Tori Amos
The Beekeeper
(Song BMG)
***** (5 stars)
IF ANYONE needed to deliver an album of quality, it is Tori Amos. Since the astounding Little Earthquakes in 1992, she has laboured through six mostly spark-free releases. With 19 tracks, a running time of 80 minutes and a woolly concept which relates Christianity to American policy, The Beekeeper is a daunting prospect. Yet it is neither flabby nor self-indulgent. Amos has made a consistently rewarding album packed with pathos, humour, dexterous use of language and soaring melodies. Damien Rice duets on The Power of Orange Knickers, but the real gems are the gloriously cascading Witness, where Amos is soulful without being self-conscious, and Ireland, the most heart-stoppingly beautiful four minutes of her entire career. Not everything hits home instantly but with each play an extra dimension emerges. This really could be the making of Tori.
