Tori On Late Show With David Letterman
|
Tori performed "Bliss" on the Late Show With David Letterman on Thursday, August 12, 1999. She played with her band. Steve Caton was on guitar, Jon Evans on bass, and Matt Chamberlain on drums. At the end they showed Tori sitting with Dave, but the conversation was short and minimal. The performance in my opinion was excellent and Tori looked really nice! This was the first time Tori performed live for television since December 1998, and it was wonderful to see her again!
You can read reports from people who were at the Letterman taping, and from those who saw the show, below the photos!

August 13, 1999 - I just have to comment that tori's live performance of Bliss was just magical! We all knew "where the velvets" were....she was absolutely beautiful in her black-velvet dress! The band was trippy and ultra-cool--Yay Caton! And Dave was so funny throughout the entire show, constantly making jokes about Tori! There was a woman in the audience who was given a free Late Show Sountrack CD for playing a game on the show, but she was dismayed that it wasn't Tori's new album instead. Dave mimicked her whining and exclaimed, "Why is it that everyone always goes, 'Oh. I was hoping for Tori Amos' album' ?" Later, right before Tori came on to play, Dave gave that same woman an authentic album case for To Venus And Back, but without the actual cd. Too bad! I would've been horribly jealous! My only complaint was that Tori never seems to get time to be interviewed... whether that's her choice or not, it would've been something I'd liked to have seen. But Thank You Tori, It was beautiful and I can't wait until I see her in concert August 27th in Philly!

August 13, 1999 - Still on a high and won't come down for days, weeks, months, who knows? A more perfect day could not have been possible. Getting to the Letterman meet and greet at around 9:30am, I had some idea of what would be in store....the talk-show meet and greets are noticeably tamer and less lord of the flies than the concert greets. here it was the same, at least the one before the show and not after when hordes of people descended to watch rene russo and tori leave the building.
anyway, i'm getting ahead of myself. briefly, got there at 9:30am, already 6 or 7 people there. no number system of course, maybe it has some sort of place at the concerts but it's almost besides the point here. even picked up my good friend valerie (resident "rock on" goddess of DC) at port authority and headed back with no place lost. lovely, interesting, intelligent, amazing people i met for the first time: kelly, danielle AKA rasingrrl, and sean (see you all at NJ! you guys are fab!). then got to reacquaint myself with resident toriphiles william, zack, megan (sp?), eric, and a couple of others i know i'm forgetting and regretting it. oh, and met a lovely battleaxe of a woman with a slight chip on her shoulder who works for letterman and kept kicking us away from the stage door side of the street. yes, she was only doing her job, but she took evil, sadistic glee out of it. not fun. sean took a picture, can we immortalize this woman in the dent hall of infamy??
waiting, waiting, waiting in the fires of New York 90 degree heat til 3:30PM, when barricades were set up. no mid-afternoon soundcheck before TRL, by the way, people got misinformed. val and i luckily ended up in prime positioning near the front. still only about 25-30 people. relatively quiet, good vibe atmosphere. the band came out first in a big tinted-window van. tori arrived 5 minutes later, fresh from TRL, wearing the same bluish outfit which reminded me of an ocean, and which kelly remarked "that's so 80's!" later on. the meet and greet went VERY smoothly, she stayed out for almost 10 minutes (maybe less...i didn't time it). i got to converse with her for a good amount of time (among it thanking her for coming out with a new album so very soon after the last), and bestowed my gift of a book with letter inside. i was very happy that some people who never got to meet tori met her successfully and at length; it was just a perfect, perfect day. tori seemed so relaxed and refreshed after some time out of the limelight...such a calming presence in the face of such potential nervousness and anxiousness.
no need to say too much about the show itself....it'll be reported. i sat up on the far far left balcony with val and kelly....we tried to make ourselves known every time tori's name was mentioned, and we yelled "TORI" loudly after her performance. suffice it to say the sound quality was SO GOOD, that theater has incredible acoustics. after tori's performance, she was really chatting it up with dave during the commercial break. you can tell he really respects her.
and finally, we raced out and got to be in decent position for the after show meet and greet. it was VERY hellish though, 100 or more people surrounded the street just to catch a glimpse of rene russo and tori simply exiting. but tori stayed out for a good few minutes just the same, and she heard me complimenting her from the third row of the barricade on how beautiful bliss was and thanked me!
did i say this would be brief? oh well, best laid plans....afterwards, val and i said goodbye to our new-found friends and put a satisfied cap onto an incredibly perfect summer day filled with tori goodness....
August 13, 1999 - After the worst event of my life, the pre-show meet and greet where I did not even get a picture of Tori even thought I was the first one there at 7.30 am, my boyfriend and I lined up and headed into the theatre. We got seated upsairs. We were right above Tori. It was really nice looking down and seeing the inside of the Bosey.
All I remember was trying to yell my loudest at any mention of Tori's name. She seemed very rushed. In and out. No chatting as usual. Dave actually seemed happy to be with her again. If it wasn't for Rene Ruso Tori would have gotten to talk longer.
The song was amazing. I just sat there dancing and singing along. The beginning was so loud and bass filled. My little booty was rumbling in the seat. MP3's do not do the song justice. This would be the perfect song to being the shows with this tour. It was great. Tori seemed to get very into it in almost a violent way. At one point she was kneeling on the ground playing. As you can see from the screen captures, she was beautiful. I ws actually hoping for something tight on her. Yea!
After hearing this song live, I know venus is going to be great and I really hope she plays a lot of the new material on the tour.
