From Matt Page and the gang:
There were many surprises tonight. Tori performed Enjoy The Silence (solo), her first Strange Little Girls song on the Scarlet's Walk tour . The night has many surprises and was amazing. The venue was described as fantastic.
From Ste J.:
this was my third tori concert to date and second from the Scarlet's Walk tour. I was also in Manchester a couple of weeks ago. I am VERY happy because tonight ELEVEN of the songs were different to the concert in Manchester. I was only expecting a couple to be different so each time I got a new one I was over the moon! I took two work colleagues with me. One said it was wonderful and he'd definitely go and see her again, the other I've not had a real chance to get his opinion but I think he enjoyed it. The sound was better than in Manchester, but I'd expected that as this was in the philharmonic hall.
Ok, here's some brief comments on the setlist:
Wampum Prayer
Although I agree that it's recorded, it does make me wonder if it just might be sung live backstage. But if I was pinned down, then no, it's recorded definitely.
a sorta fairytale
I really like this on the album, when turned up nice and loud. Live just doesn't really do it for me though. Tonight's version was ok, but I think it's a song she uses to get warmed up. Last week on the Jonathan Ross radio show she did a superb solo version of this, really made me wish I'd taped it.
In The Springtime Of His Voodoo
Not a huge fan of this, but enjoyed it live.
Bliss
I really like this song and thought she did it very well.
Cornflake Girl
Good as ever. Love the piano on this and the little 'brrrr' she does. My colleagues liked this one as it's the one they knew most!
Northern Lad
I heard this one at my first Tori concert back in 1998 but I love it, so wasn't disappointed to hear it again. Sometimes I think she's not going to hit the high notes, but she always surprises me and manages it!
Don't Make Me Come To Vegas
Sweet Sangria
These two were possibly my least favourite of the evening. They were ok, but just ok, too similar to the album versions for me.
Wednesday
A feelgood song if ever I've heard one. Made me forget I was full of cold :)
Band leaves
Boys In The Trees
I couldn't believe she was singing this one as I think she's only done it once on the tour so far?! Was lovely. Made a bet with my work colleague that he has to buy me a pizza if he doesn't tell me by monday morning who the song originally comes from...
Enjoy The Silence
One colleague had told me just before the beginning of the concert that upto now on the tour she hadn't played any from Strange Little Girls! And then this comes along!
Silent All These Years
I'd been secretly hoping to hear this one.
Band returns
1000 Oceans
Done with the band, but nice and gentle, not overpowered by the drums and bass.
Spring Haze
At this point I got confused because I knew that this song was the end of the opening act in America! I was beginning to wonder if her throat was sore and she wanted to cut the night short!
Tear In Your Hand
Hurray, she wasn't finished after all! I love this song. She did it at Manchester too, but no complaints from me.
Crucify
I belong to the group that loves this version of crucify. Especially the final part, pretty impressive I think. My colleague also commented on this song, that he liked the way she'd mixed it up a bit compared to the album version.
Hotel
I almost hate Hotel! Live I quite enjoyed it but I still think on cd I'd switch to the next song pretty quickly ;)
I Can't See New York
Great version, very atmospheric.
Iieee
A song I also never liked much on the album, but this time I've enjoyed it live both times.
1st Encore
Talula
Growing on me more and more, makes me want to get Boys for Pele back out. Although not as much as the absolutely gorgeous version of Putting The Damage On in Manchester did!
Amber Waves
I'm sick of hearing this song (on the album) but I heaved a big sigh of relief when I heard it because it meant one more song that my colleague would know (he's been listening to Scarlet's Walk for weeks now). But I feared this meant she wouldn't sing Taxi Ride and he'd been hoping for that or Virginia...he was happy with Amber Waves though :)
2nd Encore
Black-Dove (January)
It's alright, was hoping for something else for the closing stages...
Black Swan (with band)
This was really nice. Wouldn't have minded hearing PTDO again or Hey Jupiter, but this was a nice one to close with.
Well, that's it for me. Wish I was going to Vienna or another venue in Europe! But more than happy with the two concerts I managed to see. By the way, I took my sister to the Manchester concert and up until Scarlet's Walk she couldn't stand listening to Tori! Now she can't stop playing the tape in the car! :))
From Susanne Helmer:
I think Tori's setlist for this evening was just gorgeous...she played Northern Lad, Enjoy the Silence (big surprise, at least for me), Silent all These Years, Spring Haze, Hotel etc. and a really great version of Crucify! Black Swan is a perfect last song...feels like a lullabye somehow... She said she had been in Poland the day before and that it was really nice...."but this place is still delicious". She also did a cute little dance before playing Talula...
From Silvia Klement:
like last year I drove with my sister from Vienna to Munich to see the show. When we arrived at the venue "Philharmonie" in the afternoon, we happened to find a parking right at the backside of the building. There was already a crowd of people and we thought they would line up for tickets. But actually they were waiting for the meet & greet. 10 minutes later, Tori arrived ... what a timing! Unfortunately, the security guys did not allow the people in the front rows to move back after they had their stuff signed. So people like myself who were at the back didn't get a chance to move forward. This seemed a little bizarre - one girl right before me wanted to leave after she had her card signed and the security guy told her off "Don't move!". I quite did not understand that. There was a barrier, so why shouldn't people leave whenever they wanted to and thus create the space and opportunity for fellow-Toriphiles to get a chance to see her and get an autograph. This was very disappointing, but anyway.
The show was brilliant. The accoustic was wonderful. Tori started right at 9.00 pm with the band: - Wampum Prayer
- A Sorta Fairytale (piano)
- In The Springtime Of His Vodoo (keyboards + piano)
- Bliss (piano)
- Cornflake Girl (piano)
- Northern Lad (piano)
- Don't Make Me Come To Vegas (piano + keyboards + wurlitzer)
- Sweet Sangria (piano + keyboards)
- Wednesday (piano)
Band leaves
- Boys In The Trees (piano)
- Enjoy The Silence (piano)
- Silent All These Years (piano)
Band returns
- 1000 Oceans (piano + keyboards)
- Spring Haze (piano)
- Tear In Your Hand (piano)
- Crucify (piano)
- Hotel (wurlitzer + piano)
- I can't see N.Y. (piano + keyboards)
- Iieee (keyboards + organ)
9.40 pm: 1st encore:
- Talula (wurlitzer + keyboards + piano)
- Amber Waves (piano + keyboards)
9.50 pm: 2nd encore:
- Black Dove/January (keyboards + piano)
- Black Swan (piano)
10.00 pm end of show.
I loved the show. Tori was not talkative tonight - she only introduced her band. She went from one song right into the next one. But with an amazing energy. I loved the setlist as well. I heard so many of my personal favorites tonight. Her performance was brilliant. We all know she is a hell of a piano player, but her singing blew my mind. I can't possibly think of anybody else who performs in such high quality live. While sitting there and enjoying the show I was so happy that I will have another opportunity to join Tori "On Scarlet's Walk" next week in Vienna.
From Anja (aka hali):
This is what I have to say on the amazing show in Munich last night:
First of all, I don't agree with Ste....Spring Haze, Hotel and Iieee are so fabulous live with the band! I don't listen to the album versions much but live....wow!
After an amazing meet&greet in the afternoon (my very first!) where she's been extremely nice and wrote down song requests on her hand ('boys'!! ;-)) we went into the building and admired the location.....Howie Day was great, his voice filled the whole room so I expected the sound to be very very good later on. But as we found out the bass was overpowered during the show which was a bit painful really, I wish they would have done a bit more soundchecking.
Anyway, Tori was lovely as always. She wore a checkered dress, jeans and high heel boots. And she was looking in our direction all the time, nice perspective from the right hand side of the stage really :-)
Northern Lad was the first highlight.....in my opinion she could have changed Vegas and Sangria for other songs but oh well....they were nice nevertheless. Wednesday just ALWAYS puts you in a good mood causing you to bounce back and forth in your seat.
But when the band left I was quite shocked....she started playing Boys In The Trees! I've always loved that song so much and I never ever expected to hear her play it although she wrote down Michael Heiker's and my request at the meet&greet. She just did it! Isn't she lovely? I really couldn't believe it, I was shaking all over. Then Enjoy the Silence...very haunting. And Silent All These Years, another favourite of mine! It sounded so beautiful....
The version of crucify was awesome, really impressive! And 1000 Oceans and I Can't See New York made me cry a lot, so touching and beautiful.... There would have been no better end to such an magnificent show than Black Swan......never expected her to play it either. She really knows how to surprise her fans I'd say and she's just full of love. I hope we can give some of it back to her by cheering, being at the meet&greets etc..
Cheers,
Anja (aka hali)
PS: Didn't she play Rattlesnakes at some point of the US tour? I don't think Enjoy the Silence was the first song of SLG...... (Note From Mikewhy: Tori has not played Rattlesnakes yet on this tour!)
