From Mikewhy:
This was written late at night after a long day, so please forgive any bad grammar and such...
The first show of the On Scarlet's Walk tour was filled with surprises. After seeing Tori on all 6 of her previous tours, you would think there is little she could do to surprise me. You would be wrong!
Tori performed for an amazing 2 hours and 23 minutes. She did 27 songs in her main set and 2 encores. She did 2/3 of the Scarlet's Walk album, or 12 songs from the new release. There was not a single cover or song from Strange Little Girls performed. I have never witnessed a Tori show that lasted this long!
From the perspective of the audience, Jon Evans was on the left and Matt Chamberlain was on the far right, with Tori in the middle. The show started with lights and projection of the woman with leaves coming out of her head from the limited edition version of Scarlet's Walk. While seeing this we listened to Tori singing Wampum Prayer from backstage. After that, the curtain either lifted or parted, and Tori came on stage. Her Bosey was on the right (from our perspective) and she has both the Rhodes and the Wurlitzer on the left. The Wurlitzer was red and sitting on top of the Rhodes. I am not sure if it was a new Wurley or the old one from the last tour repainted. When Tori played the Wurlitzer, she usually stood up and often propped her leg on the piano stool. Tori was very lively and energetic on stage, doing little dances and funky moves at the keyboards. She talked to the audience very little, but seemed to be enjoying herself.
Here is a brief run down of the songs and some of my thoughts. I was rather overwhelmed by it all (in a good way) so my memory is not perfect I am sure. Unless I say otherwise, the song was performed on the Bosendorfer. Tori's show began at 8:44PM.
Wampum Prayer
Some people thought it was from the record, but it sounded live to me.
a sorta fairytale
After Wampum Prayer and coming out on stage, Tori launched into a sorta fairytale. It sounded like the versions we have seen on TV, but sounded better and Tori seemed more relaxed. She also did the extra verse from the longer version, which was a great relief!
In The Springtime Of His Voodoo
Amanda and I were really shocked to hear this. We talked earlier about how cool it would be to hear it, and there it was! She played this one on the Rhodes, and then switched to the piano. This would be a pattern throughout the evening. She rarely played the Rhodes by itself. Most of the time she would switch back and forth between the two.
The band sounded really interesting with there only being bass, drums, and Tori's keyboards. Many of the songs very beat driven or bass heavy, and some of them had a very strong, almost tribal feel. It sounded different from what I was used to at a Tori show, and I liked it very much.
Bliss
She did it on the Rhodes and Piano.
After Bliss, Tori said hello, told us it was "good to be back in the saddle again", and then introduced her "brothers" Matt and Jon.
She then did an improv with lyrics that included the words "sounds crazy in my head, think I hear you." That led into
Crazy
This sounds really wonderful live.
Take To The Sky
It sounded more exaggerated and forceful than in the past, and seemed to extend the end by singing "Take To" over and over in a very nice ending. The audience clapped during this song. I will try very hard to forgive them...
Pancake
Tori started playing this on the Wurlitzer standing up, and later switched to the piano. When she went back the Wurlitzer, she propped her leg on the piano bench.
Caught A Lite Sneeze
Mrs. Jesus
She started this one with another improv (At least I think it was. For some odd reason that I will never understand, I thought the improv at first was the song "Bridge Under Troubled Water." However, I am sure I was wrong about that, and she went into Mrs. Jesus. This is becoming one of my favorite songs from Scarlet's Walk, and this live version reinforced that. It was very pretty live, and the band sounds very impressive during this.
Crucify
She started this on the Rhodes and later switched to the piano. The song had a long introduction that I don't think I have heard before, where she basically sang "eeeeeeeeeeeee" over and over. During the piano parts of this song, the tempo was faster and the song seemed more traditional. During the Rhodes part, it was slower and more unique.
Wednesday
This one is better live than I would have thought and was most enjoyable.
Then the band left the stage and Tori said that it was "just us now." Then I saw a large sign slowly descend from the top of the stage with "Roadside Cafe" written on it. Tori did yet another little improv that was totally adorable singing something like, "Look at this little sign" or something like that. Then the sign lit up fairly brightly and she launched into
Cloud On My Tongue
Amanda really wanted to hear this one and was glowing next to me!
Cool On Your Island
She whispered, "You may remember this" before doing this Y Kant Tori Read song. She did this on the Rhodes.
Cooling
Still no "Brambles" line...
Strange
This is one of my favorite songs from Scarlet and I was most happy! The band returned for this song, and the Roadside Cafe sign remained lit as well. This is so gorgeous live... Tori played this on both the Wurlitzer and the Bosey.
Concertina
She played the Rhodes and Piano at the same time on Concertina.
Sweet Sangria
This one was funky! She did it on the Rhodes and piano. The band seemed to really jam on this one!
Lust
I just adore this song, and it sounded great with the band. I kept hearing these odd, quirky noises during this one, and it really made the song sound interesting. I am not sure where those sounds were coming from.
Amber Waves
This is possibly my least favorite song from Scarlet, but it really seemed to come alive live. She did it on the Rhodes and Piano.
Don't Make Me Come To Vegas
The very distinctive opening with the piano (that is heard on the limited edition DVD) gave this one away immediately. She used the piano and Rhodes for this. The band once again was very powerful and driving during this one.
Hotel
This was the only Choirgirl song of the night, and it was a real highlight. The lighting was wild during this one, and the band sounded tight. She stood with her leg propped up and played the Wurlitzer, before switching to the piano and playing it very fast and furious during the fast portions of the song. She also lowered her head and looked at the Piano keyboard very closely during those parts.
I Can't See New York
She played both the piano and Rhodes at the same time. This is such an emotional and powerful song that really came across well live. One of my favorite moments of the show.
Spring Haze
A wonderful way to end the main set. After the song she motioned to the band and the three of them came to the front of the stage, bowed and left together.
First Encore
Virginia
Another MAJOR highlight for me. I was really taken by this song. It sounded so gorgeous and I never wanted it to end. Sadly it did!
Past The Mission
Tori played the Piano and Rhodes at the same time during this one. I always enjoy seeing her do that. She also played the Wurlitzer, making this the ONLY song of the night that she played all three keyboards on!
As she ended the song, Tori got up, came to the end of the stage in the center and then moved to our left. While greeting the audience, a girl jumped on stage. (Why in the hell would anyone be so stupid as to do that?) She was whisked away faster than you could say "Wampum Prayer".
Second Encore
Tear In Your Hand
This seemed to have a more driving beat than usual, and Tori danced her way back on stage to the piano.
Hey Jupiter
This was played on the Rhodes. She played the Dakota version of Hey Jupiter.
The show finally ended at 11:07. Everyone was amazed that Tori played for almost 2 1/2 hours and did 27 songs. We all wondered if Tori would continue to do this during the tour. We will see how Melbourne plays out. We looked at the official set list, and Tori followed it to the letter.
I will not say that this was the best concert I have been too. This is the first one and I will need to see many more during this tour to properly gauge it. But the incredible length of the show, the energy and enthusiasm that Tori expressed on stage, and her voice, which sounds in excellent condition, were most impressive. I think we all left feeling that we saw one hell of a good show, and that Tori seemed really energized by this new material and her new career with Epic. I can hardly wait to see how the rest of tour progresses. I am sure it will be a fun and surprising ride!
From Amanda Morris:
Thursday, November 7, the day of the first Tori concert for the On Scarlet's Walk tour.
We actually went in for the opening act, Howie Day. He was fine, but I was too too restless for Tori to come out to really even pay a lot of attention to him. I have a hard time with opening acts a lot for this reason. But I was enjoying our seats of front row of the mezzanine (the lowest balcony level).
After what felt like a long intermission, the lights went out, and we could hear Tori singing Wampum Prayer from behind the curtain, then Tori finally took stage. I was so excited and I had a perfect, unobstructed view of the entire stage. She was so beautiful. She had on jeans with a huge baby blue foofy shirt over it, and a matching baby blue flower in her hair.
Then she played A Sorta Fairytale. So far, it was pretty predictable for me. I was looking forward to hearing A Sorta Fairytale. I was pretty sure she would play it. But I did not expect her to play that extra verse that is only on the album version of the song since she had not done that version at all on any of the tv performances or promo tour shows. I was worried that would be the lost verse that was never played just like the Brambles verse in Cooling is.
So, there I was totally expecting to hear songs that were "typical" when the tune of the next one struck me as really familiar. I was thinking to myself "this can't be what I think it is" Then she went to the Rhodes and started the "vooooooohoooooooo" I was freaking at this point. I was finally going to hear Voodoo. This was one I actually kind of wanted to hear. And now, all except for Way Down, I have heard all of Pele live at some point. Voodoo was incredible, and I could tell from this song that was going to be really getting into the show with her music.
I still cannot believe she did 27 songs tonight. And that she played for almost 2 and a half hours (2 hours 23 minutes to be exact). That is her longest show so far ever. I don't know if she will be keeping this up for the whole tour or what, but I am so glad I was here to see this one.
She also did three improvs, which I have never her of her doing before. One of them I actually thought was some cover she had never done before, but it was simply a beautiful improv.
The first of the "secrete" time with her solo also had me freaking a bit. It was one I had wanted and had been waiting and waiting for. I finally got to hear Cloud on my Tongue! I was so happy. This is my favorite off of Under the Pink, and it was the only one from that album that I had not heard live yet. I was so happy to get this one and it was so beautiful.
She played so many songs from the new album. She played 12 of them all tonight at the show. I was shocked at that. I was especially shocked that she played "I Can't See New York" but that one was so so so beautiful and powerful and amazing live. It was at that moment that I felt like my soul was floating at the top of the theatre.
During the last parts of the main set, I kept thinking "okay, they are all going to leave the stage now" then they would play another song, then I would think they would leave again, then they would play another song. She just kept playing and playing. It was amazing. And the longer she played, the more I didn't want it to end. But she finally went off stage and I wondered if she would do an encore, but she did. A beautiful Virginia.
After the first encore, she went over the the left side of stage to touch people's outstretched hands before she left again, I suddenly noticed that Joel was on stage with her and thought that was odd. Then I immediately noticed that he was holding a girl by her upper arms. Yikes! Someone had jumped on stage. I had never seen that happen before. She was taken off the side curtain, and Tori came back out for the second encore. She fullfilled the only request that was made at the meet and greet of Tear in your Hand.
It was such a wonderful show. I got to hear so many songs that I really did not think I would get to hear at the first show at all. Usually the first show is quite predictable in its setlist, but I still like to go. This time every song was a suprise, and I loved it so much. I had even gotten some of the songs I had been waiting for for a long time. I also want to add that I think the bad was simply there for added background this time. In 1998 and 1999, it seemed that the band was much more dominated. But this time it really felt like Tori was the main focus, and Matt and Jon were there for atmosphere, and while I love Tori solo, they added a really really nice atmosphere to it and I enjoyed it much much more than I thought I would with the band.
I feel like I have just been to three shows. Wow. I still have two more to go to before returning back home.
From Natalie Ballard:
I attended the Tampa Tori show on Thursday. I sat on the lower level mezzanine on the left side of the stage and had a perfect view, so I can tell you that the strange sounds you heard during "Lust" was Jon Evans doing strange things with his bass. He would slide his hand up and down the neck of the bass, and the result was some rather alien sounding noises. It was an incredible show, and I as well couldn't believe that it lasted so long!
