"Bliss" Commentary & LyricsUpdated August 24, 1999 |
We were told that Tori's new song "Bliss" would be sent to alternative radio on August 6, 1999. However, it appears that at least some radio stations got the song a week early. (I think some other stations are too afraid of getting in trouble to play it early, or so I have heard!) I have received reports from Toriphiles who heard the song as early as Friday, July 30, 1999 and later. Look below for reports from people who have heard the song. You can now order "Bliss" At Spun.com. Amazon.com, or CDnowBe Sure To Also Check Out The Bliss Single Page, where you can find the OFFICIAL lyrics to "Bliss"From JonathanAugust 6, 1999 - To me, "Bliss" is bliss. It is an excellent song. Tori Amos never disappoints me, the new album will definitely have all great songs too. I heard it on mp3 on the net first. Never been on the radio yet here. It hit me when i heard it first. It stirred my emotions, all her songs do. The first time i heard it i automatically loved it. She's kinda gone back to her old ways w/ more piano music. the lyrics are powerful anf beautiful. Hope everyone agrees. From VioletAugust 6, 1999 - father I

From lauren e.August 6, 1999 - well first off, i love it. it's kinda siren/honey/sugar/spark all on acid with a dash of eurhythmics/10,000 maniacs. but i think i've got an idea of lyrics. so here goes: father

steady as it comes From simon jonesAugust 4, 1999 - Let me tell you what this song does to me... It makes me scream, it makes me cry, it forces my anger through a deep dark hole. And when it arrives, cast in stone, my fierce longing grows wider...her voice casting spells and delivering deliverance. Watch it tease as it saunters, down From aminAugust 4, 1999 - I heard bliss. I liked it a lot, I really did. her voice sounds very childish and cute like Merman but the beat accelerated to something that reminded me of Blue Skies. But I m curious as to how she will perform in on letterman. As a piano solo? I hope so! It sounds a lot more marketable then Spark, and it's definetly very catchy and a smart release from Tori, but it doesn't sound like signature Tori music we have heard in the past. I m afraid to say this but it I heard the other instruments and effects in the song and wished them away. I m hoping the new album will have a lot of personal tracks for us toriphiles that hunt for the meaning behind her every lyric, and not just commercial radio sleaze. But again, I did love it and taped it off the radio and listened to it over and over. From Cruel0@aol.comAugust 3, 1999 - Hey everyone, here's my shot at the lyrics. I know they all aren't right but I guess we'll have to wait till the album comes out to see how the goddess tricked us again:) Some of the words I wrote are different than others, but when thinking with the meaning of the song in mind, it goes along lot better : turle (race), 4-horse engine, changing what's in his mind, tearing it sudden-trying to change a way of thinking when it all comes down to "you" and the pressure created from that. I don't know I need to think more about it though. What does everyone else think about that? Father, I

Steady as it comes From MikewhyAugust 3, 1999 - Several sources report that Bliss has been played on radio station WHFS in Washington D.C. during the show Riggs Early Withdraw. From BrianAugust 3, 1999 - This is an addictive new song! While it is said to be about the breakdown of father-daughter relationships, it is a very hopeful-sounding song. I describe it as Sugar-meets-Honey-with-a-touch-of-1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins. From Ekkehard MorgensternAugust 3, 1999 - Hi Mike, here's my guess for the bliss lyrics. Sometimes I couldn't quite comprehend what she sings, so I put in alternative possibilities. Maybe I'm totally off, so I wouldn't put my hand into the fire for that. ;) father I

chorus: the only part that i think is unclear is the "force into me the power of god/four-horse engine with the power of god."Ý i have no idea which one she's saying, they both sound right. From JenyAugust 2, 1999 - Here's another attempt on the lyrics to "Bliss" by meeee, Jeny. :) Some of mine are a bit different from other people's... but... we'll all know soon! I really like the song. It's kind of spooky... you can hear the piano a lot.... and an extreme amount of "i saiiiiddd"s... comparable to the "yes saiiiiid"s of former years. :) The piano hook... the slow repetitive thing throught the song... is such a sense of forboding... like... something reaaally big is going to happen. it's delicious. i like its style better than choirgirl. Father, From Beth CoulterAugust 2, 1999 - I've got this thing downloaded and I've listened to it several times and one thing really sticks out. She says (I Believe) that "*We've* a bliss of another kind" (which makes more sense to me personally). Also, the monkey she mentions; I'm surprised that no one has grabbed the addiction meaning of *Monkey*; when you have a heavy addiction it is a "monkey on your back". In that context with the *We Have*, it makes a fasinating song about the father/daughter relationship, and the addictive quality of love in all of it's various forms. Father (father)

I said,
Steady Yes *this was done line by line with my primo headphones* From Liane BaskinAugust 2, 1999 - I heard Bliss! Wow, I can't believe how good it was. I was driving to work close to 1:00 in the afternoon, desperately hoping to hear the new song on Live 105, (105.3) in Walnut Creek (Northern California.) All of a sudden, I hear this song and I knew right away that it was the new Tori. I just had a feeling, and of course, it was!! Its a lot like how other people have described it, so I won't be repetitive. It sounds somewhat like "Cruel" (I don't know why :) but that same similar dreamy, feeling. She's doing some different things with her voice-it sounds more crisp, and more defined somehow, and stronger in the louder parts. Its got a minor sound to it as well, and yet even though its still Tori, she is going in another direction. But I'm sure you will all still love it because its not so different that its unlikable. Its very hard to make out the words for some reason, but at the end it sounds like she keeps repeating "Bliss of another kind." At first I think she was saying "Peace of another kind," but you know how Tori sometimes stretches out her "i" sounds. I hope you have the opportunity to hear it asap, its great and it made my whole day. From DeliriumAugust 2, 1999 - Father, I killed my monkey, I From Allan CrossmanAugust 1, 1999 - Hmm, I hope you don't mind *another* person having a go at this... :) I've listened to it about 30 times doing this; I'm sure it's not that far wrong... Lately I'm into something ... [chorus x2] After that second chorus she sings take it take it, just like in Take To The Sky. It's part of what sounds like an improv, so it will probably not be in the lyric book and drive us nuts! [chorus out, repeating bliss, bliss at the end, a bliss of another kind] I'm sorry but I really can't figure out more! It sounds great, I love the band, there's a guitar wailing at the last note...but I don't get a meaning out of it yet. Gotta learn more about this song first :) From KsThViolet@aol.comJuly 31, 1999 - It is so good. It is very precussion oriented. Melodic and then it builds up the precussion and gets faster at the chorus. It is WONDERFUL!! I LOVE IT! The lyrics i read into it were the same as other peoples, except, this line "So maybe we're bees of another kind, of another time" I think she is saying. It is so wonderful. There is the hint of some air blown in the backround, giving it the feel of listening to it with the window open! SO GOOD! From Kelly M.July 31, 1999 - at exactly eleven am today i heard BLISS. i was driving home from work (i left early - if i had left on time i would have missed it!) when it came on live LIVE 105 KITS in San Franciso, CA. however, i live about an hour and a half from sf so the reception sucked and i coudn't pull over to concentrate on the lyrics because i was driving around trying to find better reception.well - here's my impression - very industrial like articles have indicated. lots of background layers. the best thing i can think of to describe is "siren"s dark, sullen, gothic cousin. ewf who like nin will like this album. OH MY GOD I ALMOST WET MYSELF RIGHT THERE IN THE CAR. (you have no idea how many traffic violations i committed to get home and tell you this) From Athena (Posted To The Dent Forum)July 31, 1999 - 94.7 KNRK in Portland, OR is also playing the new one now. They had just finished it when I got in my car at 4:10 pm yesterday (PHOOEY!) They are broadcast over the web and their DJs are a bit more hip than the ones on 107.5....for the 1998 tour, 94.7 is the station that interviewed Tori on the air, so I think they're more pro-Tori anyway. From katJuly 31, 1999 - I am the luckiest girl in the world to live in portland where 107.5 is playing "bliss" before it has been officially released Its so wonderful. The lyrics are really touching and to me are about her father and her relationship it starts out ....Father...you killed my monkey... and goes on to say ...what it means to be made of you but not enough for you... that lyric gives me chills its so touching i completly relate to that line ...you know its true I'm part you... aahhh i hope they start playing it everywhere so you all can hear it. disclaimer is that of course we haven't seen the official lyrics these are the lyrics that i can most make out with out help of the lyric book. just thought I would tell you about it. the song is very choirgirl but branched out and its a fast song with a good beat! I love when the first song comes out before the cds come out when you hear the song for hte first times only on the radio if your lucky to be listening at that time you get this feeling that is so unique. I taped it but i live out in the boon docks and the reception was really bad. but its slower than rasp swirl but faster than spark and also she uses an echo effect a little. its very upbeat but has those sad parts but then it like shes found bliss without him. I can't wait to ge the official lyrics. From Mary K ReesJuly 30, 1999 - My husband and I were going home from a doctor's appointment when the DJ said that they were minutes away from playing Tori's new song!!!! The radio station was 107.5 KBBT, The Beat in Portland, OR. The song will take a bit of getting used to, but I liked it a lot. You can definitely hear the piano in this song, though. Tori was a little difficult to understand, but the opening words were: "Father.... Killed my monkey...." I thought the song was really short. The DJs went on to talk about the song. They both liked it. One of them thought the music was a little busy and drowned out Tori's voice some what. They said it was definitely "a fan album" and if you really liked Tori's music or were just getting into her this would be the album to get, because of the live album part of it. They went on to say that Tori's live stuff is amazing and that she's "very deep". They said they were going to be replaying the song a lot over the weekend, so if you didn't hear all of it to stay tuned. From Summer SmithJuly 30, 1999 - I love your site, anyway, I thought I"d let you know that I just heard a new Tori song on the radio. 99X in Atlanta, GA just played it. It's the song "Bliss" I love it!! I do admit I was so excited, that I listened to it, but spazzing so much I didn't hear all the words. To me, it was nothing like the upbeat, dancy songs like some on choirgirl. It was soft, soothing to me. It was about 4 minutes long. There was one tempo change. It sounded more emotional. I have to hear it again to see if it reminded me of anything, and to be honest, it did a little, but I couldn't think of what. but it's one of the soothing tori songs. Sorry I couldn't say more, I was just sooo excited to hear it. From Myth (Posted to the Dent Forum)July 30, 1999 - I was in our warehouse at work looking for a staple gun. They play the radio LOUD back there [radio station 99X in Atlanta, GA], but there is also a paintbooth, many large fans, and a compressor gun going at the time. I'm hearing this voice and thinking......that sounds like Tori....but no, the new single isn't released yet. Then....well, maybe....I walk around a huge fan that's between me and the radio so I can hear better......and YES! It's her! I freeze, then haul ass at a flat sprint for the front of the buiding. My friend Amy works up front in the office with me is an EWF, and I knew she'd kick my ass if I wandered up and casually went, oh yeah, I just heard the new song. I fly in, switch on the radio on our desk, dial it to the right station, and....there! She and the other guy in our dept. were looking at me wide-eyed (they thought something bad happened) and I could only say (gasping for breath) "new Tori". About that time some other office-folk wandered in, and even tho they KNOW we love Tori, and KNEW we were listening to it, proceeded to ask questions about a print job in progress. After several seconds I asked "do you talk in church on Sundays?!?" they shut up. Approximately 45 seconds later it went off, and now it's like trying to recover a dream. I know it's there.....but what? I heard clearly about 1 1/2 minutes of what the dj said was 3 min, 31 seconds of Bliss. My ears will be pinned to the radio ALL weekend (I hate that station, but I will suffer for my cause) and will record it the first chance I get. If they do like they did with Spark they will play it a few times a day at least. They are bad about repeating themselves! ... Sorry I can't describe the actual song any better. Any opinions I offered at this point would be formed of vapour! From KiraJuly 30, 1999 - I came home on the 26th and my brother ran up to me saying that he'd heard Tori's new song on Grand Rapids, MI's 94.5 KLQ. At first I didn't think he was serious, because it's not supposed to play until the 6th, but now that I've seen these reports, I suppose it's been out longer. He's not a Tori fan, but he told me the name of the album and the name of the song too. I'll have to keep listening for my chance, now :) [Note From Mikewhy: Several Toriphiles have since called this station and they were told that did not have the new song yet...] |
