The Marginal Prophets sample ToriUpdated April 20, 2001 |

I found the following paragraph about a musical act called The Marginal Prophets in the December 15, 2000 edition of the Salt Lake Tribune in the Club Notes section: Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy: The Marginal Prophets could teach Puff Daddy a thing or two about creative sampling. While Puffy slaps some deadpan lyrics over easily recognizable samples and calls it a "new" song, this six-piece San Francisco rap-rock act samples licks from acts like King Crimson, Camper Van Beethoven and Tori Amos and name-checks such un-Puffy things as Utne Reader and "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern." Not that The Marginal Prophets are too intellectual for their own good; indeed, some of their sex-laced rhymes are absolutely juvenile. In a good way. The Marginal Prophets play Liquid Joe's, 1249 E. 3300 South, Salt Lake City, Saturday [December 16, 2000] at 10 p.m. I received further information about this from Toriphile Keisha J. Gray: I can give you more info on this; I'm both a Tori and an MP fan.
This is from the sample list in the liner notes for the Marginal Prophets
album TWIST THE NOB:
The song "C-Side": An incredibly funky loop from TORI AMOS. The song is called
'God,' and yes, she rules. Also '21st Century Schizoid Man' by King
Crimson."
Again, the part that they sample is the bass line, drums, and screechy
guitar from the first 30 or so seconds of "God." The song is a typical
"we're so cool" rap. The Prophets are:
The Noble Def G: lyrics, samples, phone calls, and paperwork
K^2: lyrics, samples, and cartoons. (K^2 is also known as Keith Knight,
who draws "The K Chronicles," a cartoon that appears at salon.com.)
Jamie Lemoine: samples, beats, sequencing, and overall musical
production.
The Prophets' website is at:

It has some samples of their work. They also have some tracks at mp3.com.
