More Details

'Winter" played on CNN during footage of the war with Iraq

Jade tells me that on March 24, 2003, CNN in the U.S. played a snippet of 'Winter,'
totally instrumental, during the closing credits of their late night coverage of the war with Iraq.

'Scarlet's Walk' heard on the ABC soap "One Life To Live"

The song Scarlet's Walk was heard during the April 3, 2003 episode of the ABC soap "One Life To Live". Thanks to Theresa and e m for telling me.

Tori and the Rocky Mountain Colorguard Association

The following sighting comes from Maysa blu Mckown:

This is Maysa blu Mckown, i'm a Toriphile AND a colorguard instructor here
in Colorado Springs, CO. I just wanted you to know that for my Winterguard
show this season, we preformed to tori's "Another Girl's Paradise". If you
recall, there was another guard in 1999 who preformed to "Jackie's Strength"
and won 1st place at the National Competion.

Unfortunately we never placed more than 2nd to last, but it we had fun
doing it!! I was happy my team of 7 FINALLY let me choreograph the show to
tori! The school's name is Pine Creek High School here in Colorado Springs,
CO and we competed in the Rocky Mountain Colorguard Association.

Tori mentioned in the book "The G.R.I.T.S. (Girls Raised In The South) Guide to Life" by Deborah Ford.

Rose tells me that Tori is mentioned in the book "The G.R.I.T.S. (Girls Raised In The South) Guide to Life" by Deborah Ford. Tori is listed among the Southern women who make us proud:
"Beauty and talent have always been bankable qualities for the Southern woman, even before Tallulah Bankhead took her dance act to Paris's Left Bank in the 1920s. Present-day stars like Kim Basinger, Tori Amos, Julia Roberts, Brandy, Cybill Shepherd, Sandra Bullock, Courtney Cox Arquette, Faith Hill, and Reese Witherspoon illustrate the breadth of success Grits have had in modeling, movies, theater and music." (p. 232-233).

Tori reference located at explodingdog.com

Christian Hurley tells me that there is an illustration at explodingdog.com that has a Tori reference. It uses a line from Cornflake Girl.

Jane Forman tells me that you can find another one for the lyric, "the only way out is to go so far in" here. Jane tells me that the way the site works is that people send this guy quotes and phrases and he draws them. So there are obviously some other Toriphiles who patronize the site.

Adrian Brody on the Late Late Show With Craig Kilborne

This sighting comes from Denessa Elaine:
I flipped the TV on and saw a clip of Tori's video "a sorta fairytale". Adrian Brody was on the late late show with craig kilborne[b] on [b]friday night, march 28, 2003. Craig K was asking Adrian about doing something that strange and what if someone noticed him from that video and not his movie. Adrian said he liked doing something different like that video and liked working with Tori. He really raved about the director and I cannot spell his name. Personally, I first recognized him at the oscars as the "guy from Tori's video" but he said no one had said that to him. He might have talked more about it, but Craig changed the subject.

The WB TV show 'Black Sash'

shawn.the.little.masochist tells me that they played much of a sorta fairytale on a new TV show in the WB network called Black Sash on Sunday, April 6, 2003. shawn says, "They played almost the entire "A Sorta Fairytale" while 2 people were riding motorcycles. They cut some of the last verse so the end of the song would come when the girl rode off, leaving the guy alone." Thanks also to John Doe for telling me about it.

The band First of June

Mr. Zee sent me the following:
After reading the post about the band Evanescence, I was reminded of a really cool band I found a while ago, called First of June. There's a bunch of reviews on their site at firstofjune.com hinting at Tori influences. For example:
"The overall sound has echoes of "Little Amsterdam" from Tori Amos's Boys for Pele era, like Tori Amos with a lively acoustic band, but that seems like all too easy a comparison, because this group is so talented there's more going on here than that. This is a rich sound that this band could mine for a long time--I find it compelling listening. I like the quality of the songwriting a lot (lots of intriguing and allusive lyrics, and songs that can encompass shifts in mood) and how they put their sound together--the piano dominates and the quality of Vanessa Laurin's playing stands up to close listening. Her slightly smoky voice angles around the melodies, feeling more like a part of the mix of the tunes rather that riding them as Tori's does."

Ben Folds mentions Tori onstage

messica (da plastik glam grrl) tells me that she saw Ben Folds in concert at WPI in Worcester, MA on April 12, 2003. Ben folds was complaining about the piano bench that he was given. He said how he likes to sit on smaller stools so he can sit like this (then he made his weird half standing/sitting postion in the air). He said 'this is the way Tori does it, Tori Amos sits kinda like this, and anything that Tori does is okay for me' and then after a quiet hesitation he jokingly added, 'well... almost anything'.

MTV's "True Life"

HaleyFaerie send this to The Dent:
Was watching MTV's "True Life" series tonight, Monday, April 14, 2003 (10:00pm MTN) and they played the musical score to "a sorta fairytale" behind a scene of one of the soldiers taking care of his sick baby. Here is a listing from tvguide.com of other upcoming showings:

      True Life
      "I'm Shipping Out"
      60 min.
Young soldiers preparing for the war in Iraq are profiled.

Additional Airings (I think the times are mountain time, but I am not sure!):
      Wednesday, April 16 - 4:00PM
      Thursday, April 17 - 9:30AM
      Saturday, April 19 - 4:30PM
      Sunday, April 20 - 5:00AM

Jeff Kleismit also tells me there was a (minor) Tori sighting on MTV's "True Life: I Have an Eating Disorder," which aired at 10:00 PM on April 3, 2003. During the first segment of the story, as a young woman was telling about preparing her breakfaat and preparing to purge her meal, the instrumental intro to "Spark" was played in the background.

Tori's version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" used in "A Clockwork Orange"

Jennifer reports:
Just Off Broadway, a theater located in Kansas City, is currently running "A Clockwork Orange" as directed by Christoper King with Mind's Eye Theater company performing.

A snip of a review of the play in a local KC paper, "Pitch Weekly":

"The play begins with the entire cast in a production number set to Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - but Tori Amos' torchy version, in which the "entertain us" refrain is more seductive than demanding."

Jon Farriss (The drummer for INXS) and Petra

Sylvain sent me the following paragraph, which comes from Jon Farriss' diary in the "band" section of inxs.com:
"Musically, I've been doing bits and pieces but mainly I've just been concentrating on some songwriting with a girl from Melbourne and Richard Clapton. But it's all archival and is being put down for future use. Her name is Petronella but we call her Petra. She has a great voice and was trained at the Conservatorium of Music in Melbourne. I've known her for a year or so, and we've got a few tracks written - I'm trying to help guide her career a bit. She's a little like Tori Amos and Kate Bush but has a unique voice. She's got great lyrics and a head on her shoulders - she's quite quirky and clever with her musical choices. I'd just like to see us working together somehow, either with her as a guest on some of my material or with me producing and co-writing for her own album."

Ruben Studdard, American Idol Finalist

You can find an interview with American Idol contestant Ruben Studdard at idolonfox.com. One of the questions asks, "What album would your friends be surprised you own?" He replies, "Tori Amos". Thanks to Jennifer Scalf for being the first to send that to The Dent.
