Read about V-Day, a global movement to end violence against women and girls, and how they plan to focus on Juarez, Mexico, where over 300 women and girls have been killed or disappeared during the last decade. Most of you know of Tori's song Juarez from the To Venus And Back album. Thanks to Sam (Prince Adam) for pointing this out to me.

More Details

A recent issue (Summer 2003) of The Hollywood Reporter includes an ad for a new campaign that's being started by an organization called V-DAY. Their goal is to stop the violence against woman in Juarez, Mexico. This seems rather Tori-relevant, so I included it on The Dent. The ad states:

"In the past decade, over 300 women and girls have been killed or disappeared in Juarez, immediately across the border from El Paso, Texas. Many of the victims were raped, mutilated and tortured. One of the victims was a six year old girl. Despite the fact that these murders have persisted over the past decade, there has not been significant progress in providing protection to the women of Juarez or in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

V-Day, the global movement to end violence against women and girls, and Amnesty International USA urge you to join us in our efforts, along with the many international organizations and fellow industry names listed here, to put a spotlight on the missing and murdered young women in Juarez, Mexico.

The situation is dire for women in Juarez who already struggle under great adversity working in globalized factories, mainly American owned, and with exports to the US, for as little as $4 a day. They are bused to distant places where they live in desperate living conditions. Not only do they have live with poor wages in poor conditions, but their security is compromised as well.

For its 2004 benefit season and awareness campaign, V-Day will make Juarez it's spotlight placing the issue in front of thousands of people in the US and around the world."

Be sure to check out the V-Day web site at vday.org, which is very informative about the different projects V-Day is involved in around the world, not just in Juarez.
