The Beekeeper (Epic/Sony BMG)

By now, expectations for new Tori Amos albums are usually somewhat limited. Although each of her releases since Little Earthquakes have contained a number of gems, none have matched the consistent brilliance of her debut. The Beekeeper, though it could lose a few of its 19 selections, surprises overall with its consistent depth and quality. There are plenty of the usual signature Tori elements herein. Her rippling piano (augmented with some tasteful organ) anchors the majority of the tracks, capable equally of pastoral beauty or powerful majesty. The writing is her usual blend of charming whimsy, heartbreaking poignancy and sometimes impenetrable surrealism (often in the same song). Her voice remains a free and flexible instrument, but the most winning elements on this album are the consistently memorable melodies that worm their way into your brain and quickly neutralise any other critical faculties you might muster.
