The all-consuming synergy between Petty and his audience transformed the concert into an experience.
The same can be said for Tori Amos' March 31 concert, although for a different reason. The pianist/songwriter constantly pushes herself artistically, tinkering with her looks, her performing style, her music -- anything that contributes to her art form.
Seated among four keyboards, Amos reinvented her older songs and brought her newer ones to life. The audience could see that she's the kind of artist that is never satisfied and always trying to define the next level of her performance, even if it means temporarily alienating listeners who expect -- or want -- to hear what's familiar.
Fortunately, Amos has taught her fans to expect something different each time. It was refreshing to see an artist continue to experiment rather than sticking to a formula.
