your ceremony and the meaning behind that song?
Tori- The wedding was...um...really neat. I think part of me thought I was never going to get married. So when he asked me...um...I dropped my teacup, and for some reason it felt...it just felt right. I wrote 'Jackie's Strength" right after he had asked me, and I think a part of me is the girl in 'Jackie's Strength" who never made it to the church that day. A part of me ended up at a 7-11, sitting in my...I don't know...my Pat Benatar tight white lycra sipping a slurpee and just not going. That's what the song is about. The other part of me went and did it...so...lovely.
-Yeah, quite lovely, I saw pictures. Since I've been listening to your music I've picked up the piano a little bit. Yu've really inspired me to find that sort of outlet in my life, and its really helped me get to the source of my emotions and deal with them, and be able to move on through it. Its the greatest gift you could've given me through your music-it's really been a wonderful thing for me.
(Tori gives a cute little thumbs-up)
-Who was Marianne and what was your relationship to her? I mean she's mentioned on almost every album and I know you've refered to her as a very special person, a very magical person in your life. Was she just a very dear friend, or...
Tori-Marianne was this person I knew in junior high school, and I think anytime anybody was in her presence they felt seen. Its such a gift when you can make another person feel like you've seen them. She really saw you for who you were-whoever you were. So when she died at about 15, a lot of people went into a deep depression because...Marianne gave everybody something of themselves that, say, your parents couldn't give you because they want you to be something you don't want to be. So it was quite...quite a loss.
-It's amazing when people can reach out and touch so many people like that.
Tori-Yeah, it's such a gift. It's funny how gits aren't valued sometimes...but she really had that.
-It's really such an honor to meet you and talk to you in person...
Tori-I wish I could talk to you off camera.
-So do I!
After the interview they showed Tori giving her a hug, and they both seemed very happy. You could tell she was feeling very touched and emotional.
