toriamos.com the 9,006th most popular site

(June 26, 2000) - Zac reports:

Hey, I found this interesting article at the SeemsLikeSalvation NIN News Site that I thought you might find interesting:

NIN.com The 3,595th Most Popular Site

PC Data Online tracks the web traffic for the most popular 10, 500 (or top one-third of a percent) of the some 300,000+ domain names currently registered in the US. Click here for the results for May 2000.

So anyway, I checked out the list and toriamos.com ended up at 9,006 which really isn't that bad. Just thought you might wanna know :)

Seventeen.com's Music Week column

(June 26, 2000) - Cherdy reports:

In this week's Seventeen.com's Music Week column, they have a detailed mention of the RAINN Online Auction:

    "...And So Does Tori:

Co-founded by Tori Amos, RAINN, the Rape & Incest National Network, is a non-profit organization that offers counseling and support to survivors of sexual abuse. And RAINN is holding quite a fundraiser over at Yahoo! Auctions. A massive selection of celeb gear is up for grabs on the site, including everything from an autographed Backstreet Boys comic book to a red leather jacket from Brandy's closet to a harmonica autographed by Alanis Morissette to a Tori Amos item described as "the baby grand piano that launched her career." Shania Twain, Marc Anthony, Smash Mouth, Sugar Ray, Lit, Kid Rock, Enrique Iglesias, Jewel, Garbage, Creed, Blink 182, Matchbox 20, Brian McKnight and many, many more folks have contributed personal items. The auction benefits RAINN and its national hotline, 1-800-656-HOPE. You've got 'til June 26 to check it out (at the Yahoo! Auction site), and even if you haven't got the cash to spend, the lovingly detailed essays about each of the items are a blast to read."

USA Weekend

(June 26, 2000) - Cherdy, Brandi Alice and Meredith report:

In the June 23-25, 2000 issue of USA Weekend, they have a small article on digital music (and it includes a small picture of Tori):

    "Find your favorite tunes- legally

While a host of Napster imitators has since sprung up, there are still plenty of ways to legal music online. Listen.com should be a first stop for anyone new to the technology. It walks newbies through downloading a player and songs, and site prides itself on linking only to legal tunes. The impressive roster mixes big names (Tori Amos, the Beastie Boys) with undiscovereds."

Alloy.com's Quiz section

(June 26, 2000) - Cherdy and Jacq Humes report:

In teen site Alloy.com's Quiz section, they have a quiz, titled "How Cool Are You" and one of the questions reads:

Of the following celebs, who do you most identify with?

    • Christina Aguilera.
    • Tom Green.
    • Puff Daddy.
    • Reese Witherspoon.
    • Mandy Moore.
    • Dave Holmes.
    • Janeane Garofalo
    • Tori Amos.
    • Gwyneth Paltrow.

Instinct Magazine

(June 26, 2000) - Hunter reports:

this is small, but unexpected and not particularly positive; but here is a small mention, if nonetheless invaluable, snipet of tori's name in the june 2000 issue of "instinct" magazine. Instinct magazine is a gay mag from the us, the editor is a fucking hilarious guy named ben rogers, who is totally not meant to take seriously.

anyway, since gaypride "carnivals" are happening in most major cities this summer, he has this article honored to pissing off random classes of homo's that attend (sp) ? these functions. One class that is targeted, of course are the lesbians. heres what it happens to say:

    LESBIANS

At times, the most irritable segment of the queers, Dykes tend to have the most pride, and the least sense of humor. This is especially true if they're also religious, "respectable," political activists. It appears that the most effective way to piss off our carpetmunching sisters is to dis their musical tastes. (While) Melissa Etheridge, K.D. Lang, Ani Difranco, Tori Amos, and Sarah Mclachlan Should be you main targets. Point out that Janis Joplin, Kate Bush, Patti Smith and Chrissie Hynde did earlier, and better. However, you might encounter that rare lesbian with good musical tastes, and who actually agrees that Melissa Etheridge should be hit over the head with her guitar. This is one person you shouldn't make fun of, and should instead invite her to the upcoming Liz Phair concert. As we all know, lesbians also like to drink and play pool, so if you can drink 'em under the table and at the same time woop their ass in pool, there's bound to be some dykey discontent.

    OTHER EFFECTIVE APPROACHES:
Tell them, "Oh, go make 72 cents to my dollar."; If she's butch, act more manly that her; If she's femme, act more girly than her; Tell them that all they really need is some good deep dicking; Play acoustic guitar better than them.

Official AFI website

(June 26, 2000) - vestan reports:

This isnt a huge deal, but i was checking out AFI's website (www.punkmusic.com/afi), and while looking at the measage board I came across someone that posted: "i was wondering if anyone besides me thinks that a tori amos and afi tour would be cool (not with AFI as an opener but as a co-headliner mind you......)"

If youve ever listened to AFI, youd think this is a pretty weird thing to say. The AFI fans replied a lot of mixed feelings on this subject (mostly negative). If you'd like to reply to this its on the "AFI oriented" board under "nightmare before x-mas & afi."

Lottery/Trivia Site iwin.com

(June 26, 2000) - Rebecca Dent reports:

I was surfing the net and I came across the lottery/trivia site iwin.com. In the trivia section, they have a music category. I came across two Tori questions. The first was "What is Tori Amos's real name?" The second was "In what year was Tori Amos born?" I was thrilled to see her there, especially with questions that only fans would really know! Just thought you'd all like to know.

Carole 2000 Lovescopes

(June 26, 2000) - NorthStag reports:

astronet.com has a horosope section titled carole 2000 lovescopes, which i believe can be reached by clicking on "all horoscopes." on June 25 she quotes a line from "Crucify."

Armand Van Heldon's review

(June 26, 2000) - Playboy Honey reports:

I found this review of Armand Van Heldon's new CD, at the Wall of Sound Website.

They make a small but positive reference to Tori, and I thought you would like to see it.

    Here is the review:

    Armand Van Helden
    Killing Puritans
    Label: Armed Records
    Genre: Techno, Electronica
File Under: Just what the Witch Doktor ordered
    Rating: 82

Every year, dance music splinters into further subgenres, such as house, techno, big beat, and speed garage. But like a demanding restaurant patron who refuses to accept the "no substitutions" line in the menu, Armand Van Helden ignores such distinctions, mixing flavors willy-nilly in pursuit of what he wants. Since 1994, when his bone-shaking, tribal-techno "Witch Doktor" brought him to prominence, the New York producer and DJ has cross-pollinated grooves to yield hits like the twisted disco of "You Don't Know Me" and the U.K. overhaul of Tori Amos' "Professional Widow," both hearty hybrids with impressive shelf lives.

Addressing those who prefer their music slotted into neat little categories, Van Helden spells out his raison d'Õtre at the outset of Killing Puritans: to strike a blow against narrow-minded zealots "who try to push one type of thinking on heads who don't even want to feel it." The confrontational tone of Van Helden's spoken intro permeates the entire album, a pervasive sense of menace that only heightens the excitement. His intentional emphasis on leaving greasy fingerprints Û excess surface noise and distortion that will surely leave some listeners thinking they've blown a speaker Û all over the production compounds the thrills, too.

Van Helden's compositional modus operandi doesn't vary much between the 11 tracks, but it's a combination that rarely fails to deliver a knockout punch. He introduces one element Û a vocal snippet or a jazzy drum break Û and milks it for a spell, before introducing a contrasting timbre. The two begin to climb in and around each other, as Van Helden tweaks and twists various effects, bringing the music and momentum to a dizzy, unsettling pitch.

A formula this simple and slapdash lives and dies by the strength of the individual musical cells, and Van Helden hones each tiny hook into a vicious steel claw. "Little Black Spiders" pits Fiona Marr's spooky, detached vocal against a searing guitar loop lifted from the Scorpions' "Bad Boys Running Wild," all of it anchored by a plodding beat like some giant approaching robot. "Koochy" scratches a sample from Gary Numan's "Cars" into donuts and figure eights, then splices in a computer-voice booty rap that answers the musical question: What if Afrika Bambaataa hosted a phone-sex line?

Reinforcing the album's overall concept, Killing Puritans also features a surprising amount Û for a dance record, anyway Û of political content. Common's flowing rap atop the funky "Full Moon" is essentially "It's a Small World" updated for 24-hour party people. And "Watch Your Back" starts off with a calypso-tinged rallying cry to the "poor people" of the ghetto to rise up, before unfolding into a frenzy of chaotic, kitchen-sink house › la Basement Jaxx.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter where you file Killing Puritans in your music collection. All your other CDs will be scared of it, regardless. -- Kurt B. Reighley.

Ridiculous "Pop Quiz" at MSN.com

(June 22, 2000) - Tracy Yen, Upside Down Girl, Maberly, and Michael Histen report:

The Experience Music Project in Seattle

(June 22, 2000) - Mikewhy and Shaman report:

The Experience Music Project is a new, interactive music museum located in Seattle, WA. It's grand opening will be June 23-25, 2000. The Experience Music Project web site says EMP is "a one-of-a-kind music museum combining interactive and interpretive exhibits to tell the story of the creative, innovative and rebellious expression that defines American popular music. Featuring a world-class collection of artifacts, unique architecture by Frank O. Gehry, state-of-the-art technology, exciting interactive presentations, and a dynamic ride-like attraction, EMP will encourage visitors of all ages and backgrounds to experience the power and joy of music in its many forms....EMP is dedicated to capturing and reflecting the essence of rock 'n' roll, from its roots in jazz, soul, gospel, country and the blues, to its influence on hip hop, punk and other more recent genres. EMP invites visitors to participate in a total sensory experience: see rare artifacts and memorabilia, hear musicians tell their stories, or play an instrument and create your own music." It sounds like a cool place, and Tori does have a small place in this museum. Toriphile Shaman was able to attend the pre-opening gala for the EMP and reports the following:

I couldn't help but smile when I saw Tori Amos was one of the selected musicians who appears in the Sky Church display. Across the top of this room is a rotating display of a couple of a dozen musicians. She appears on the far right in a black and white picture. She's also part of the SoundLab. I only had limited time but I ran across her song Cornflake Girl as a song that you can try to play along with. You can play just the left hand or the right hand ot both and you can slow down the speed.

MP3 of the day at Rolling Stone

(June 22, 2000) - Jeff Kleismit and Shaigirl report:

I just received [June 21, 2000] my latest Rolling Stone daily e-mail newsletter, and near the end they always list an MP3-of-the-Day. (Actually the section is called MP3 and More and they appear to be offering a streaming version of the song.) Today's selection was "Bliss"! Yeah! All they say is, "from the singer/songwriter's double-CD collection," and they provide this link.

Celebrity Astrology

(June 22, 2000) - Meredith reports:

While I was browsing around Yahoo, I came across an astrology section which also happened to feature something called "Celebrity Astrology". Under the female choices there was our Tori! Here is the link.

Unbelievable Truth

(June 22, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

On June 16, 2000, the Live Daily web site posted an article on the U.K. group Unbelievable Truth and the fact that they are releasing a new album called "Sorrythankyou." You can read the entire article on that web site, but Tori is mentioned. As you know, Unbelievable Truth opened for some of Tori's dates during her 98 Plugged tour. Here is the part of the article that mentions Tori:

Although they have a strong British fan base, they have yet to break the States.

"We did a very long tour with Tori Amos in the States, but Virgin didn't do much to promote 'Almost Here,' said Powell. "We only sold about nine albums while we were on tour. But, thanks to our website and word-of-mouth over the Internet, we're getting a lot more fans from the U.S."

FDA Consumer: The Magazine of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration

(June 21, 2000) - Allison Palmer reports:

Tori is mentioned in the May-June 2000 issue of FDA Consumer: The Magazine of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration! :v)

In an article about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, a woman named Kellie Greene discusses her ordeal with PTSD after being raped.

"In light of the healing effects of PTSD treatment in her own life, rape survivor and rookie sky diver Greene has committed herself to encouraging others to take brave steps to deal with their traumatic memories. Greene says she has been inspired by popular singer Tori Amos, a rape victim herself and co-founder of the trauma support orgamization RAINN (the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network). Amos, who says she wrote her song "Me and a Gun" as a healing step for herself, wrote a public letter to others who have faced similar traumas. The message: 'Healing takes courage, and we all have courage, even if we have to dig a little to find it!'"

"100 Sexiest Women In The World Ever" Poll

(June 21, 2000) - Mike Gray reports:

Just to let you know that FHM (U.K. 'lad' magazine in the same vein as Maxim) runs a "100 Sexiest Women In The World Ever" poll every year, and this year they did a similar poll where *women* voted for the hundred sexiest women - and Tori came in at number 99. [I think this was in the July 2000 issue.]

Jenny Jones

(June 21, 2000) - Ashley reports:

on June 19, 2000 on a Jenny Jones episode called "I hate my mate's weight" there was a man complaining about his wife's weight and Jenny asked him how he would like her to look and she said like Tori Amos, so he said yeah I have a crush on Tori Amos. Just another Tori mentioning, even though I think it was a rerun and you've probby already heard it.

"Illegal Faerie" a Super Member Site at Tripod

(June 17, 2000) - Mark H Weidman reports:

I use Tripod to make homepages, and whenever you log in, you go the main menu which has a section that tells who is being featured in the Super Member Site right now. Anyway, I have never seen a Tori Amos site featured in there until now. Here is the quote:

    MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
    Illegal Faerie

High-school student by day, corporate-site designer by night, Dan has built a Tori Amos shrine that would make the singer proud. Read more...

I just thought that was cool.

Here is the URL/address Illegal Faerie.

and the Super Member Sites for Tripod web page.

Willy Porter Web Site

(June 15, 2000) - Shaigirl reports:

Found an interesting Tori sighting tidbit... while searching for some information on my favorite band, Marry Me Jane, I found myself on the official Willy Porter site. I was trying to figure out who the hell Willy Porter was, because the name sounded familar. So I checked out the All Music Guide and it said he was a guitarist for Tori Amos's For the Choirgirl Hotel (which explains why the name rang a bell). [He also opened for Tori during much of the 1996 Dew Drop Inn tour.] So I was browsing his official site and he has a Tori quote posted as feedback!

"Willy plays rhythms that make me want to crawl into his guitar."
    -Tori Amos

Splish Splash Water Park

(June 15, 2000) - ToriPyro reports:

I went to Splish Splash Water Park in Riverhead, NY (on Long Island), and they played "1,000 Oceans" while my friends and I were waiting online....this was Sunday, June 11, 2000. They usually play really crappy music that you never notice, so I was THRILLED to hear tori !

HBO series "Tracey Takes On..."

(June 13, 2000) - Ryan Smith reports:

I was watching the HBO series "Tracey Takes On..." starring Tracey Ullman. I don't know if you've seen it, but basically she dresses up as a bunch of different characters and does small skits with each character related to the show's daily theme. Today's theme [June 13, 2000] was Music, and one of the characters she played was Erin, a Janis Joplin-like 70s music star who was going to reunite with her old bandmates and play a concert.

It turns out that the "Erin" character was still a stoner, and her bandmates had sobered up. After 5 minutes they were reliving the bad times, and Erin got upset because she thought she was a nobody. Then her friends tried convincing her that she was a legend and an idol, and that's when one of the actresses said, "Yeah, Tori Amos even mentioned you in the liner notes of her last CD."

So, I know that was a long-winded explanation, but still pretty cool I thought :)

May 2000 Teen People Book Club Catalog

(June 13, 2000) - Cherdy reports:

I was suprised to find this Tori mention in my May 2000 Teen People Book Club Catalog (this is a summary of the book Making Faces, by Kevyn Aucoin):

"You look at high school pictures of Tori Amos, and she looks like, well, a regular person. You look at pictures of her today, and she looks like an Earth Goddess- all thanks to Kevyn Aucoin, makeup artist extraordinaire."

Even though I have to disagree with this statement, because, I've seen pictures of Tori in high school, and I thought she was always pretty.

Ana Voog And Feminism

(June 12, 2000) - Mikewhy reports:

Ana Voog mentioned Tori in her mailing list on June 12, 2000. (For details on Ana and how she and Tori are related, check this page.) You need to read the entire entry to get the full context. (click the link and do a search on Amos.) However, here is the part that mentions Tori:

now if a WOMAN shows how angry she is at men...then she is a feminazi and she's crazy
but if a GUY does it then that' s ok...and it is raved by critics and he's given a grammy for being so honest and telling it like it is but if a woman does it...it's not marketable...and she is shut right up and not even allowed the decency of having her pain validated and real....
and she is stuck over into the "hysterical women's section" of the music rack.
so even TORI AMOS won't say she is a feminist because she doesn't want to seem unfair to men!
but being a feminist doesn't mean u are hating masculinity..it means that u are ALSO pro feminism...but we aren't allowed to revel in our feminism and celebrate it because to do so would be to put men down as not being important to?? where does it say that?
and if we revel in our sexuality we are whores and if we don't we are repressed?
i am not insane. i am not asking to be hurt because i "shine" with joy and if i don't shine with joy then i am not coping correctly

Kathie Lee Gifford

(June 9, 2000) - Ciccone4 reports:

On page 90 of the June 16, 2000 issue of "Entertainment Weekly", in the music section, is an article called "What I'm Listening To" and EW asks a random celebrity what they listen to as music. This week it's Kathie Lee Gifford. Tori is mentioned in the following paragraph:

"For a person who's supposed to be perky, I don't like superficial music, " claimes the seriously perky Kathie Lee Gifford. Reege's soon-to-be-ex-cohost cut her teeth covering Carole King and James Tylor and now appreciates Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan.

The article does not mention Tori as one of Kathie Lee's picks, however.

"Mr. Zebra" performed by Indie group Fuzzy Daupner

(June 8, 2000) - Ciccone4 reports:

On Sunday, June 4th, 2000, I saw a group called Fuzzy Daupner perform in Madison, New Jersey. I am friends with it's two band-members, Carrie Engdahl and Rob DiCaterino. For their third set, they did a very interesting rendition of "Mr. Zebra". It was different from the original in several ways, including the use of guitar instead of piano. Carrie is a major Tori fan and the first Carrie bootleg "Folk space rock" features Carrie performing "Glory of the 80's" and "Honey".

    Fuzzy has an official website.

Tori Amos and Mary Magdalene

(June 7, 2000) - Charles Masson reports:

I was alerted to magdalene.org, a web site dedicated to Mary Magdalene. It includes a Tori section which includes many of the quotes Tori has made about the Magdalene. Quite interesting!

June 2000 Issue Of Jump

(June 7, 2000) - Cherdy reports:

In this month's issue (June 2000) of Jump, a teen girls' magazine, they have a sort of motivational list, which contains some of their reasons why being single is cool. Number Six reads:

"Life is all about making choices that make you happy, says John Gray. When you're part of a we, you can forget about me, since you're constantly compromising in order to make someone else happy. The big bonus to being on your own is that you call the shots. So if you'd rather chill on the couch listening to Tori Amos instead of Kid Rock or watch Tom Cruise strike a pose on the silver screen instead of Jackie Chan, you can!"

Belle and Sebastian Web Site

(June 7, 2000) - Ryan Miller reports:

I was checking out the Belle and Sebastian site (they're coming out with a new album Tuesday, June 6, 2000), and I was looking around, and right on the site was a top 10 list of Tori quotes.... Here's the content:

    Top Ten Tori Amos Quotes
    (Gwen McGinty, Glasgow)

    1. "I'm a musician first, a food-lover second, a dirty mouth with feet, and a girl last time I checked."
    2. "I have my own parties. They involve being barefoot with a piece of fried chicken and a margarita in each hand."
    3. "I know that mess spelled backwards is ssem and I felt much better armed with that information."
    4. "Each song has a little soul, a little persona, it's own little birth certificate and favourite shoe shops."
    5. "I'm a tomato freak, but sometimes you have to get it in ketchup form for people to be able to open to tomatoes."
    6. "I have a tool box. You get inspiration, but you have to be a good tracker. Where did the wildebeest go? Sometimes I think I'm just a good hunting dog, y'know?"
    7. "'Orchards are simple.' a peach tree says. 'Some of me will be juicy and some of me will be dry. I'm not growing for you, I'm growing because that's what I do.' You always hear people complaining about how dry their peach is, and the peach says 'It's not my fault you don't know the proper usage of dry peaches.'"
    8. "When I am in geometrically sound shoes, I feel like I'm part of the physics chatter."
    9. "They're a ruthless lot, these songs. One thinks she's made the final cut, but then they spray-paint her dress before she walks down the catwalk, and she isn't allowed to go out."
    10. "I am garlic personified. Garlic and extra virgin olive oil. Garlic is garlic. You don't want it in ice cream, but you definitely want it when there are vampires around."

RENT Coffee Table Book

(June 7, 2000) - Laura Heywood reports:

For my birthday I received the RENT coffee table book (photos and stories as well as the full libretto from the Broadway musical "RENT" by Jonathan Larson). On page 132 some of the actors are quoted regarding celebrity visits backstage that really meant a lot to them. Gilles Chiasson, the actor who originated the roles of "Steve, Man with a Squeegee, A Waiter and Others" is quoted as saying, "I was thrilled when Tori Amos came, because I think she's a goddess. I went over to her, and she just opened her arms and held me." I was extremely excited to find this quote, not only because it combines two of *my* biggest musical inspirations, but because it really reflects Tori's kindness and her passion for AIDS and AIDS-related issues.

"Lessons of War"

(June 7, 2000) - Reece reports:

I have a weird Tori sighting addition for your page. I just got done watching this video for my history class. It's a video of a play called "Lessons of War" and was written, directed and starring a man named Fred Leo Brown who is a Vietnam war vet. In the middle of one of his monlogues in a scene where he is commanding troops during the war, "Winter" started playing! It played through the rest of the monologue. It was definitely a shock, and quite an odd Tori sighting. The play was travelling the country in 1997 and is long since stopped (as it was, um, not real good, to say the least!) But nonetheless, it was Tori!

Yahoo! Broadcast With BT

(June 7, 2000) - Tim (Star Tat) reports:

At Yahoo (broadcast.com) there is an interview with remixer/producer BT about his new album. It mentions Tori several times (pop icon, her collaboration with BT, he helping mix Talula for the Twister soundtrack, etc.). Pretty interesting thought youd like to know.

Mojo Magazine

(June 7, 2000) - Danny reports:

in the may 2000 issue of mojo magazine with iggy pop on the cover, on page 24, there is an article on bob masse. there is a picture of one of his tori posters, advertsing the may 13, 1996 show at madison sqaure gardens. The caption reads: Tori Amos (above) sits happily next to Dead and Airplane Masse classics. Tori's name is not mentioned in the article though

MTV Real World

(June 7, 2000) - Danny reports:

mtv is showing real world rereuns all weekend because the new season starts tuesday... anyways, on two episodes shown on monday morning [June 5, 2000] they played tori songs... the shows were from the san fransisco season... the first show was shown at 2 am pacific time- the episode was mainly about pedro visiting his family in miami... but they had one scene where pam and casey, i think her name was, are talking and they played the beginning of winter over and over and then at the end, they played "when you gonna make up your mind." the second show was shown at 2:30 am and was about chosing a new roommate after puck... they played the beginning of cornflake girl when they were coming in from a commercial and showing just the house...

Amy Jo Johnson Mentions Tori On Rosie O'Donnell

(June 3, 2000) - Loreen and Cherdy report:

Amy Jo Johnson [from Felicity] was on the Rosie O'Donnell Show today [Wednesday, May 31, 2000]....Rosie asker her who she looked up to musically and she said Tori Amos and a few others, but she said Tori first!...

Tori Sighting At jonimitchell.com

(June 3, 2000) - Ciccone4 reports:

Not sure how many are aware of this, but over at http://www.jonimitchell.com there is a short mention of Tori on the second introduction page. It is as follows:

"Singer-songwriters as different as Tori Amos, Seal, Annie Lennox and Prince cite Joni as an influence; Other respected artists such as Sarah Mclachlan and Shawn Colvin have also been inspired by her music. Even Madonna said recently that the album "COURT & SPARK" was a favorite of hers while in high school. These musicians acknowledge a great debt to Joni. There would certainly be fewer avenues for their talents today if Joni hadn't helped keep the doors open at clubs and halls during the 1960's and 70's by giving emotionally moving concerts to ever expanding audiences."

As we all know, Tori has covered Joni's "A Case Of You" and ... "River".

'Lost Daughters'

(June 3, 2000) - Kim Henderson reports:

i am reading this book called 'lost daughters' written by laurie alberts and was quite surprised when tori was mentioned (on page 177)

    here is the paragraph:

'i've got the radio tuned to a santa fe rock station which loses its static as i turn onto rte. 44 and head southeast, my fingers numb on the steering wheel. THEY PLAY TORI AMOS' COVER OF SPRINGSTEEN'S 'I'M ON FIRE', HER VOICE RAGGED WITH LUST. IS HER VERSION MEANT TO BE GAY? erotic longing seems so foreign to me right now, an emotion belonging to aliens. but I CAN RELATE TO THE YEARNING.'

The Movie "28 Days"

(June 3, 2000) - Heather reports:

Just wanted to let you know that I was at the movie "28 Days" over the weekend (w/Sandra Bullock) and there was a scene where she was in a club... only about 30 seconds, but the background music was "Raspberry Swirl"! yay =)

Tori On The Bitch List

(June 3, 2000) - Kavita reports:

In the magazine, "Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture", issue # 11, January 2000, Tori is mentioned in the "Bitch List" on pg.56:

"Amos, Tori (before she got her band). The fire-haired, fairy-loving space cadet who possesses the most lovely voice, ranging from a breathy whisper to a banshee wail, accompanied by an incredible musical talent most eloquently displayed on her third solo album Boys for Pele. Listen and weep."

Quite a nice mention, although most EWF would agree, she's just as amazing after she got her band as she was before.

Two Mentions In The July 2000 Spin Magazine

(May 31, 2000) - Ears With Feet e.liz.a.beth., Tracy Streimish and teleute report:

In the July 2000 issue of SPIN magazine (with Matchbox Twenty on the cover) are two small Tori mentions:

In a review of Armand Van Helden's newest release, Killing Puritans, is this: "...and he scratched the mainstream in 1996 with two of the decade's best pop remixes: Tori Amos' "Professional Widow" and Sneaker Pimps' "Spin Spin Sugar." "

And then, a few pages later, in Charles Aaron's Singles column are the No-More-Too-Late Farewell Singles Awards: 1993-2000.

Single Innocuously Reviewed Here That Spawned an Entire U.K. Subculture Nobody in the U.S. Understands: Armand Van Helden's remix of Tori Amos' "Professional Widow" (subculture: "speed garage")

The intro paragraph I will include to give you a sense of what this column is about.

In the grungerrific early 90's, when this column was first foisted on the shaggy Spin bedhead, the idea of reviewing Fat Joe Da Gangsta's "Flow Joe," Hardfloor's "Acperience," Terence Trent D'Arby's Let Her Down Easy," and the 3D's "Beautiful Things" in the same column (January 1994) seemed like a useful/colorful shading of the alt-rocky landscape. And it still does, even in a rock-challenged era of piously eclectic DJ snobs who boast secret knowledge of every subgenre's nick and scratch. I still love hearing cool, weird singles at home (or wherever) and dancing to cool, weird singles in clubs (or wherever), but this space just ain't the place I feel like talking about all that anymore. So it's time to kick a hole in the speaker, pull the plug, and get down to some serious bitching all the Jets for trading Keyshawn. But before we proceed to the next level, here, for your consideration and/or ridicule, the No-More-Too-Late Farewell Singles Awards: 1993 - 2000.

Here is the first single he mentioned (Tori's was the second). I am adding it because I think it is funny. And gives more of an explanation of what the categories are about.

Best Singles Never Reviewed Here Because I Was Desperately Intimidated by the Singer's Positive Body Image: D'Angelo's "Brown Sugar" and Ginuwine's "Pony."
