Tori on MTV News
|
On May 13, 1996, Tori did an in-store appearance in New York City at Times Square at the Virgin Records Megastore. While there she performed several songs and answered questions from the audience. (Go here for more details.) MTV News covered this event and interviewed Tori as well. I am guessing that MTV showed this the following day, on May 14, 1996, but it might have been later.
This MTV News report was by Alison Stewart. They were covering Tori's appearance at Virgin Records. Alison said that some fans had been camping outside a long time to get wristbands that would allow them to see Tori give this special acoustic performance. Throughout the story they showed Tori playing Cornflake Girl live.
The interviewer asked one insightful fan, "How would you describe Tori Amos fans?" Her answer was really good. She said:
They also had a short interview with Tori:
They can get as close to you as I am to you. What is it that they want? Do they want to touch you? Do they want to talk to you? Do they want to talk about your lyrics?
"They want to tell me their story. And, uh, it's a bit humbling because you begin to see everybody has their own kind of experience with this subject, and you just kind of begin to start caring about people without being so jaded. You know, the jaded thing is getting a little stale."
You have a very specific piano that you play. Why that instrument and what does it give you musically?
"I play Bosendorfer because they're the best in the world, and because they're all made by hand. You get people's souls intertwined with the wood and the piano itself. It's not playing just a piano, it's like playing a living instrument."
They ended the story by mentioning that Tori's song Talula appears on the Twister Soundtrack.
