From Snap

Added December 5, 2001 - Got to the venue quite early. Seats weren't great (I was in the Gods) but I was at the front of the section dead centre.

Support act (didn't catch his name) was very good. Kinda like a less harsh, less angsty Nine Inch Nails.

'97 Bonnie and Clyde
Tori hadn't come on stage yet, there was a large black sheet with holes in it covering the stage area, and a projection of "Bonnie's Mother" to the right hand side. Pretty light show too. Tori's voice was very haunting. Just when the song finished, the curtains dropped and Tori comes out wearing what I can only describe as red silk pyjamas with slits up the side of each leg. Or at least that's what it looked like to me, but I was far away. Played on backing track (Note: I think the high notes on the "Just the two of us" part were not sung live, but on the backing track.)

Little Amsterdam
Beautiful (but then the whole thing was). Tori's voice was very deep and rich. Played on Bose and electric.

Father Lucifer
Very mellow. Played on Bose. She then spoke about how good men are at changing nappies (diapers) because they're so good with shit.

Leather
Mmmmmm. Dreamy performance. Played on Bose.

Lust
Again dreamy. She seemed to be really getting in to it now, after a mellow beginning. Played on Bose and electric.

Little Earthquakes
Shiver-down-the-spine-tastic. Just right. Played on Bose.

Take To The Sky
WooHoo! I think Tori's stolen my dream setlist. Done with the usual hitting of piano. Played on Bose. I

mprov into Josephine
I think it was improv, anyway, I didn't recognise it. Again, wonderful, it just seemed to drift about and fill the hall. Played on electric.

Etteine
Oh my god!! I let out an involuntary woop when she started on the piano. When she started singing the tears came. Absolutely gorgeous. Played on Bose and electric.

Butterfly
She picked 'em tonight, oh boy. Never dreamed we'd get this one. Lots of energy. Played on Bose She now went to the Whirly and told the story of it's great origins, pretty much the same as in Union Chapel in august, but shorter.

Crucify
Interesting introduction, I thought it was going to be Silent All These Years at one point. Very drawn out, but it worked very well. And she didn't forget the words this time. Played on whirligig.

Putting The Damage On
Oooh. Smooth and mellow, but with an edge. Played on Bose.

Me And A Gun
Wonderful as usual. She sang the shorter version without "You can laugh...etc" Played without accompaniment.

Landslide
Quite frenetic actually. Actually the first time I'd heard the song (I know, bad me). Played on Bose
Tori then waved goodbye and went offstage. We cheered and clapped and she came back.

Icicle
Didn't seem quite as long as usual. I think because she did a slightly shorter introduction. Played on Bose.

Winter
Slower than usual, more mellow. Played on Bose.

Tori went off again, we cheered again, she came back again.

Purple People (Christmas in Space)
Right when this started, almost everyone on the floor level left their seats and stood right at the stage. Lucky people. Played on Bose.

Twinkle
Very sensuous. When she sang "I know a boy twice as hot" she looked directly and the sound booth and made sure everyone knew it. We whooped at this a bit. Played on Bose. I was just about ready to leave at this point (2 encores of 2 songs seems fair), happy with my lot, but slightly upset that she didn't play my favourite song, when suddenly:

Rattlesnakes
YES!! Superb as usual. Played on Bose and electric.

Happy with my lot, we went round to the side door and found about 35 other people there waiting too. After about 35 minutes a security man (Joel I think, but I couldn't see well) told us she would only be out for a few minutes as she needs to protect her voice from the cold (which is fair). 10 minutes later Tori came out, signed some autographs and spoke to some people. I didn't see her leave as I left as soon as I got something signed, so as to make way for people behind me.

Verdict: Superb, only a couple of songs off my dream setlist.

From DyingEachDay

Added December 5, 2001 - Ok, all i can say was the show was so cool she played little earth quakes, etienne, winter and twinkle.....i didnt write it down i wanted to focus on the show, you know? She was wearing red satin trousers spilt to the knee and a red top with puffed shoulders, fishnet stockings and cool pointy shoes. The worst thing about the concert was that we were not given permission to hand tori flowers during the show but they did get to her somehow. She was nearly crying at the end of winter...

She commented on men being "good at shit" when it comes to changing babies. But anyway, the night was long and cold and her fans waited outside for an hour to catch a glimpse of her and it was well worth it! she signed EVERYONE! I talked about Iona, since she sang twinkle, as my father works at the abbey sometimes and knows the workers, including Diane. She smiled, said its a must to visit there during the summer!

i should also say that her support act was well recieved here! Very modern folk mixed with a Tori influence by the sound of it!

From B.McIlroy

Added December 6, 2001 - There were a few surprises in the setlist, the biggest being Butterfly and Landslide. However, the highlight for me was Josephine which she performed after a long introduction which seemed to be an improv. Putting the damage on was another favourite of mine as was a hauntingly beautiful version of winter. I was slightly dissapointed that there were only two of my favourites on the setlist. I was dying to hear Siren, sugar, hey jupiter, pretty good year and jackie's strength. Choirgirl is my favourite tori album so i was also a bit gutted that none of the songs from it were played. Negativaty asides, tori was on top form and she looked great wearing a bright red catsuit thingy (thats the only words i can use to describe it).

From Semi P

Added December 6, 2001 - I can verify the set list in Glasgow at the december 5th.

It was:

'97 Bonnie & Clyde
Little Amsterdam
Father Lucifer

- chatted about changing diapers and told how men are actually quite good at it cause we're good at shit! ;) - and then into:

Leather
Lust
Little Earthquakes (Lot of L's tonight! :) )
Take to the Sky
impro - Josephine
Etienne
Butterfly
Crucify (with whirly or whatever she is...)
Putting the Damage on
Me & a Gun
Landslide

The 1st encore:

Icicle
Winter

The 2nd encore:

Purple People
Twinkle
Rattlesnakes

It was my first Toriconcert ever and it was incredible!!!

She wore a red thing that was real appropriate for I think she was in a very sexy mood! :) During Take to the Sky she sang loudly "Take it take it boys, take it boys" and pushed her hips forward rhytmically, got a lot of cheers.

Then in the end, right in the beginning of the Rattlesnakes she pulled with her both hands the dress downwards so that whatever black lacy top she had underneath the red dress came visible, people cheering again.

It looked like someone got a picture of that in the front row.

People rushed right in front of the stage in the beginning of Purple People, those lucky ones! I think it was a touching moment, Tori singing Purple People which is really a wishful song, all those people right before her, like children in a kindergarten coming to listen a good story. Or a mom (which she is) having all her children silent there. Nice and cozy.

In Twinkle she sang "I know a boy twice as hot" instead of a girl and smiled broadly...

And the setlist, I have to say it was as if she had read my mind! I've had dreams about going to a Tori concert for years and there are these five songs that she always plays in them... Winter, Icicle, Little Earthquakes, Putting the Damage on and Flying Dutchman... Well obviously she didn't sing Dutchman but 4 out of 5 is quite surprising! I was sure she wouldn't do Damage but she did! That was the point I was really close to tears... like during Little Earthquakes cause that's my favourite live song!

Etienne was another beautiful surprise! Crucify was really really haunting and dreamy with that old thing that "survived Woodstock this long!" (That's how Tori introduced her...)

And I didn't believe getting to hear Twinkle... it was a great moment. I had Twinkle playing in my head the day before, walking up and down the streets of Glasgow so I think it was cool that she played it!

Twinkle alone could have been such a perfect ending to the night but then she did Rattlesnakes!!! Wow, I really wanted to hear that for it's my favourite from SLG!!!

Then, the perfect ending to the night was that she eventually did come out and say hello to people and sign our stuff... She's so tiny and cute! People were freezing there, I wasn't so much, I guess I'm used to cold weather since I'm from Finland... Tori was wearing very warm clothes too, which was understandable. She has to take care of that voice.

BTW, the first encore couldn't have been more suitable for the weather; Icicle and Winter... the background lights were really beautiful during those songs, Icicle being turqoise and purple, Winter very snowy white lacy patterns in icy blue background.

Okay, so the evening was perfect and there's really nothing to complain. Except this one thing that did bother me a bit... There are people who seem to go to every concert possible and that's just fine with me. Totally. But if you get to see Tori every night, even so often that she already knows you and speaks to you like to an old friend, don't you think it would be fair to let other people speak to her too once in a while? I think there were lots of us in Glasgow who had never seen Tori before, but we didn't get any chance because these (American) people were blocking our view... I mean, shouldn't there be that much understanding between a tori fan and another?

Well, nothing can be perfect. Tori did the best she could to please everyone in the crowd back the Clyde Auditorium. Thanks, Tori, thanks so much! You gave me really something to remember!

Amiable Amos
by John Kilbride

Tori Amos
Clyde Auditorium, Glasgow
Wednesday, December 5, 2001

It was a surprisingly low-key start to the Tori Amos concert at Glasgow's Clyde Auditorium, with a darkened stage, a large photo of Tori and a recording of her cover of Eminem's '97 Bonnie and Clyde playing. When she entered, wearing a smart and rather formal trouser suit, you would have been forgiven for thinking a night of her more difficult music was ahead.

True, Tori does specialise in the more emotionally intense number, songs like Me And A Gun, a song about her autobiographical rape account performed towards the end of the show remains as harrowing as ever, undimmed by familiarity. I've never seen so many people squirm uncomfortably in their seats in absolute pin-drop silence before.

But any pretension is quickly put aside. After a couple of numbers she's joking about men changing nappies like the audience and she are old friends.

She is a captivating performer, easily holding the audiences attention, all the more extraordinary given that the show relies almost entirely on just piano and voice. There is some occasional keyboard playing (often at the same time as playing the piano, of course,) and an interlude on a keyboard that once played at Woodstock (in original garish paint-job) for Crucify. But no backing band, no electronics and no unnecessary props. The piano and voice provide all the drama that's needed.

The well-chosen cover version has always been one of her strengths. Early in her career she was performing songs by Nirvana, Led Zepplin and even Chas 'n Dave with such panache and style they could easily be mistaken for her own compositions. The Strange Little Girls album is the logical extension of this tendency, but the gig was no showcase for this release. Her own back catalogue contains enough strong material without having to rely on other people's work for support. Songs from throughout her career are given a well-deserved airing, including gems like Winter, Father Lucifer and Little Earthquakes.

However, the last word did go to a cover version. Hats off to her for performing Lloyd Cole's Rattlesnakes as the final encore. There have always been Scottish references in her work from lyrics about being a witch running through the fields of Scotland in Etienne, a song a dating from before her solo career, and Iona Abbey getting a mention in Twinkle on the Boys for Pele album. Both were performed tonight. These songs and a tribute to an almost-local legend as the closing number leads me to think that Tori is a big fan of Scotland. Going by tonight's performance, Scotland has every right to be a big fan of her as well.

Ivories Power

Tori Amos: Clyde Auditorium, Glasgow ****

Live rock: Tim Abrahams Alanis Morissette was notably crestfallen when her heroine, Joni Mitchell, pointed out how 'manufactured' an artist she was. Despite that damning assessment, Morissette's spiky songwriting is among the best we have had from a mainstream female singer-songwriter in a long, long time.

Since Tori Amos that is. She's packaged perhaps (tonight in a vampish red robe and black high heels) but at least she exhibits control over the packaging she puts on (witness the fancy-dress playfulness of her recent album of cover versions Strange Little Girls).

Tonight, though, Tori Amos is mostly going to be Tori Amos. She plays an entire set of her classic songs with only her own keyboard-playing as accompaniment. She may open with her Eminem cover 97 Bonnie And Clyde and close with an absolutely majestic version of Lloyd Cole's Rattlesnakes, but, in between, Tori Amos gives us a chance to scrutinise her writing as much as her performing.

There is no doubting her ability in the latter. She playfully mocks the blokes in the audience for their diaper-changing prowess. Then she stops everyone's hearts with a searing a cappella version of Me And A Gun -- her now famous description of being raped at gunpoint. She creates the illusion of intimacy for an audience of 3000 while simultaneously drawing out the dynamic of quietly personal tunes such as Little Earthquakes, which drives along at a rare old rate.

Her singing, at times, is almost supernaturally beautiful. Aided by buckets of reverb, she fills the Armadillo. She attacks the higher registers of Landslide and Etienne Trilogy with the full range of her Kate Bush-like arsenal. Sure, this may be only an illusion of intimacy but it's an enchanting illusion for all that.

Intimate, enchanting -- the same words sum up the world of Amos's songwriting, yet perhaps in a more pejorative sense. Her vocabulary tends to repeat itself. Strangely for a woman from North Carolina, she returns again and again to images of snow and ice. It suits the brittle, fragility of minor-chord delights such as Little Earthquakes, but her world of fairytale enchantment can occasionally lapse into the whimsical.

At times, the way she warps the imagery of her Methodist upbringing makes her a musical magical realist, a cross between Angela Carter and Kate Bush, but again she gets lost in the thick forest of her own mythology. For every majestic Me And A Gun there is the slightly self-indulgent Crucify. Given that she has just expressed a number of other voices by recording an album of cover versions, it's odd that this feature should reveal itself.

The two songs that book-end her set, particularly the Eminem cover, prove what a broad church of viewpoints and opinions she can entertain in one voice. Her songwriting is frequently as beautiful and clever as she is in performance, but one wonders if she is capable of a more expansive, embracing style. Tori Amos can always be relied on to step outside her packaging visually -- maybe her songwriting is heading that way too.

Oh My God!!!!!
How good was that??? It was like almost my dream set. It was definately Butterfly, by the way.

I'm told there was no M&G beforehand, but there was a short one afterwards. Tori came out after about 35-45 minutes looking sooooo cute in a little bobble hat. She talked to some people and signed some things (including my Past The Mission 7" W00t!!)

Review by Scottish Woman

HI everybody!

Have just woken up after the best Tori concert! OK, she didn't play all of my favourites, but still...did anyone take photos? I had to hand my camera in at the cloakroom, they were searching bags...got a bit nervous...didn't want the concert to be spoiled for me you know. However, I noticed that during Ben Christophers, those who were taking pictures had the cameras taken off them.
aGent dOuble pOo, I could not see you! I was looking, but I must have been looking the wrong way...

A few things to add to previous reviews:

After Father Luifer, Tori turned to the audience, and said "so. How's everybody doing?" and we all cheered et cetera. And then she said " so you know. Mommy!" and I think I was the only person out of 10 000-odd people who applauded. Then she said something about men being really good at changing diapers, and how it was great being a mommy. Then someone behind shouted "You're great Tori!" but what with the accent, it sounded like "yur grrrate Torrry"!. And she replied "Sorry, what was that honey?". And the guy repeated it. And she looked confused and said "OK. I didn't understand a word of that, but anyway..." everybody laughed - then she said to the guy "So are you a Dad?" and the guy's friend shouted "Is he fuck!" to much laughter, though I don't think Tori understood a word. She then said "Well, maybe you are a dad, and you just don't know about it..." and she played her next song. Somewhere in between all this she shouted "yeah. fucking right!". There seemed to be a lot of swearing last night...maybe because it was Scotland .
I just knew she was going to play Etienne!

The two girls that went up to the stage and got chased back by the bouncers were trying to give Tori a bunch of flowers and a stuffed toy. I think one of them thought that by greetin' (i.e. crying a l'Ecosse) she might get to see Tori...I noticed she was the first out of her seat when they all rushed the stage...which brings me to my next point....

I DON'T PAY GOOD FUCKING MONEY TO SEE THE BACK OF DRUNKEN/STONED PEOPLE's HEADs! That was immensely rude! If I was Joel (or Tori) I would have been very very annoyed! Joel was hanging around the stage throughout the whole show, at first I thought it was Marcel (sound engineer) as he had headphones on, but it must have been to block out Tori's music. Why?

Lots of random people stayed behind after the show (those who had rushed the stage mainly) and I watched, with disgust, as the set-list got practically torn up by rabid fans.

I myself left as soon as it finished (had to get the last train at 11.11). But all in all, a great experience for me.

Review by nun chaser

Hello everyone! *grins*

I tried looking out for you SW, but i never saw you.. i kinda forgot where you and aGent were sitting.. argh. Anyway, WOW!!! That was my first Tori concert but WOW!! I'm so jealous of anyone going to the next ones... you lucky ducks!

So, it took us (i dragged my parents along - free taxi service ) over 2 hours to get there, bought my t-shirt *grins* and watched the supporting act (who was he again?!). Oh, i was sitting in H36 i think. I liked him, i'll have to look up some of his stuff.. so, after that was done and we had all made friends with this Australian girl (who was going off to see the Manchester concert as well - lucky!) and swapped Bob Dylan-Joint smoking stories (private giggle), the lights dropped and '97 B&C started.

OMG! aGent, i was covered in goose bumps as well!! It was SO intense! I've never felt so drawn in at a concert before.. that black curtain was so eerie, like we saw all those slashes to get an idea of what was happening, but we weren't allowed to see what was really happening.. WONDERFUL staging!!! And when the curtain dropped at the end! WOO! Did that catch your heart or what?!

I loved when she had her little conversation with us! She's sooo sharp! And cute! It was hilarious, i was giggling away. Oh, that outfit she was wearing? It was the same one she wore on Jay Leno a while back. Well, so many time during that concert my eyes welled up, there were so many moments! But my stand out ones are...

Butterfly - i love this song! And she did this little thing at the end.. i don't know what it was, but it was this sweet fast little tune put in just before the "pretty garden" bit. I've never heard it before.. and it sounded so cute! And she was sort of bouncing around in her seat when playing it, hehe!

Take To The Sky - when she almost snarled "take a seat" at one point. WOO!! Grr! And clapping her hand against the piano.. *sigh*... so intense..

Oh lord, i can't remember what song it was, but in one she pretty much grabbed the mic and practically screamed in it. It was in one of the songs near the begining. Fantastic!

I'm so glad you got a tape recording of it aGent!!! YAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll be dloading them if you get them up! YAY YAY!

What really sucked though, was that i had a headache and a pretty nasty one at that! But i lasted out ok and rushed to get some paracetemol as soon as i got home. I don't think sitting right under some loud speakers helped, but hell! I had such great seats!!

The people who rushed up at the end. Hmm. Luckily they did not get in my way, i could still see. It was kind of sweet in the way, but yeah, Joel (aGent)"if you try and come on the stage i will kill you.. " LMAO! That says it exactly!! OH! Did you see? Tori flashed the people who were standing up by the stage. It was somewhere during her third encore before a song i think.. Well, i didn't see it properly, she just quickly pulled back the two sides of her red suit.. i was her grinning after doing that. Hehe!

I left when it was all done, didn't hang around or anything, don't think that would have gone down well with my driver. Whew, ok, that's all i can think of right now.

**JUST THOUGHT**
Etienne! When she played that i just smiled after remembering that you'd mentioned that SW! Oh, there was something else.. ack, it's gone.

Review by Andrew (Andyman)

Hi Folks,
I only just found this forum tonight so hence my lateness in talking about the concert last night!
It rocked!!

I've seen Tori a few times now, in fact three times in the states in '98 and I saw her backstage once prior to a show so I'm maybe luckier than some people...if I'd known that she'd come out at the end I would have stayed, oh well!!

I'm so glad she played 'Etienne', it's one of my very favourites...I couldn't believe it when that came on, I just got totally lost in it!
The set list was great, I think she really wanted to please her die hard fans on this tour more than anything.

Incidentally, I was in row N at the bottom, in the gap between blocks and I saw everyone rushing past..the ushers stopped everyone after a minute and it was quite funny, like stopping a dam with your finger! Scottish people are polite though, so they didn't push through. Did block our view though for a time until the ushers moved everyone away. There was one weird guy who came down a minute later and hunkered down in the aisle!!

Anyway, this is a cool forum - good to hear from others who were there too!

From Fabien Desse

Added February 12, 2002 - In December, I went to GLASGOW, with 2 friends of mine. Glasgow is just a hour drive from Edinburgh where I live. I have to say that it was the best show I have ever ever seen! The venue was brand new and great. The accoustic was so good it was perfect! Had the impression we all had gathered in a studio to hear Tori recording!! The set list was excellent to me: I was delighted to hear Father Lucifer, Crucify, Little Amsterdam, Landslide, Butterfly. Besides, Tori was looking gorgeous, she was soooo beautiful and elegant. We were sitting on the eight row, again. During the encore, a few people went to the stage. I did not think twice to do the same! We leaned to the stage. Tori was six feet away! It was like a vision! From where we were the sound was so different. We just almost could not hear it... But we sure could see her so well! I was peeing myself as she sang Purple People, Twinkle, I love them... Then it was Rattlesnake, so beautiful. Her voice was at the top. She was excellent. And only for Etienne, this would have been worth it... I always loved this song, and being a Frenchboy living in Scotland, this song is big to me! Then it was over... She came to us, she had made eye contact with us while playing, and she touched our hands. And she touched mine... and I was whoaa... The best show ever, to me... In line to take the bus back to Edinburgh I made a few friends. We had a Tori night two weeks ago, it was nice. We had to get taxis to get back home, 'cause there were not enough seats on the bus, not enough seats on the second bus they could get for us. It cost many people a lot of money to head back to Edinburgh, and you could see these black british cabs full of Toriphiles on the Scottish deserted highway...
