TORI AMOS The Beekeeper *** (3 stars)

NEXT time you have 80 minutes and billions of extra neurons to spare, sit down with the latest Tori Amos concept album and try to deduce why the six-sided structure of the honeycomb weighs so heavily on the arty singer-songwriter's brain. Album No. 8 by Amos features 19 tracks divided into six thematic "gardens", each supposedly representing some aspect of a) fertility; b) the essence of femininity; or c) the flavours of marshmallows in a box of Lucky Charms.

Ok, so it's not easy to figure out what the heck Tori's trying to say. Thankfully, most of the melodies on this sprawling piano-pop odyssey are relatively straightforward, as the normally melodramatic musician spends more time channeling sedate Sarah McLachlan than kooky Kate Bush. Tori being Tori, intense moments remain, provided you have the patience to withstand the entire 80 minutes. - Bartley Kives
