Tori appeared on the After Fox Breakfast Show on January 30, 1997. The show began at 9:00AM EST on the Fox network. Tori was her usual charming self. What is it about that woman that makes me want to listen to her speak endlessly? Anyway, she did not sing, but made some interesting conversation, and looked smashing in yet another great looking scarf! Tori's promotion of RAINN was the primary purpose of the visit.
Kim H. saw the show and sends me a detailed summary of what happened. Thank you Kim for helping me report on this!
tori was all you would expect, to the point, considerate, funny as heck. at one point, the host said that tori had suggested something for the musical interlude (he had stated earlier that for once she got to just talk and wasn't expected to sing). they then played track #7 from pat boone's new cd, in a metal mood, (or something--he's made a cd of rock songs and is on its cover in leather & chains etc.) i thought this was HILARIOUS. this is just my type of humor. in fact, i had thought about buying this cd, but for sure i will now! (FYI the song goes something like "take my hand, we're off to never-neverland.")
tori herself did not sing.
suzanne somers was on in the segment before tori. in it, the host lost a bet that suzanne couldn't go 3 minutes without saying "somercize", the name of her exercise videos. so he had to jump fully clothed into the shower! (the set is a huge penthouse apartment, the same one i think as on the show FX).
tori was on next and when the host apologized
and explained why he looked 'so bad', tori said
that suzanne had promised to jump in the shower the next time.
apparently this was so.
then suzanne joked, "with tori". to which tori
at first smiled and shook her head silently, then
said, drily, "i can't...i can't compete, suzanne."
i couldn't help but think of the line in putting
the damage on about angie dickinson. suzanne
and angie are sort of under the same heading
IMHO. tori and suzanne got along well tho,
especially after the host (tom something i
think--sorry) mentioned suzanne's own battle
to overcome a dark past (he was referring here
to suzanne's dad's alcoholism and its effect
on her childhood, which she has written about).
he then asked them both at what point does
one have the ability to go public with a private
pain. tori turned to suzanne, who said something about time and
perspective etc and
asked if tori agreed to which tori simply said
yes.
tori had also talked about jessen (that makes at least two mentions now!) -- the host guy asked about 'the guy with all the tattoos". tori said she told him she liked the number 12 that jessen should stop there. she then said he was 'great, i mean he wears these faerie wings and army boots' etc.
then they talked a bit about RAINN and told the phone # and the story about the girl backstage one nite who wanted to go home with tori (more on this on the RAINN tv broadcast page) and how she decided there were many people who needed access to people who could help them and that tori also felt she wasn't trained to help them personally, knowing her own experience but not how to help others as well as other better trained people could etc (i'm paraphrasing like mad here).
tori stuck around for the next segment, in which jonathan silverman of tv's "the single guy" was the guest. it looked to me as if tori was less than thrilled being there for this, i mean dropping mr. slick actor-guy into the mix was like putting vinegar on a great strawberry shortcake IMHO. she mostly didn't say much. a clip was shown from his show, which i found to be a bit misogynistic. again IMHO. anyway tori sipped on some sort of brownish drink with whipped cream, it looked like a starbucks container but i'm not sure. she was silent as the others discussed mardi gras, but when asked simply said that she "isn't good in crowds".
after the commercial break (the next segment
was gonna be on the book 101 lies men tell
women--now THAT i woulda been eager to hear tori's feedback on, but i
guess she was
ready to go) they came back to tom (whom
tori seemed to like just fine) giving tori a tour
of the "apt" because she "has to go now". he
said he wanted to show her where she'd play
next time, and tori went "oh! yeh!" he then showed her the apt's
"ballroom", a huge room
with high ceilings, apparent marble floors, and
a few chairs for an 'audience'. tori immediately
pronounced this room 'too formal' and said
excitedly she wanted to play in the bathroom.
he expressed surprise, but tori was emphatic,
that 'this is just too formal for me,' while she
stared up at the high ceilings.
so they went back down the hall to the bathroom, which was also huge by the way, and tori excitedly said her piano was 9 feet long but would fit, they'd just have to move the tub. tom said they could do that, and tori referring again to an earlier segment, said he could be in the shower, he could be singing in the shower. tom said he was her willing um....and searched for a non offensive word i think, to which tori stepped in and said, "vocalist." she started to leave then but he asked her to give the # one more time so she took his offered hand and they said together, "1-800-656-HOPE". it would make a cute sound byte. they were, like, in harmony! then she disappeared down the hallway. :-(
i did forget to say that in tori's first segment they talked briefly about all the people who have tori sites on the web. basically tom asked tori whether she ever read any of them. she gave a quick and emphatic "no" and explained that she felt this was "their place to talk about things" and that often she was the starting point but that then they went on to discuss other more personal things, and make friends, etc. and that if they wanted to say she was crabby that day etc they should feel they could do that. this is the second time i have heard tori refer to the sites as having negative things about her, and if that is her impression, i REALLY wish someone close to her would tell her how far from the truth that is. perhaps tori would be amazed HOW far from the truth it is. the 'worst' i've ever read about tori on the web was that she looked tired, and that seemed to be out of concern for her, not cattiness. oh well.
it was a good tori appearance and both the hosts (there is also a woman named suzanne, which i didn't mention so as to avoid repeated explanations which suzanne i meant, etc) seemed very respectful of tori. host suzanne even said "it was SO great to have her here" right after tori left. it's always great to see tori get her due.
they also showed a brief glimpse of a website, sadly NOT the Dent. And tori wore black form fitting type slacks and a metallic grey short (cap-) sleeve Tshirt and a maroon long scarf around her neck like she's been doing lately, and had the most recent straight hairdo.
