From Abdul

Added December 7, 2001 - I just wanted to let you know this about Tori's Berlin performance on December 9th:

The show started at 9:25 PM

The show ended at about 11:00 PM

I did not know the [seceond] song [of the first encore] .... but she dedicated it to the composer: a lady she really adores: please help me out here :-(

After "Little Amsterdam" she talked a bit: some words about Berlin, which she seems to like much, she said she was sorry about being late, but her baby is a little sick, and she was a little sick, too, but it did not have any influence on the performance)

After the intro of "Tear in your hand" she stopped and excused. She had a hair in her mouth and wanted to start again. Then she added that such sings can happen to girls when they are doing their jobs.

It was the second Tori-show for me and after Plugged 98 it was the first time for me to see her performing alone. It was so intense. It amazed me how she transferred "Juarez" and "Take to the sky" into solo-piano version, "Leather" and "Crucify" were the old-time favourites, "Tear in your hand" and "Real men" will be in my heart forever, I almost cried at "Putting the damage" on and "Baker baker" and there is no better final than "Somewhere over the rainbow". I will spent a very content time during christmas and the next months remembering this evening ... and I hope to see Tori a-live very soon again.

Added December 9, 2001 - this is going to be very short because i'm sooooo tired. i came back home from the u.k. in the afternoon. dropped my stuff at home and went straight to the venue, hoping to be there for the m&g. unfortunately there was no m&g before and after the show. because tori seems to be pretty much ill - stillđhaving a sore throught and her schedule is really tight for the next few days. i'm amazed how she can manage to sing at all and the concert was wonderful! she said that she likes berlin a lot - good choice ;)! she really did well and was in a funny mood, even if you really could hear her voice disappearing more and more.

the setlist:

' 97 Bonnie & Clyde

Juarez

Little Amsterdam

Leather

Suede

Take To The Sky (she really took off!)

Putting The Damage On

I Don't Like Mondays

Tear In Your Hand (and when she sang 'time to wave goodbye' i thought that's gonna be the end of the concert, because she almost lost her voice)

Real Men

Crucify

Me And A Gun

Baker Baker

1st encore:

Cruel

Landslide

2nd encore:

Not The Red Baron

Somewhere Over the Rainbow (it was amazing how she managed to do that song so wonderful. it seemed she did it with the very lasst bit of her voice but it sounded so beautiful)

From Martin Strathmann

Added December 9, 2001 - I tried to call you after the Berlin show yesterday to give you the setlist (as I did in Hamburg) but I just couldn't get through. But as I see some others have been quite quick. Anyway, here's what I saw and heard and experienced ... and it was quite a lot.

we (my dear boyfriend, my dear friend ute and me) had second row seats, exactly in the direction that tori would look in for the most of the evening when playing the piano. i think she fixed me several times but that might just have been my little over-emotional behaviour.

before the concert started and even during ben christophers' set there was a lot of confusion in the front rows. the gig had been moved from ICC 2 to ICC 1 (which is considerably bigger) so many people were unable to find their seats or they got the wrong ones and had to go somewhere else. i guess there were a lot of people who thought that "row 2" meant 2nd row but, well, things ain't always that easy. in fact the second row was "row B" and "row 2" was a bit behind that. but when tori started everything was settled.

ben christophers was good as usual, quite a shy person but again he managed to convince many members of the audience with the beauty of his songs. tori time then:

'97 bonnie & clyde: well, yeah, we all know by now.

juarez: unrecognisable at the beginning and i caught myself thinking: "oh, not little amsterdam again, darling!" then she started singing "no angel caaaaame" several times. and it turned out to be a masterpiece. i find the original a bit hard to get sometimes but the piano version made me love it.

tori wore a green suited dress with a white underdress and a black top underneath and some very high heels with golden chains on it. a bit like a circus director but still marvellous. a bit pale she was but she would soon tell us why.

little amsterdam: better than in hamburg. but you could tell now that tori's voice wasn't at its very best tonight because she avoided the high notes in some places.

first speech: she said that they loved being in berlin because it was such a special place to them. "baby's a little sick ... mommy's a little sick ... but well, fuck it, we wanted to come here anyway."

leather: hurray! perfect from the first to the last note and she seemed to have a lot of fun playing it.

suede: unrecognised by the most of the crowd, very calm and the "oh little sister" part was faaaanstastic.

take to the sky: greeted with some cheers and tori was, erm, really into it. she banged the piano and put her hand onto her head whenever she sang the "take to the sky"-line. the red-haired guy in front of me did a marvellous stunt by touching his hair when tori sang "i dyed my hair red today". he also did a lot of lip-synching which turned out to be a bit difficult because tori doesn't really stick to the album's vocal performances. thankfully he didn't sing along.

putting the damage on: tear-jerking and just with piano. definitely a highlight.

i don't like mondays: a bit slower than on the album and very beautiful.

tear in your hand: tori played an intro and then stopped and said: "sorry, i've got a hair in my mouth! ... you know, girls, this happens when you're doing your job well." heehee! she played the song brilliantly.

real men: introduced by some thundering piano chords and my boyfriend had this terrific smile on his face because this was the one song he wanted to hear the most. a wonderful rendition and even better than on the album.

crucify: on the wurlitzer piano with the "my heart's in chains"-intro. astounding and perfect.

me & a gun: here you could tell that tori had problems with her voice tonight. she didn't finish all the lines properly. but she still managed to give one guy in 3rd row who dared to take a photograph a very distinctive look. he didn't touch his camera again.

baker baker: it got the most cheers of the night. and deserved it. wonderful and very touching.

she did her bows and left. and gladfully returned:

cruel: she introduced the wurly and said that she (the wurly) wanted to play the old songs. cruel isn't that old, but okay. she started it with a long intro in which she sang "i don't" repeatedly until it sounded something like "doodoodoo".

landslide: she said that this was her favourite song to cover (or her favourite song by a female writer) because "she's so hard". many people didn't know it but it got a very warm reception and looking around i saw some eyes filled with something liquid.

not the red baron: i was surprised that this got very many cheers. but her performance wasn't too surprising.

over the rainbow: ahhhh! marvellous.

i liked it somewhat better than her hamburg show. but that might be due to the better seats we had this time.

we soon found out that there wouldn't be a m&g after the show and left happy as could be. yyyyes.

From Agnieszka Kaczmarski

Added December 10, 2001 - Well just got home from the Berlin concert, and all. I can say is WOW! This was my second Tori concert ever and i was blown away, even though she was a little on the sick side, my first one was in Hamburg which was amazing but in a totally different way. In Hamburg i was totally dumbstruck and found I had to pinch myself to beleive I was really there. The set list for Berlin (which you already have) was amazing and I just couldn't keep the tears from rolling down my cheeks when I heard some of my favourite songs. Tori was in a playful mood last night despite not feeling her best, her movements with the songs were amazing and her coments to the audience were cheeky and sweet. I was sitting in the first row, which was really the nineth row, but in the middle and had a perfect view as I didn't have anyone sittling in front of me. The atmosphere was great despite some idiots cheering during the begging of Me and a Gun, and some losers taking photos. After the concert people were saying Tori's voice wasnt the best, I thought it added quite alot character to the songs. During '97 Bonnie and Clyde her voice was really husky and she sounded slightly out of breath which just made it sound so much creepier than the Hamburg version, I had goosebumps running up and me.

As i'm from Australia, although studying in Poland, a chance to see Tori live doesn't happen very easily for us Aussies so jumped at the opportunity to go, although i had to spend alot of time on a train, it was definately worth it! But cant wait to see Tori on my home land hopefully next tour.

I was a little dissapointed that i didn't get to meet her, as in Hamburg i waited 5 hours before the concert and got chased away just before she arrived, and afterwards there were too many people, and as you know she didn't do one last night. But I will hold my two trips to Hamburg and Berlin close to my heart as Tori's music means so much to me, and I just want to thank her. (Although she probably will never read this)

From Charlotte

Added December 10, 2001 - Here is my review from the Berlin concert yesterday. It was my first show so I have nothing to compare it with” However” It was amazing, very intense and she seemed to be in a really good mood!

Bonnie & Clyde: Very scary! It was absolutely what I expected (I already read so many concert reviews”). She almost seemed to cry at the end of the song.

Juarez: Not one of my favourite songs, but the live version was soooo much better than the album version!!! Little Amsterdam: Seemed to be very long” Also not one of my favourites” She played on the Bńsey and on the keyboard at the same time.

Leather: Before she started she said hello to the audience and something like: It`s great to be here in Berlin. It`s one of my favourite places on the world”. Baby is sick and mommy is also a little sick. That`s why we are a bit late” But fuck it!

We€re here now and we try to make the best of it!!

Then she started to play leather. The whole audience cheered when they recognized it!! I love that song. It was great! She also had fun playing it- she smiled and laughed a lot!

Suede: Very, very different from the album version. But really cool. She hammered on the strings of her Bńsey with her hands. I never heard about that before!

Take to the Sky: I really like that girl and how Tori clapped with her hand on the piano! She was very powerful!

Putting the Damage on: Very intense. Some people in the audience cried”

I don`t like Mondays: One of my favourites from SLG. She played it on the keyboard and it was nearly like the album version.

Tear in your Hand: She started” and then interrupted herself. She said with a very big smile:Oh, I had a hair in my mouth. You know girls, that happens when your are doing your job right! Then she started again. Great! I always loved that song but now it`s even more!!!

Real Men: A long intro (I have to admit I didn`t recognize the song at first). But a very nice surprise!!!!

Crucify: Very long improvisation. She played it on the wurly. It`s one of those all-time-favourites. The audience was happy to hear it!

Me and a Gun: No cell-phone rang! J

Baker baker: She played an intro and I thought it was twinkle, but obviously it wasn`t” Very powerful!!!!! Just great!

Cruel: She went on stage again and then introduced her wurly ( although she already played on it”). She told the story that the wurly came from Wodstock the real Woodstock ( she said that with a very funny voice)! She wanted to play an old song. So she played cruel. It seemed to be very short”

Landslide: She said something like: This is one of my favourite girls. I think this lady is very hot! A beautiful song which I heard for the first time!

Not the read Baron: Powerful intro! The song seemed longer than on the album!

Somewhere over the Rainbow: A perfect song to end a perfect concert!

But unfortunately everything has two sides” After Ben Christopher (who played six songs I think) the whole audience was-of course- waiting for Tori. But she didn`t come. We had to wait about 40 minutes!!!! Some people were already very angry and shouted boooo`s!

It was really annoying that she didn`t go on stage earlier!!!!!

The next thing: The concert took aout 1 and a half hour. Not very long if you consider the high prices for the tickets!!! But okay, she was still a bit ill!

And the last thing: There was NO meet and greet! Neither before the show, nor after it! I think it was the only concert on the whole tour where she didn`t do it!!!

Tori was DEFINATELY not up to scratch the poor thing - her performance was around half and hour shorter and her voice was sooooo not as good as the Glasgow and Manchester shows. She even seemed to be uncomfortable walking to and from the different pianos - kind of just really under the weather...

She chose songs purely on the fact that they didnt require her to sing high notes. I was speaking to Joel and he told me that these 3 UK shows were being reviews quite extensively by Time or The Times or something and that she wasnt going to repeat ANY songs excpet B&C + M&AG. It turns out she repeated Leather on manchester instead of spacedog which was strange but repeated like 3 or 4 songs in london which was really really obvious. The songs she sang were still beautiful - (i have no idea where leather came from AGAIN!) - but they werent done with the tori magic and angelic voice of tori like at glas and manch.

EACH song was a song she only had to sing in a low husky voice and wouldnt require much strain on her voice (suede, lil amsterdamn leather, cruel etc) or that didnt have a 'screamy high pitched loud' section in it.
I was soooo disapointed with the setlist - It was a real pitty she was so under the weather - poor tori.

I am soo glad i saw the manch and glasgow shows or i would have been really disappointed... Oh well...

Review by Aimee1

Just some lines from myself.
First off, the confusion regarding seats was not caused by people being unable to read their tickets but because the room had changed. So the majority of people had tickets for Room 2, the concert took place in Room1 which has a completely different seating plan.

Anway, if you were bothered by the two peole in row 4 (center) getting up in the middle of Ben's gig, one of them was me because we had been sent to the wrong seats. By that time the whole freakin room was full and the people there were frantically looking for seats for us. After an odyssey to several seats I eventually ended up only one row behind the on I had booked, dead center, so I was happy.

As this was my first Tori show I was so struck by her, i can't explain. Although she did none of my favorite songs, the first, the last and Tear in your hand were so brilliant. It's a revelation to look at her while she's playing. It's like seeing a glimpse of her universe.

I was surprised she did 2 encores despite her voice. It was a shame about her voice, she sang many lines in a lower key than usual, esp. Crucify sounded very strange. By the end of the concert it seemed to get better. Somewhere Over The Rainbow sounded wonderful.

The loudspeakers really sucked. The sound quality was so bad. I did not expect that because at this venue they always have the most fabulous musicians, lots of classical music. At first it was during the high notes on the piano that the speakers were kinda crackling. They seemed to be able to adjust that but it still was there on the very low notes.

Whenever she played the wurly, the quality was awful. You wouldn't hear it when she was singing but during the instrumental parts it was quite annoying.

I must say I was fascinated by the light effects. They used so little props on the stage but combined with the light they created the most amazing shapes.
