Tori Amos To Be Honored By Rape Support Group
(8/7/03, 12 p.m. ET) -- The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network's (RAINN) president, Scott Berkowitz, is asking fans of Tori Amos to donate money to the organization in recognition of the singer's upcoming birthday. Amos, a founding member of RAINN, turns 40 years old on August 22, and those who contribute $5 or more to the network will have their name printed on a birthday card which will be sent to the singer. Berkowitz writes, "I hope you will join me in this tribute to Tori. I can't think of anything that would make for a better present."
Amos recounts her own rape experience in the song "Me And A Gun." She tells LAUNCH she encounters women on a daily basis who are victims of abuse, and she wishes she could help them all out. "There are young women who will come back to me and say 'I really don't want to go home tonight. Can I come on the bus with you?" Amos says. "And I'll say, 'Why don't you want to go home tonight?' One in particular young woman said to me, 'Because I have to go home to my stepfather. And he raped me last night, he'll rape me tomorrow night, and he'll rape me tonight. And I have nowhere to go.'"
RAINN is the nation's largest anti-sexual assault organization. More than 10,000 calls a month are screened by the organization's staff.
