Matt Schmitt and Matt Myers have informed us that there is an Atlantic Records promotional CD floating around that contains a sample of a song from Tori called "Siren" that now appears on the soundtrack called Great Expectations: The Album. According to Matt Meyers, the promo CD is titled "The Atlantic Group" and is marked as Release 11. It has no promo number. It comes in a clear plastic insert with a front insert booklet that contains only some artwork and a track listing. The entire CD is actually 15 minutes long and contains 5 tracks. Only track three involves the soundtrack from Great Expectations and that track contains both the Tori Amos clip, and one by Duncan Sheik called Wishful Thinking. The other tracks are previews of new releases from Moondog, Passport, Helen Grimaud, and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Every track is narrated with a little information about it. At the beginning of the CD, a male voice says that all the tracks on the CD are new Atlantic releases for the month of November 1997. (Great Expectations: The Album however was delayed and was not released until January 6, 1998.) The "Siren" snippet on this CD is only a small portion of the actual song, a little over a minute and a half long. The full length version of Siren is 4:03 in length. This was a promotional item, and not something one could normally purchase at records stores. (Matt Meyers says he found it at the record store for 50 cents!) Matt Schmitt was the first to tell me about this. The Official Lyrics To SirenBeth Winegarner received a promo copy of the Great Expectations Soundtrack with a lyric sheet, and she was the first to send us the official lyrics to "Siren"! (These lyrics are also inside the CD booklet for the soundtrack, called Great Expectations: The Album.) The lyrics seems to be slightly incomplete, but they will enable to you see what the song is about and see how close the real lyrics are to all the guesses I have received from many people. Keep in mind that an official lyric sheet could still be wrong in places... Here is Beth' s email about these lyrics: The funny thing is, they don't give a complete set of lyrics for "Siren." But I think I know the couple of lines missing, which I'll put in >>><<<. Also, there are a couple of spots where she appears to be ad-libbing off the given lyrics, but it's unclear what she's saying. It is interesting to see the differences! There are also various comments on the meaning of the song Siren as well.
Some important terms and words have been overlooked in other interpretations of Siren. It's also important to know that this song comes from the Great Expectations Soundtrack. Great Expectations (the book as well as the movie) is about a young woman, Estella, who takes advantage of a boy's heart by using her femininity against him. In turn, this haunts him for the rest of his life and leads to his downfall. The first couple verses set the stage for the man's wounded heart and the way she, his Siren, has tormented him. He tries to deny the control she asserts over him by lying to himself. ("you're gonna lie to you") But he really knows ("know too well") her malignant effect on him. Tori chooses words such as "chill" and "break" to prove that violent effect. A Siren--in this song--is not an alarm, but the woman tearing him apart. The definition of a Siren is(Greek Mythology)a sea nymph who by her sweet singing lured mariners to destruction on the rocks surrounding her island (also a seductive and beautiful girl). A siren is a great metaphor for the girl in the song and for Estella in GE. The main part of the song is the moment when the boy/man turns violent (his downfall/"destruction" by a siren) because he can no longer control himself against her ways. He denies his obseesion with her again and criticizes her by calling her prissy and a coquette. A coquette is a woman who makes teasing sexual or romantic overtunes-a flirt. He's setting the stage for what he is about to do to her. I imagine he rapes her at this point because of the "almost pregnant" line at the end. He sees it as deserving after all her taunting. She calls for an ambulance right after he is finished. I imagine she is lying on the ground "reaching high" for her "cellular." He states "doesn't mean she's holy" because he sees her as evil and deserving of the deed. He's lying to himself again when he says she was "almost in love" -- trying to justify it or deny it. The "vanilla" line is surely the scent she wears. (or the way she tasted) That's probably the main thing he remembers from the incident--the sweet way she smelled that finally turned him to violence after her constant teasing. (The unpublished lines about not needing a light to guide through southern lands is about the rape--the physical acts of it and the evil involved. No light = dark and unholy. Southern lands refer to the lower half/sexual anatamy of a woman. "Go yes go" is when she tells him to leave afterwards and he finally agrees.) Deep, Tori, deep. What a match for Great Expectations.
i have a couple comments on MEANING of some of the lyrics...I agree on the whole abortion story...but see what you think of these parts... And you say...Kill I stress on the word Rights...this is what im thinking... She says 'and you say kill'...hence her response 'NO'as in dont kill your baby lady...a blunt way of putting it...then 'I know too well'... uhm...is it supposed to be Tori that is asking this girl? i hate starting rumors but we might ask if Toris had an abortion...'I know too well'...? 'no chill...' maybe chill is a word to express the meaning of abortion...as in dont chill your unborn counterpart...thats kinda out there...'no shield breaks' as in have no don't worry about your problems they wont break your shield...'no teenage pledge' someone mentioned pledge in there somewhere and i agree with em...cant be flesh...'no shield, no chill rights my siren'...this is why i think CHILL means abortion...ive heard guesses like she begs...writes...so how about rights...in other words an abortion doesnt is a wrong as opposed to doing the child a right...the child's right to live...is that too crazy for yall? also the 'meaning it all' line or whatever...'we made it up' sounds like its a word starts with a v, vanilla is the best ive heard but i dont know what that could mean...this is to be one of Toris greats i believe.

almost brave --as far as what this song is "about" I think we have to wait (oh the pain!) for the whole thing in January. But if this one is constructed similarly to ANY of the rest of Tori's recent stuff, then it's probably loosely about a few things. The sirens, duh, both a literal metaphor for the greek sirens of mythology, and also maybe what happens to a relationship when one (Estella, Tori, whoever) is playing the "siren" role -- death mayhem destruction, but not only to the "sailor" (Pip, whoever) but also to the control freak songstress too. She can't really love. As for the ambulance/baby/cellular phone part, it may just be free association on Tori's part -- most of Boys for Pele was like this. You'd be riding along on a thematically consistent song and then wham -- if neil could make her a tree or the infamous line where she's losing her cracker jacks and has a place in pope's rubber robe. I think it's important not to force a general meaning too much with these parts. Anyway, the song rocks. Definitely the Caught a lite sneeze and Blue Skies mixed together....I forgot who said this first, but it's an apt comparison. And it sounds like radio could really get into this one....maybe it's just what she needs before the new album is released.... OH---and this is the siren's song in the odyssey -- mind you this is a really "dumbed down" translation from W.H.D. Rouse (he even put into prose format instead of keeping it in verse---aaaaa): (after plugging up his men's ears and tying himself to the mast...Odysseus describes....) But when she [the ship] was as far off the land as a voice could carry, and going at a good pace, the Sirens saw us coming and raised their melodious song: "Come this way, most admirable Odysseus, glory of the nation! Stay your ship, and listen to our voice! No man ever yet sailed past this place, without first listening to the voice which sounds from our lips sweet as honey! No he has a great treat and goes home a wiser man. For we know all that the Argives and Trojans endured on the plains before Troy by the will of Heaven; and we know all that shall come to pass on the face of Mother Earth!" So they sang in lovely tones. From the bottom of my heart I longed to listen, and I ordered the men to set me free, nodding my head and working my brows; but they simply went on pulling with a good swing. Perimedes and Eurylochos at once got up and put more ropes round me and fastened me tighter..... -from book XII, The Odyssey, Homer So then Odysseus sails past and is safely past the Sirens....If anyone can find a better, more musical (especially considering that this is not just prose, but the song of the sirens!) translation, please share!
I know there are tons of guesses about the lyrics, and they (for the most part) all seem to make sense... but anyhow, here's my guess (incorporated with a lot of the other guesses I've heard, which I thought really sounded precise): you know you've never been lied to

But its "almost brave almost pregnant"... The last notes of the song are electronic- which makes sense cuz its got a big sound- and I actually like it- a lot of this electronica stuff has generic lead singers (or the music makes them sound generic)- tori is far from generic so its cool. More comments on the song- she does say beanie hello- (oops) but I think he says something like "being in love" in a really weird way and says "beanie hello" in the same way. Also- I dont think its like cornflake girl- its more like an exact cross between Blue Skies and CALS- it has that same new agey piano and kinda submariney chime as CALS and energy as Blue Skies with techno buzzing in the background. Whats online is basically the whole song with the same lyric and chorus repeating - chorus is repeated several times at the end and there are a few minor changes like "You know he's got a celular handy" to "I hope he's got a celular handy" and after a "beanie hello" she adds a "Siggy face" (?) in her chest voice si-GEY- face. The song is produced so well with violins, drums, keyboards etc and it all blends in great. I hope the new album is like this.

this may just be a hunch, but in "Siren," I think it's: never one was for a prissy girl It just kind of occurred to me because the cellular has a retry button.
As much as I love her, I have never, ever felt as close to a Tori song as I do this one. I honestly feel (and I'm not a big reincarnation buff) that I have lived this song before. I definitely feel the abortion theme under there and I think the reference to the cellular is sarcasm because of the song's time frame. I agree with most of the lyrics I've seen, but the only line I've found at a loss is the line where most say "and I lie so loud I die" I definitely hear a "G" sound in there, unmistakably. My first thought was a "some other girl" squeezed somewhere in there. Also, the "meaning it all" seemed more like simply "mean it all." I totally think she's saying "girl" rather than "kill" there too.

Dig in a hole This is my guess on the song " siren" I think it fits well with the movie cause of some references that she says in the song like " never was born for a prissy girl Could only care for this eggplant " she is talking about Stella character that she has to take care of the eggplant of the mother that she has. Another line is " our lives are not as high as I can see " she is talking about Pip saying this to stella that even that their backgrounds are different that the only common thing is love and he is convinced that she would change.
First we should explain that we also see that it seems to have an abortion theme. The last few lyrics are what troubled us the most - but came up with what feel are accurate. Meaning it all I'm still not entirely sure about the end, but I am sure that this song is about a woman who gave herself an abortion. Especially the part about reach high and calling for an ambulance. Maybe this is about a woman who wrote to Tori about her experience? I'm pretty sure that these lyrics come the closest of any I've heard. Listen and see what you think.
I'm Yuvik from Israel, a really BIG fun of her, well, I'm crazy about her (Aren't we all?) Anyway, like all of you I LOVE Siren, and it's unique sound. I'm Well Tori , you've got us in a mess again. We know that Tori is singing very gently and she don't pronounce all the syllables clearly, so Siren is a tough one. I have a background in singing and recording, so I can tell you that no one is singing there other then tori, it's her voice multiplied (because the "second" voice is too accurate to the "first" voice, so it can't be a back-singer). So, first of all, I read EVERY suggestion for the lyrics before I started my own guess, I'm letting anyone down. You had great suggestions, but I Heard Siren (WAV) in different speeds, like someone else did. Second, although I'm almost sure about my guess there are some words no-one can understand: The n-n-n stutter part? Come on Tori, What's that suppose to mean? Anyway, it can be the word Nanny, or plain n-n-n. "So loud up", I'm not sure if it makes sense in English "And you say GIRL", why would she sing "kill" or "kill her", we all know that Tori is using the words "Girl" and "Boy" like crazy, it's definitely "Girl"! All the Chorus is difficult because Tori is really playing with "No" and "Know", and we can't know that difference The Third part of the song sound exactly like a part in Talula (I got big bird on the fishing line .), maybe we see Talula 2? Anyway this part was the toughest. I heard the song a million times in different speeds, and eventfully came to that conclusion above It's not "one", she's definitely saying "Born" and it's not "Prissy" or whatever, she says "Poosy". Why should a cool kid call for an ambulance? I strongly believe that she says cocaine (a better reason, haa) It's not "Sweet Child", the "S" sound comes from the end of "ambulance". It a range of speeds it became Abel to hear the fast part so these ARE the word our True-Blue goddess is saying! I'm still not sure if she says "almost a prick again", it could be "pregnant", we'll have to ask Tori about that. And for the end: "Mini-Hero", guys, she says Mini-hero. She continue singing "I'm", but it's only a clip so we'll have to wait for the original version. Third, There is a funny echo in the song, it's a echo the rings silently one minute before the original voice is being heard (understand?). You can clearly hear it on the and (hear it loud), she softly rings "I'm", and the we hear he say "I'm", it the same note as the soft ring. Fourth, I have two suggestion for the meaning of Siren. 1. It's about a man leaving he r for a younger girl (Teenage flesh, she brakes my siren). 2. It's about a miscarriage of a baby, maybe a pregnant woman had something to do with cocaine so she is loosing her baby (never was born, almost pregnant, Mini-Hero). I just thinking about the "Siren" lyrics. I read all of the posted lyrics on your site and I'm in agreement with most of them except for the last line. A lot of people have guessed she's singing "Been there, love" or something like that, but it sounds like she's saying clearly "Me, neither."
I don't know what's been posted here about the sea-nymph kind of siren, but it comes from greek myth, where the sirens lured sailors onto rocks with their beautiful mysterious calls/signals. In his odyssey, Odysseus had his sailors plug their ears and tie him to the mast so he could hear the sirens' voices safely. Since the mysterious/hurting/beautiful/dangerous girl/woman character in Great Expectations was called "Estella" (the star), I'm wondering if her name has been changed in the movie to make a play on Siren instead, since the "star" connection might be hard to bring through in a movie.

My lyrics to "Siren" (what I interpret): you know, you know, you know you never lied to you... and you. WOW... "ambulance... sweet child.... held him in his tummy.... just take me home... i must deny him love..." "no, not you, no" she begs.... "she" being Tori's siren. Tori's plea. Something's not right here. I'm sensing abortion overtones, and her friend is like "no, not you, no"... she's alarming(siren) Tori...
I think it has more of a middle eastern feel rather than Latin... she does that trilling thing with her voice... and siren seems more middle eastern or harem ish to me personally.... but Tori songs always are very uniquely evocative to everyone who hears them...
I think this song is about Estella from Great Expectations, because metaphorically, she is Pip's siren; she keeps him from succeeding and stuff like that. So I thought instead of "teenage flesh", it might be "teenage witch". That's one of the few things I heard beside the "born for a prissy girl" part, which i think was born and not one. But then again I have bad hearing. I just think people should think in terms of the context of the song: why would it be on the Great Expectations soundtrack. Of course, there's always more to the song than the story, but as someone said, Tori always does her research on things when she makes songs, so the song captures all the energy that comes from Pip and Estella's relationship. In that way, it reminds me of Pretty Good Year. Anyway, I think it's funny how you have that quote about how the songs are more than the lyrics on your entry page and here we all are discussing lyrics.
Here is what I believe lyrics somewhat read...I don't believe any of us are going to be *pefect* until a the CD comes out...but basically I agree with Hope except for a few things. First, Hope translates "You know you n-n-never lie to you...I am the only liar"...and basically, I cannot find the "liar" part. Next, Hope translates "And you say, 'kill'" I think that there is a "her" in there, so it says "kill her". Next, when the fast part comes up (reminds me of the cool part in Talula) Hope translates "We try, held onto his money", I have no idea where this came from??? Maybe it's me, but I don't here it..what I hear goes something like this: "Reach high, held on to her stomach." I know that I hear "reach high" and "stomach" during that sentence, it's what's in between that's got me stumped. Then at the very end, Hope translates "Almost brave, Almost a prick, And almost in a- , In love, Beenie hello!, Beenie hello!"....I have no idea who or what "Beenie" is, but here is how I hear the ending as going: "Almost brave, Almost a prick and dead, And almost in...In love, Been there, love..., Been there, love..."....anyways thanks so much, Hope, you really cleared alot of things up for me!!! :) So here is how I think the whole song goes (actually...how it sounds to me). The song sounds very gaelic to me, with some gaelic words being chanted at the beginning...this makes sense since tori often uses irish culture in her music (donut song, ect)
I just wanted to say...maybe I'm weird or something, but that part on "Siren" where people have said she says, "almost afraid, almost afraid," I can swear I hear her say, "Almost brave, almost pregnant, almost in love.."
I see it as a song about drugs and an overdose resulting in a call for the ambulance. I also think its about rape in someway because of the line about pregnancy in it. I hope i'm not completely wrong but this is my best guess. You know you never lied to you

siren is different from any other tori song.....probably cause it's a soundtrack song and needs to set a certain mood that isn't necessarily consistant with what we usually see from tori, but it's just the queerest thing - i listened to it the first time and felt completely drained and empty and sad, but not in a bad way, if that makes any sense at all - like it's the end of something, like losing someone, like losing innocence, like losing yrself. there's one part of the song that everyone else is quoting as "no teenage flesh" but i think it sounds much more like "no teenage rage." also, i don't think there's a male background singer, it's just tori's voice layered.

almost brave i put in the oohs and some of the sounds just for clarification so it's easy to follow so you can see what i'm talking about. this version is not right...it's just my opinion. for those who are arguing that she's not saying "cellular", what about calling for an ambulance two lines previous? all i'm saying is it's consistent. technicalities aside, i should mention that i'm completely blown away and love the clip. definitely not a happy song in any sense of the word, but even at only a vague understanding of the words, it's already a very moving work. there seems to still be a harshness leftover from bfp, putting the song in a very dark place, but, of course, that's where we know her best. honestly, though, i haven't been this excited since the first clips of "caught a lite sneeze" hit the net almost two years ago. thanks again for everything, mikewhy, this is a great example of the amazing tori stuff that we all depend on you for. thanks. you or anyone are welcome to email me to let me know what you think of my lyric interpretation.

My attempt at some of the lyrics to Siren, and I hope i got part of it wrong, especially the sheep. But I like the Beanie hello, although I'm not absolutely sonvinced she sings that. The song is really amazing. I really like the song and consider your site THE Tori info center and I want to voice my opinion on the lyrics to the song. It's clear that the first lyrics of the song are not English. Either Tori has made up a gibberish chant or the lyrics could be a foreign language. Sirens, in Greek Mythology as most everybody knows, were introduced in the Odyssey by Homer. The Sirens call was a beautiful song that lured sailors to the Siren's islands where the sirens ate the men alive (very fitting for a Tori song, don't you think?) I have the song of the Sirens written in English, but the original version was in Greek, so I was thinking of how Tori ALWAYS does her homework on songs. Perhaps the beginning of the song is part of the actual Greek Siren chant, or at the very least, a Greek word. With the repetition of the "n" sound, I don't think it could be any type of English. It sounds like "MeNoYaNanananalaya to you" Perhaps the untranslatable part is some type of Greek statement because Tori says it "to you" She keeps saying "know she bites, My Siren . . ." as well. The chorus seems to go, Never was one for a prissy girl Like I said, it's just a theory I have and I'm checking into it. The Sirens are introduced in Chapter 12 of Homer's Odyssey and their song is written there if anyone else wants to research this. I only have a portion of the Greek translation of the Siren Song, but I'm looking desperately for the complete version.

After looking at the attempts at the Dent, and listening myself a billion times with headphones on and it very loud, these are what my guesses are for the lyrics: you know I'd never lie to you again the way never was born for a prissy (pussy) girl(?) I put the attempts at the Dent into mine and this is what I got. I also put them in so that they make aa bit of sense. Sirens, as you know, were the mermaid type creatures that sang beautiful calls to sailors. When the sailors saw their exquisite beauty combined with their hypnotic call, they seeked them out. Sirens, however, were simply lures that once they caught the sailor, they would kill and eat him. Similar to the Kraken except Kraken's looked like entire islands and after landing on them they would eat you up! I think the siren part goes along with the first part of the song. Lie means to deceive, but that might be stretching it. Um... I have no idea about that second clear part. I guess we'll find out in time. Also doesn't it sound like this clip is a second part of the song. The first being slow or at least just an intro. The tempo changes and so does styles.

WOW... I just downloaded the clip of siren from your site and I LOVE IT! Very original, yet very tori-ish... I love the flowing piano with the heavy beat over it, and the electronic noises in the background. The BG vocals are very cool - I don't think there is a guy singing back up though, I think it is all tori with her voice edited - kind of like the backup for the bridge of GIRL... anyways, very cool song, very dark... I can't wait for the soundtrack (and the new album!) You n-n-n-n-know I'd never lie to you

I really love the chorus that comes in at around 1:03 on the sound clip. After listening to it for a couple of times, I think the lyrics for the chorus goes a little something like this: Never was one for a prissy (?) girl.
I think there's more to them than the part mickey sun has mentioned. What I hear at the beginning seems to have words mingled into the siren song.. I hear "alive" in there. And then a bunch of "no's": no where never was one for a pretty girl almost afraid almost afraid and almost in a after the two almost afraids it sounds like she says somehing hmm, interesting, I wasn't looking too hard to tie it all together as
"almost meaning it all" begins to be the first of the new tori lyrics
I barely took 3 breathes (whatever the right way of saying it might be) during the first time I heard the song, listened for a second time 'cause I didn't remember what I heard, I was so anxious... and after that I was like WHAT! :-\. Third time came as I started typing this and I'm getting friends with the song . Just started 5th playback I kinda like it :-) it's sooo different. Ok time to listen to the lyrics now.. I won't go to bed before I get the lyrics.. this will be tough We know... didn't? lie to you ....all the way

I heard the cellular part...yes, something like "bet she wishes she had a cellular handy" perhaps? I think she says something about almost being in love or something.. Tell you what, fellow ears with feet, if this is what Tori meant about her next album having a band, I think we're all going to be happy! That song was just too cool...It definately sounded like the next step in Tori's music...or something like that. You know what I mean...Anywho..Happy day!!! :) |
