Even in the small doses, Tori Amos' kookiness can be a little hard to swallow. How many people actually made it through her ballet studio version of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" without wanting to kick in the stereo speakers? And that whole concept album about the wandering Native American minstrel? Mmm...'kay. But with The Beekeeper, the North Carolinian singer-songwriter really tests the limits, delivering no fewer than 19 new tracks of scattered weirdness, including '60s girl-group harmonies ("Ireland"), Southern gospel ("Witness") and spooky piano ballads ("Ribbons Undone"). Somewhere in here, there's a lovely, compact, cohesive little album. It just takes a little too much digging to find it.
