We know that a DVD single for a sorta fairytale was released on April 8, 2003 in the U.S. and on April 29, 2003 in Canada. The original packaging was in a tall yellow plastic DVD case. On July 1, 2003, Epic released this DVD video single again (at least in the U.S.), but in different packaging. The new packaging is a standard CD-sized jewel case. The overall artwork and DVD content is exactly the same, just the way it is packaged is different. The new release is a few dollars cheaper than the older one. Amazon.com currently has listings for both the older version of this single (which is now called a "Special Edition DVD single) and the newer version which they call a DVD Single/Jewelbox. I have scans of the new packaging sent by Danny (cruelEWF78), as well as full details about this DVD single. More DetailsJuly 10, 2003 Update: Epic released the Jewelbox version of this DVD single on July 1, 2003. Thanks to Tristan & Jeremy, Douglas and Hunter who first told me about it. Danny (cruelEWF78) sent me scans of the new jewelbox packaging, which you can see below. Click to see the scans larger: A news item posted to Toriamos.com says the following about this DVD, "Tori's breakthrough "a sorta fairytale" video featuring Academy Award Winner, Adrien Brody (The Pianist), and directed by Sanji (Maxwell, Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige) will arrive in stores on April 8, 2003! This will be Tori's first commercial DVD that will also feature a Biography and Making Of The Video footage!" John Bonebrake ordered the a sorta fairytale DVD from Amazon.com and received it on April 3, despite the fact that the official release date was April 8, 2003. John sent me some scans of the DVD (in the original Special Edition packaging) that you can see below. John Bonebrake also sends this description of the asf DVD:
1. the video - gorgeous high quality...its nice to see it without the name misprints and all that...(and of course i can watch it till i burst) lol 2. making of the video- this is really interesting...it pretty much goes through the basics of the video...how its was shot....the visual effects team....all with snippets of tori and sanji telling about the video...(tori is so cute filming the shots..and "yes we're in the gutter, and that IS pigeon poop!) lol 3. biography- just your standard "actors biography" on a dvd....tells about the album and about tori...havent read it all yet...i was too excited about the making of the video! lol 4. Interview with Tori- this is a great interview...some of the clips are the same as on the making of the video but then there are some that werent previously shown...(a really really cute story about tori and tash at the beach burying daddy in the sand because he has what it takes to bulid the best castles, it was their fairytale) lol the case i got with it is yellow..and there was no insert on the inside of the case...just the cd...the menus on the dvd are cute...kinda like the "limited edition dvd" but without the pictures...i am really happy with amazon.com (which i went through the dent to help support! lol) it was shipped yesterday from somewhere in kentucky and i got it today....it was def. worth paying the extra 10$ for next day delivery...lol Michael Eugene Adams sent me the following screen grabs of the Main Menu and Bonus Features Menu on the DVD: Here are some general details about the a sorta fairytale DVD from Craig:

If you do so using this link, you will help support The Dent! It looks like this DVD single will be released later in Canada. According to Canadian based hmv.com, the release date is Tuesday, April 29, 2003. (Thanks pagoda.) However, several Canadian Toriphiles have written to me saying that they ordered the DVD single from Amazon.ca and received it shortly after April 8th! On March 26, 2003, there was a small blurb posted to VirginMegaMagazine.com about this DVD single. I include that below. (Thanks Richard Handal.) Tori Amos and Adrien Brody? Tori Amos's first attempt at putting out a DVD sounds a bit odd, but hey, it's Tori Amos. The little DVD mini drama, out Apr 8, is built around the eccentric pianist/singer/songwriter's last single, ?Sorta Fairytale,? from her 2002 concept album, Scarlet's Walk . It not only features Amos, but also recent Academy Award winning actor Adrien Brody ( The Pianist ). The DVD, out Apr 8, was directed by Sanji (Maxwell, Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige). In Tori fashion, the drama, which is equal parts sweet and surreal, depicts the pairing of two souls who, without each other, are less than complete. It opens with a shot of a foot wearing heels, tapping along to the beat of the song on a city walk. A moment later you see a single hand "hopping" towards the foot. As Tori's vocals begin, the shot pans up where it is revealed that the foot and shin are attached to only Tori's head. Across from her is Adrien, his head attached only to an arm and hand. The unusual "couple" comes together tenderly, then abruptly breaks apart, only to reunite on a sandy beach in the end. This is Tori's first commercial DVD, which also includes a biography and making of the video footage. dan the kitti man sends me this review of the DVD:
Reviewer: dankitti from Princeton, NJ USA The video for Tori's song A Sorta Fairytale is a surreal fantasy piece co-starring Adrien Brody, apropriately of of The Pianist fame. The idea is that the two of them are "incomplete" people who find each other, kiss, and become Whole, and that is sorta like a fairytale. You will understand if you see it. The Making Of and Interview featurettes are worthwhile for Tori fans, or Ears With Feet. Interestingly, Tori herself is Ears With Foot to Adrien's Easrs With Hand. A worthwhile addition to any Tori collection. |
