Sightings reported from March 16, 2000 through May 31, 2000 Tori Mentioned Again On VH1's "The List"(May 31, 2000) - Ears With Feet Ciccone4, Raven, LadyAlmathea and Nic report: Today [Friday, May 26, 2000] on a brand new The List, it was on The Best Album of the 90's with host k.d. Lang. When they were viewing some of the best albums, they flashed the cover of LE on the video screen and later the (drummer?) of Iron Maiden commented that if he'd known so many girl bands were gonna be listed (Fiona, Alanis), he'd have listed Tori Amos because she is great! Right after her actual mentioning of name on the List a little while back, she appears briefly back in "Crucify" video form. The host was k.d. lang and the subject was (once again) Sexiest Female Artist. Tori wasn't even mentioned (boo!) but on the montage in the beginning featuring the suggestions and viewer picks, at the end (probably one of the last images) Tori appears in the "Crucify" scene with her face in the center and the sides are black, like a center split-screen, where she's dressing in the gothic outfit. Small sighting, but gotta thank my eye doctor. I'm shocked I saw it; it was less than a second it seemed- but it wasn't hard to place. Tori mention in The Guardian(May 31, 2000) - Ears With Feet Danny.Weddup reported to the Precious Things mailing list: There is a wee mention of Tori in this morning's [May 26, 2000] Guardian newspaper in the U.K., in amongst the review of the new Armand Van Helden album, 'Killing Puritans': ''Van Helden's willingness to jump across generic boundaries, not to mention his idiosyncratic sound, made him an in-demand remixer during the 90s. it was his reworking of Tori Amos's Professional Widow in 96 that truly made his name. With the singer's 'It's got to be big' hook line strung out across bass lines and mangled h-hats, the track established van Helden as a commercial proposition. Further still, by combining intricate drum 'n' bass patterns with house's solid four beat rhythm, Van Helden more or less invented the sound now dubbed two-step garage.' The review then goes on to give his album a bit of a kicking. "Winter", Michelle Kwan, and "Cinderella on Ice"(May 31, 2000) - Ears With Feet Richard Handal and, Kelly a.k.a-WaterColor Stain, and Vega Star report: Winter was played on ABC's special Cinderella on Ice, this evening at 10:00 (et). [Monday, May 29, 2000] I only caught half as I made a mad dash to find my Tori tape, but managed to see true beauty of this performance. Michelle Kwan ice skated to it before the actual program started...it stopped before Tori actually ends the song with those last few bars of vocal improv. Beautiful, Just wish I'd known it was on before. Oh well, always great to see a Tori surprise on TV. Richard added that they showed scenes of Michelle Kwan visiting China as well on this U.S. program, which was shown a few days earlier as well. I was flipping channels today .... and I landed on this Cinderella on Ice special running on CYB-WB. It had an girl [Michelle Kwan] ice skating to "Winter" along with some other snippets of her doing other things in China I'm guessing. The reason I'm guessing China is because this skating was taking place in People Hall in China. The skating and snippets matched the beauty and grace of the song very well. Concertina heard on Lithuanian radio station(May 31, 2000) - Ears With Feet Toriphile4Pele reports: Two months ago while in Lithuania I have spotted seen 'To Venus and Back'. Two days later while driving to a high school in Vilnius, I heard Concertina on the radio. I was showed the school by a teacher friend of mine, and met some fluent english students who asked me who my favorite musical artists was. Of course i replied Tori. It 'sparked' a whole conversation about 'From the Choir Girl Hotel' and Venus with the students. One girl, Lynna, said that after getting 'Little Earthquakes' the year it was released, she started piano lessons, and has been taking them since. About four other kids attending the school said that they also liked Tori. Venus, choir girl, and pele were spotted in Poland too. The Virtual Sound "BackMaestro"(May 31, 2000) - Ears With Feet Laura Heywood reports: 2 Christmases ago, Santa brought me an electric back massaging chair cover that can sense the beat of the music you are listening to, and massage to the beat. On the cover of the box (which is huge), a guy is sitting on the chair, listening to head-phones, and looking at a magazine article about Tori! It is the most recent Rolling Stone article (1998 "Tori Amos: Her Secret Garden" cover. The massager is called the Virtual Sound "BackMaestro". I just thought you would like to know so you could add this to your "sightings" page! The Brunching Shuttlecocks(May 31, 2000) - Ears With Feet Cherdy reports: Humor website The Brunching Shuttlecocks (www.brunching.com) mentioned 2 (!) Tori lyrics in one week, in their disclaimer on the home page, where they always feature a various lyric. Today (May 27, 2000) it said: Jason Flom(May 31, 2000) - Ears With Feet Mikewhy reports: I found a May 30, 2000 press release at the Yahoo! web site about Jason Flom, who is about to be given the first annual "Music Visionary of the Year" award by The Music Group of the Entertainment, Media & Communications Division of UJA-Federation of New York. Part of the press release talks about Flom's career: Jason Flom's music industry career began 21 years ago this July, when he was hired by Atlantic Records as a trainee field merchandiser. Within a year, Flom was awarded his first gold record - for designing a full-page trade ad for AC/DC with the memorable line, ``The Highway To Hell is paved with platinum.'' In 1981, he began doing sales research, in the course of which he discovered and brought his first act to Atlantic - Zebra, whose label debut was certified gold.
Joining Atlantic's A&R department in 1983, Flom proceeded to sign a string of multi-million-selling rock bands, including Twisted Sister, Skid Row, and White Lion. By the late-'80s, he had begun to expand the musical scope of his signings, most notably with the inking of Tori Amos, who became one of the most influential and popular artists of the '90s. Tori on VH1's The List(May 22, 2000) - Ears With Feet Anne Hedley, Meredith and Holly report: Today's new 4:00 episode of The List featured that girl who plays "Lori" on "That '70's Show," and Matt ?, lead singer/guitarist of "Vertical Horizon." The theme of today's episode was "Best Band/Artist of '90's." Matt named Tori as the second best artist of the '90's!!!But when it came time to eliminate selections in the final round, Dumb-Blonde-Ditz-Chick kicked Tori off the List, and with no explanation why!!! This show also included clips of "Crucify" and good PR from Matt. I was watching VH1's The List on Friday May 19, 2000 with host Brian McKnight. Guests included Chuck D, A girl from "that 70s show", another girl from Baywatch, and the lead singer of the band Vertical Horizon. The topic of the show was "Best band or artist of the 90s". The guy from Vertical Horizon chose Tori as his second pick and had some very nice words and comments to say about her and her music and writing style. Very positive stuff. The girl from "that 70s show" also stated a few nice things about tori, including how "chills run down her back" when she hears tori's music. They played a clip from "Crucify" when the singer from Vertical Horizon annouced Tori as his second pick. Tori did not make it to the final cut though. The girl from baywatch took her off the list. The comment was made that "tori is toast" (as she was being removed from the list). Though she didn't make it to the final cut, this episode was much more positive than the episode with the meatloaf incident. The lead singer from Vertical Horizon top three picks: 3. The Dave Mathews Band The final top three ended up being:
3. Wu tang clan The four that ended up being removed from the list were: Alanis Morrisette (by Chuck D) Sorry I couldn't remember all the names of the people on the list. VH1 Behind The Music Special For 1999(May 22, 2000) - Ears With Feet e.liz.a.beth. reports: VH1 has a new handful of Behind the Music specials, each dedicated to an important year in music. One of those is for 1999. In the opening, right before they were going to show the titles was a very-very short clip of Tori from the Bliss video. I was surprised, and then expected her mention to be something relative to the mp3.com thing. Well, they talked about Alanis and "her tour" sponsored by the site, with no mention of Tori. How typical. cowdance.com and Tori Amoos(May 22, 2000) - Ears With Feet Sierra reports: Hey Mike! I found an interesting Tori Sighting I thought you'd like to know about. At cowdance.com/tori/ they have a Tori dance called Tori Amoos (RAINN) Dance. It shows a clip of Tori from the RAINN concert but she has a cow face and arms. It lists several songs including Spark, Winter, MAAG, SATY, Precious Things and others. Bungie Jumping To Professional Widow!(May 22, 2000) - Ears With Feet Christina Holly reports: Here another Tori sighting from Germany. We got a show on german TV that is called "Tatort". On Thursday the showed an episode called "Bloodhounds" and there was a scene were two people were bungie jumping, and during this scene they played "Professional Widow". It was very strange, because it really didn`t fit, but I was positively surprised to hear Tori an german TV. UTNE Reader and "The Wussy Boy Chronicles"(May 22, 2000) - Ears With Feet Kitty reports: This was found on page 100 of UTNE Reader, May / June 2000 issue. R. Eirik Ott writes poetry, listens to Tori Amos,
and attends gender conferences. He is sensitive,
creative, and passionate. He is also straight and in
an age when TV notions of heterosexual masculinity
seldom rise above pro sports, copious beer drinking,
and an adolescent fixation on bodily functions, he
doesn't fit in. So Ott created his own fender
category, the wussy boy, and his own zine: The Wussy
Boy Chronicles, an irreverent yet earnest look at the
world of one man "caught somewhere between guy and
gay."
With three issues published and a fourth in the
works, the zine does exactly what the title promises.
Each essay is a meditation on what it means to be a
wussy boy, as revealed by the events of Ott's own
life. He conveys a central truth about wussiness, for
instance in a short history of his recent hairstyles,
from a kick-ass "Soundgarden" shag to a George Clooney
wave (done to please a crush-worthy girl) to a
defiantly shaved head. The moral: Wussy boys are
hopeless romantics who will do almost anything for
love, especially unrequited love, but they're just as
sure to reclaim their dignity in the end. Hair is
only one part of what now amounts to a whole whussy
worldview replete with patron saints (Matthew
Broderick, pictured on cover of Issue #2) and
archenemy "cock man oppressors" (Charlie Sheen).
Whether funny or sad, and even at their most rambling,
these essays bring the reader to the same delighted
apprecitation for all things wussy and all things Ott.
Future issues of The Wussy Boy Chronicles will go,
Ott says, wherever he goes. He wants the zine to
remain personal, and he has no desire to become the
voice for wussy boys everywhere. He only hopes that
others caught between guy and gay will be proud of who
they are --and especially of who they are not. Ott
spent six years in the navy learning how he didn't
want to live his life. "If being a wuss means not
being a racist, sexist asshole," he explains, "then
God bless America."

(poetryslam@hotmail.com) Tori Mentioned On Heartless Bitches International Web Site(May 22, 2000) - Ears With Feet GayPixie21 reports: At the Heartless Bitches International web site, under Heroines in Pop Culture, Music that Evokes the Bitch in Us, near the bottom they talk about LE... The page is hysterical! Here is what they say: "While some might believe she spends too much energy bemoaning real or imagined past agonies (particularily at the hands of men), her album "Little Earthquakes" is not to be missed for its great songs dealing with sardonic rememberances of rape, bad relationships, and maturing. Contains the immortal lines "...Those Christian boys/ Just 'cause you can make me cum doesn't make you Jesus," and "Yes I wore a slinky red thing/ Does that mean that I should spread?"" Tiny Tori Mention In Bust(May 22, 2000) - Ears With Feet Marla Tiara reports: In the new issue of Bust (the Spring 2000 issue), they reprint the quote from Tori from Rolling Stone about men trying to blow up the moon and mess with women's cycles. It's under the heading "She-Bonics" with quotes from other famous women. Nifty! (but then again, Bust always loves Tori!) New York Times Form(May 22, 2000) - Ears With Feet Meredith reports: I recently filled out a form for a points reward system online through the New York Times. There was a section on the online form that asked what type of music do (you) enjoy. Each type of music was accompanied by at least two artist names. Under the category of alternative the two artists listed were Beck and Tori Amos. So there she goes again...popping up all over the place! ;) People CrossWord Puzzle(May 22, 2000) - Ears With Feet Kyle Lauren reports: Just a little note to let you know of a small Tori sighting! The clue for 14 Across in this week's (Not sure of the exact issue date) People magazine (feat. Caroline Kennedy on the cover) reads: Tori ____ (To Venus and Back) The Band Sleater-Kinney(May 11, 2000) - Ears With Feet Mikewhy reports: Tori is referred to rather negatively in an article posted at the Salon web site on May 9, 2000 about a band named Sleater-Kinney. The article is a conversation between the article's writers, Jeff Stark and Stephanie Zacharek, about the band Sleater-Kinney. Zacharek mentions Tori in the paragraph you see below. Follow this link to the complete article to get the full context: Well, I'm older than you are, but even in my advanced state of decrepitude I think there's time yet to topple the despot. And I think it can be done by coming on like gangbusters -- as Sleater-Kinney do. But I also think that there are benefits to plain, old-fashioned stealth. All those crappy bands that make heaps of money -- Limp Bizkit, Phish, No Doubt -- or even well-meaning bores like Jewel, or sincere, flamboyant bores like Tori Amos, I don't think any of them see Sleater-Kinney as a real threat, even now, with all the praise the band have earned. The Drew Garabo Show(May 11, 2000) - Ears With Feet Marc reports: hi, my name is marc, and im writing you from orlando, florida. i was driving home from work tonight around 10pm and i was listening to "the drew garabo show" (i dont know if i spelled his last name correctly)his show airs on real radio 104.1 anyway, i turned it on just in time to hear Drew start dissing tori amos on the air. he called her a psycho and that she has tantrums at her concerts. i was somewhat annoyed, and although he is entitled to his opinion about her and her music, i think he was very rude about it and didnt need to butcher her like that on the air. MTV BioRhythm(May 11, 2000) - Ears With Feet Robyn reports: I was just watching the MTV program 'BioRhythm' and tonight's artist [May 10, 2000] was Beck. Anyway, there was a small clip on the show of Tori and Beck presenting at some awards show. [Mikewhy: MTV Awards I do believe!] Tori In Book On HTML(May 6, 2000) - Ears With Feet Rebecca Cordova reports: I am currently reading a book on HTML. (HTML Complete. Sybex, 1999). Page 138 gives an example of using INS tags involving the creation of a Tori Amos web site! Funny that I am referencing the book to work on building a Tori site...oh the irony :) "Gendered Lives"(May 6, 2000) - Ears With Feet Michael Weiss-Malik reports: I just finished a class titled "Gender and Communication" at Arizona State University. While reviewing for my final today, I came across the following in my textbook, within a sidebar in a chapter on gendered media: The Spice Girls may present themselves as little girls, but they're involved in some very adult ideas. Spice Girls wallpaper was recalled when the manufacturer was flooded with objections from parents who discovered Baby Spice's nightgown said, "F--- off." Defiant sexuality is not unique to Spice Girls. Girl rockers such as Ani DeFranco and Tori Amos advocate sexual freedom and fun for women. New as this may seem to the current generation, women's sexual liberation was a major theme in the late 1960s and 1970s. Most women of that earlier time later reflected that women's sexual liberation was far more liberating for men than women. This leads to the question of whether there might be ways of defining women's power that depart from traditional themes such as sexuality. It's on page 313 of _Gendered Lives_ by Julia T. Wood, third edition, copyright 1999 by Wadsworth Publishing Company. Bolt Web Site Question(May 5, 2000) - Ears With Feet Cherdy reports: At the Teen/College website, Bolt, in the Music section, here was today's poll: Do you think Tori Amos is a goddess?
(Here are the results, last time I checked (with 1,288 votes))
Yes! - 12% In my opinion, (I myself being a teenager) the other teens on this site need to educate themselves and step away from the TRL organization of music for just a second! Inmate Michael Patrick Moore(May 3, 2000) - Ears With Feet Mikewhy reports: I have found several news stories online about someone named Michael Patrick Moore who had a strange and unusual Tori connection. Michael Patrick Moore was an inmate serving two consecutive life sentences at Utah State Prison for some murders that took place in 1982. The inmate worked with computers at the prison and wrote programs for them, including those at Utah Correctional Industries (UCI), where he worked. The first time he is mentioned in connection with Tori is in the July 14, 1997 edition of the Salt Lake City Weekly. The article states, "A Utah prison inmate has been banned for life from computers after allegedly going on-line to send complimentary, if off-color, e-mail to female rock star Tori Amos." The article mentions Tori several times and you can read it in my Article Archive. In any case, More was somehow exonerated and he once again began using computers. His name appeared again in the April 30, 2000 edition of the Salt Lake Tribune shortly after he hung himself in his cell. This article mentions the 1997 Tori incident, as well as the mysterious circumstances of his death. That article is also available in the Article Archive.. I do not know any details about these emails to Tori (They could have simply been to her record company.) I also don't know if they ever decided who did sent her the emails. But it was odd to see Tori's name in conjunction with these news events. Thanks to Doug Smeath for helping me with this. MTV Uncensored(May 3, 2000) - Ears With Feet Tracy Streimish reports: For whatever reason I turned on MTV. I haven't been watching it that much lately. Well, "Daria" sometimes but other than that not really. They were airing a show at the time called "MTV Uncensored". It was about how MTV came into being. Including on-air mix/flub-ups, show connections to other shows, famous vj's and other "network secrets and highlights" (as DirecTV described it). And guess what.... Tori content! YaYaY! ;) They got aroung to explaining the "I Wanna Be A VJ" contest.... and Jessie Camp =| EEk... They showed the part where Jessie and Tori sang that Aerosmith song ("Dream On"?). Also, they used a still from that as part of the commercial intro/outro. Um. Tori was only featured for a minute but the show itself was actually quite funny! And informative. Jon Stewart and Janeane Garofalo were also featured. The show ran from 1:30 - 3:30 am Tuesday May 2, 2000. It might have actually been shown before and this time was just updated for 2000. I am not sure. I recognized certain clips were very familiar in how they were presented. Passions Web Site(May 2, 2000) - Ears With Feet EDMIR2 reports: On the NBC soap Passions website, Lindsay Korman who plays Teresa Lopez-Fitzgerald mentioned in an interview that she is inspired by Tori Amos! The show has has played three Tori songs so far. New York Time's Pop In The 90's(May 1, 2000) - Ears With Feet Joel reports: The NY Times Arts & Leisure section on Sunday April 30, 2000 includes an article on "Pop in the 90's". Alanis' Jagged Little Pill was the top selling album of the decade (13.5 million). "Devote followings sustained Tori Amos (2 entries in the top 1000) and, just off the list, Bjork and the indie label folk-rocker Ani Difranco." p.18 column 2 Top 10 Pyscho Videos(May 1, 2000) - Ears With Feet Claire Stigter and Brandon Sink report:
Tori was on Saturdays April 29, 2000 Psycho Night [in the U.K.] she made it into the top 10 pyscho videos ever! This was what was featured I thought it was funny she ranked above Marilyn Manson and Nin Inch Nails. I had a feeling that maybe Spark or Hey Jupiter would be in there. You can see photos from the Spark video on my Spark video page. Human Sexuality: Diversity in Contemporary America(April 29, 2000) - Ears With Feet marla tiara reports: My friend is the photo researcher at my company and in Human Sexuality: Diversity in Contemporary America, Third Edition, by Strong, DeVault, and Sayad, she found a small photo of Tori and a note saying "Singer Tori Amos (herself a rape survivor) founded the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN), an organization that operates a national toll-free hotline for victims of sexual assault." Tori's in a textbook! Wow! The Eugene, OR Register-Guard(April 29, 2000) - Ears With Feet treva reports: i found this little bit in our local newspaper, the Eugene, OR Register-GUard. it was in a piece by one of our local columnists, bob welch. the piece was a spoof on the gameshow "who wants to be a millionaire?", turned into, "who wants to be a mayor here?" the central figure was current mayor jim torrey, whom nobody seems to like, incidentally. anyway, here is the part with tori: "Ready? Let's play 'Who Wants to be a Mayor Here.' Jim, diversity is a i got a little chuckle out of that, and i was surprised to see that welch apparently knows about tori. most middle aged men around here don't seem to have a clue. Kevyn's Notebook(April 25, 2000) - Ears With Feet Erin Johnson reports: the may 2000 issue of "allure" magazine has a snippit for the sightings page. on page 84, in an artical titled "kevyn's notebook" in a section titled "listen up" kevyn writes of artist Jane Silberry's album "when i was a boy", "her beautiful voice and prose attracts fans from tori amos to nicole kidman." Crispy Creme Doughnuts(April 20, 2000) - Ears With Feet Lisa reports: I just had a really silly Tori sighting.. on Fox news they were doing a story on crispy creme doughnuts and how they are finally coming to California ( I knew there was a reason to live...) anyway, so they're showing footage of the doughnut-making process (like an assembly line) and all of a sudden I hear Tori singing Happy Workers..lol.. :P how goofy :) Tori's Music On Jennicam(April 20, 2000) - Ears With Feet Kirk J. Duchow reports: Just thought I'd let you know that the last 2 mornings about 9 am EDT, Jenni from Jennicam has been playing Tori and singing right along. She's trying out a new streaming feed that anyone can access, live audio and video. Yesterday was To Venus and Back and today was From the Choirgirl Hotel. Tori In A Local Paper's Food Section(April 20, 2000) - Ears With Feet Ann reports: I thought I would pass along this Tori mention in my local paper, the Boulder Daily Camera. I was very surprised to see this in the Food section. Don't know if your already have this quote or not. Chateau Tori "I have never chased the curve. .... I'm a small vineyard. And I'm not willing to sacrifice the way I make the wine to get into Safeway. You know what I mean?" - Songwriter Tori Amos There is a small picture of Tori, but it looks to me like a stock photo. Tori Art Print At Art.com(April 20, 2000) - Ears With Feet Penny reports: I was looking online at some art (at art.com), and low and behold, I found this print, which features Tori Amos. (Click here to see the print.) MTV WebRIOT(April 20, 2000) - Ears With Feet Meghan MQ and ThroughThePortal report: Tori's "Crucify" video was on MTV's WEbRiot show today [April 18, 2000] . I believe this is the second video they've showcased of hers (the first being Cornflake Girl). The questions were along the following lines: What Nirvana tune did Tori cover on the Crucify EP? Answer: Smells Like Teen Spirit The reason Tori's husband Mark Hawley makes her sound so good is because he is her:
1) vocal coach (3 is the answer) According to the New Testament of the Bible, Jesus was crucified on what hill?
1) Dru Hill (Answer: Calvary Hill) Tory Dent(April 11, 2000) - Ears With Feet Mikewhy reports: A dear friend of mine brought to my attention the fact that there is a female writer and poet with the name Tory Dent. While this has nothing to do with Tori, I found it rather humorous! You can find out more about her at these web sites: British Game Show: "Michael Barrymore's My Kind Of Music"(April 11, 2000) - Ears With Feet Carly Gray reports: I thought you would be amused at a Tori sighting. She appeared on a British game show: "Michael Barrymore's My Kind of Music" on friday 7th April. Teams are made up of pairs, and one of the rounds of the show has one of the pair with their back to a screen, and the other can see the screen. A singer will appear on the screen, and one has to sing a song of theirs, while the person with their back to the screen has to guess the person. Imagine my surprise when a picture of Tori appeared on the screen. Unfortunately, the guy looked really puzzled, said "pass", and carried onto the next famous person that appeared! German TV Movie Called "The Venus Murderer"(April 11, 2000) - Ears With Feet Christina Holly reports: A very little Tori sighting: On the german channel RTL there was a german TV-movie called "The venus murderer"(that venus-thing is coincident) and during the commercial for that movie (which they showed very often) they played "Hey Jupiter", and I was really surprised because Tori is very rare on german TV. Jamie Silverstein and Justin Pekarek Ice Dance to Tori(February 17 and April 11, 2000) - Several Ears With Feet report: The ice dancing pair of Jamie Silverstein and Justin Pekarek performed their free skate routine to 2 Tori songs, iieee and Siren, on Saturday, February 12, 2000. Many other people saw them skating to Tori once again in April 2000. Q Magazine and Bjork(April 8, 2000) - Ears With Feet Michelle Stone reports: In the April 2000 issue of Q Magazine, with Noel Gallagher on the cover... there is a very small blab about Tori. It's on page 20. The section is about Bjork, and there is a picture of Bjork, and then a picture of a woman with binoculars w/a caption saying, "I prefer Tori Amos". Anywho, I thought this was neat... the article has to do with Iceland's Prime Minister granting land to Bjork. Here is the article, if you wish to post this....(from reading this you'll kinda get the gist of the picture w/caption) Bjork gets "the bird" from irate Icelandic ornithologists.
The decision of the Icelandic Prime Minister David Oddsson to grant Bjork
exclusive use of Ellidaey Island-part of the Vestmannaeyjar Archipelago in
west Iceland-has enraged local bird watchers. They're concerned about the
implications of a bird-friendly nature spot, which has the second largest
gannet population in the world, being turned into private land.
Some of Bjork's countrymen are also irritated by the idea of the singer
residing in an abandoned lighthouse courtesy of their own government, because
she pays a significant amount of income tax in the UK, not Iceland. However,
Oddson argues that the gift is a "recognition" for her doing "more for hte
popularity of Iceland than most other Icelanders." The Internet Game "The Stone"(April 8, 2000) - Ears With Feet Alexis G. reports: I am a member of the internet game "The Stone" and a small snippet of the sheet music to "Baker Baker" appears as a clue in one of the puzzles. The puzzle is called"Subtext." I haven't solved the whole thing yet, but itappears to be aboutrockmusic. This puzzle is not new to the game, so someone may have alerted you to this quite some time ago but I did not see it on your sightings page. Music Hound Rock The Essential Album Guide(April 5, 2000) - Ears With Feet Bryan Cody reports: I found a book with The Dent listed in a section called web sites. I was fixin' to leave Borders book and music store in Winston-Salem, NC when I saw a stack of books, near the cash register section, titled "Music Hound Rock The Essential Album Guide". It's a real thick book with a picture of The Boss on the front cover. The price sticker had only $4.99 on the cover. It is an a to z book that lists information about lots of music artists. The Tori bit has a full page black and white photo of her sitting at the piano. In the web site section list in the back the Tori web sites listed are: www.tori.com The book is Copyright 1999 Visible Ink Press Blockbuster Training Video(April 5, 2000) - Ears With Feet Tracy Streimish reports: I was just looking over your updated "Tori Sightings" page and I reached the "Olive Garden employee training video" sighting. LOL. It made me remember my employee training video for Blockbusters...About.. a year and a half ago, when I first started working at Blockbuster Video in Peabody, I had to take a beginner's seminar to introduce you to renting videos :) It's tough ya know! Anyways, while they were showing the video, in the background of it, "Happy Workers" was playing while employees took care of customers. Tori And The Song "Strange Fruit"(April 4, 2000) - Ears With Feet Stacy, up north and Mikewhy report: There have been several articles about the Billie Holiday song "Strange Fruit" appearing in various newspapers and online sites. Tori herself recorded a cover of this song in 1994 and some of these articles mention that. The articles are in reaction to or are reviewing a new book called, "Strange Fruit" by David Margolick. (You can order the book from Amazon.com.) Here are segments of an article that appeared at Boston.com: Sixty-one years since Holiday first sang those words, they still disturb the soul. It became Holiday's signature song, yet because of its subject matter, it has long been regarded as too disturbing for audiences, black or white.
David Margolick's exceptional book, ''Strange Fruit,'' is a biography of an extraordinary work, the singer who made it famous, and its sustaining impact as one of the great protest songs of the 20th century. A contributing editor at Vanity Fair, Margolick parses fact from fiction, unearthing the song's history from its beginnings as a poem to its recent recognition by a British magazine as one of the ''10 songs that actually changed the world.''
Margolick debunks the most common myths about the song - chiefly, that Holiday co-wrote it, or had it written for her, a claim the singer herself perpetuated. In truth, ''Strange Fruit'' was written by Abel Meeropol, a Jewish schoolteacher in New York, who was also a political activist and composer. Under the name Lewis Allen, Meeropol wrote the song in the 1930s, at a time when lynchings were common....
Toward the end of a life addled by drink, drugs, and too many bad men, Holiday sang ''Strange Fruit'' less and less. It simply took too much out of her. She cried every time she sang the song, and as Margolick writes, ''she was too busy holding herself together to wage crusades for anybody else.'' Years later, others would perform the song, including Nina Simone, Cassandra Wilson, Sting, and Tori Amos, but Holiday's version remains the standard. I found another article about "Strange Fruit" at the PioneerPlanet web site, which includes these words: Over the decades, other versions have emerged: Abbey Lincoln, Carmen McRae, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Cassandra Wilson, Pete Seeger, Sting and Tori Amos all have recorded ``Strange Fruit.'' Because of its explosive, emotional edge, which all but guarantees an instantly depressed or morose audience if not also a weeping performer, many singers, including Natalie Merchant and Lena Horne, say they'll never sing the song in public no matter how much they love it. Amos won't sing it in public either. You can also see an article about this at USA Today that mentions Tori. Tori In Movie "High Fidelity"(April 4, 2000) - Ears With Feet Allison Palmer, Micah, Allison, Lana Helm and rea nolan report: A scene in John Cusak's movie High Fidelity has the July 1998 AP magazine with Tori on the cover!! This must have been intentional as I don't think the movie was shot in 98 (but I'm not sure on that). Anyway look for the scene with her, it is towards the beginning when he and his workers are in his record shop and there is a shot of a magazine rack and the AP mag is on the lower right hand of the screen you cant miss it. Tori In May 2000 YM Magazine(April 4, 2000) - Ears With Feet Nicole reports: Just wanted to let you know that tori is in the May 2000 issue of YM Magazine on page 78. She's singing with her hair frizzy and she has on a black short sleeve shirt that goes off the shoulders and it looks as if she has a dress over. very cute. Tori Item At The HARD ROCK CAFE of San Juan, Puerto Rico(April 4, 2000) - Ears With Feet Calacapusa (Kayra) from Puerto Rico reports: this is a picture of a tori item they've had on display for a few years in the HARD ROCK CAFE of San Juan, Puerto Rico. it's a jacket she wore on the UTP tour i think, along w/the autographed pic. i used to go sin at the hard rock cos they had really yummy desserts. and one day i pop in and guess who is right in the FRONT wall, next to the bar..... and then they ask for the EWF in puerto rico... there are many dammit! :) Britney Spears And The Waitress(April 4, 2000) - Ears With Feet Heathyr Holmes reports: I was just browsin' the web and came across a Tori sighting! I thought I'd let you know. It's minimal, but we all love to see where she's popping up, don't we? It's on Salon.com. The article is called "Uh, Miss?" and it's about the Britney Spears video where she appears as a Waitress. At this point, you can probably guess where the Tori sighting comes into play, huh? ;) The link above takes you to the entire article. Here is the Tori part: "Her forebears: new-wavers the Waitresses, Chrissie Hynde, playing the server most likely to hawk in your tuna melt in the Pretenders' "Brass In Pocket" video, "Gina" in Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer" (who "works the diner all day"), Courtney "hooker/waitress, model/actress" Love, Tori Amos, contemplating waitricide on "The Waitress," and Donna Summer, whose '70s stage-wear included a rhinestoned waitress's uniform." Christine Baze(April 4, 2000) - Ears With Feet Marla Tiara and Amanda Blum report: A featured artist named Christine Baze at boston.com is not only a Tori fan but is compared favorably to Tori: Christine Baze The first thing that you'll notice about Christine Baze is a similarity to artists such as Tori Amos (her confessed icon) and Fiona Apple. The comparison is apt, from her red hair, piano driven songs, and her tell-it-like-it-is approach to song writing.
Baze, though similar to Apple and Amos, manages to approach things a bit differently. Her songs are frank testimonials about life, love, sex and relationships. While touching on these subjects in much the same way that Amos does, Baze is much more lighthearted and comical in her approach. Where Amos is often mysterious, and speaks in allegories, Baze is straightforward and a little caustic. Luckily, Baze doesn't fall into Fiona Apple's trap of writing about serious issues and then becoming unjustifiably self-important.
Baze's blunt style comes off as beguiling and rather charming, rather than sanctimonious or indignant. That's truly a unique gift and because of it you could argue that Baze more closely resembles a cross between Ben Folds Five and Liz Phair than Fiona Apple or Paula Cole. She's got Ben Fold's sense of humor and Phair's knack of shocking you, with her own narrative flair.
Christine Baze plays with a semi regular lineup featuring Ben Thibault on guitar and bass and Greg Dann on drums and backing vocals. The band is fairly tight and seem to understand that it's Baze's show to run. The rest of the band's creative imput can be heard in the occasional funky bass-line or catchy riff that works well in conjuncture with Baze's piano.
For a group with fairly limited instrumentation Christine Baze and her band are able to get a fairly diverse sound and not suffer from the dreaded it-all-sounds-the-same-itis. Lyrically, Baze offers something fairly unique to the local scene. Baze's songs are crafted with a vibrant story-telling touch. Her strong sarcastic voice and playfully belligerent protagonists compel you to follow the songs through their 'story' arcs.
Christine Baze is an obviously talented song-writer and musician. It seems like only a matter of time before she makes it big-time. Her resemblance to Tori Amos may make the record label execs wary that she's just some Tori knock off, but one listen to her songs will assuage any trepadations you, or they, may have. YKTR reference in a comic book(March 24, 2000) - David Louie reports: Well I was reading through a comic book - Swamp Thing #1. It's a revamped version of an old comic called Swamp Thing and it's about a girl who is the daughter of the original Swamp Thing. Anyway there was a Tori reference in it! A YKTR reference, believe it or not. I stopped reading at that point and had to scan it in to share with other EWF. Neil was very much influenced by one of the earlier Swamp Thing comics, so there is a bit of a link there. The image is below. Olive Garden Video(March 24, 2000) - KeLLy Wilson reports: My friend who is training as a waitress at the Olive Garden, has been forced to watch some videos about appropriate behavior, serving alcohol, etc...she was excited to tell me that on the Olive Garden video, examples of Wine Magazines were pictured...including Wine X, with Tori on the cover...it was only a 5 second clip...but Tori is certainly found in strange places...even in employee training videos! It was played for well over a minute of the song. I was very excited and wanted to let you know. Passions must love Tori...they've played 1000 Oceans and Concertina twice before as you know...Interesting...;) From Edward: Someone at the NBC soap opera PASSIONS must be a big fan of Tori. Bliss was played Today, March 20, 2000. This is the third Tori song played. First 1,000 Oceans, then Concertina, and now Bliss. It was played when Teresa Lopez-Fitzgareld's(the reason I watch the show) heart was broken because her dream wedding with her love Ethan Crane will be coming true but with his fiance Gwen and not her. See made the comment that "The pain is worth it, you'll see."The cast of PASSIONS are going to be playing at a charity baseball game in my town Burbank, CA including the writers and producers. I will be definitely asking them to continue playing Tori!!! New York Times Article About "American Pie"(March 20, 2000) - Glynis reports: The March 19, 2000 edition of the New York Times included an article about the song "American Pie" and the remake of the song that Madonna did recently. During past tours, Tori would sometimes sing a small portion of this song as an introduction to Smells Like Teen Spirit in concert where it served as a tribute of sorts to Kurt Cobain. The New York Times piece is interesting article overall, and you can read the entire article at the Times Web Site. (Thanks Glynis.) It includes this tidbit:
