VH1 Hard Rock Live
|
On Friday, October 15, Tori taped an episode of VH1 Hard Rock Live in New York City at Sony Studios. Tori performed 11 songs, ending with an emotional Cooling solo at the piano. You can find reviews from people who were at the taping at the bottom of this page. Here is what she performed during the taping of the show:
God
Sugar
Riot Poof
Bliss
Suede
Precious Things
Spring Haze
1000 Oceans
Encore:
Father Lucifer
Concertina
Cooling (solo)
VH1 aired the show several times in January 2000. Tori did not get the entire hour, for VH1 also showed Beth Hart on the same episode. It debuted on Saturday night, January 8, 2000 at Midnight. I really, really enjoyed watching VH1 Hard Rock Live. While it was frustrating that only 5 of the 11 songs recorded were shown, what they did show was very well done. It is one of my favorite TV appearances. This would be a good tape to show to someone who has never seen Tori live before. The only stupid thing was when they edited out the word "cum" in Precious Things and "pussy" in Sugar. But they did a wonderful job with the program and I was very pleased! (Of course I personally would have preferred to see Suede, Concertina, and Spring Haze in place of the more common songs, but oh well...) They began Tori's segment, which was first, with a "backstory" section where they briefly talked about Tori's history and included some nice new interview clips from her. (I thought the comment about how you could hide men in the piano to be cute!) Then they showed her performance. The songs aired on U.S. TV were:
God
Precious Things
Sugar
Bliss
1000 Oceans
People who saw Hard Rock Live outside the U.S. did not get the interview clips, but they did get to see Tori perform Father Lucifer in addition to the 5 songs listed above!
VH1 in the U.S. aired Hard Rock Live again at these dates/times:
It also was broadcast several times again in April 2000 on VH1 in the U.S.
People in other countries who saw Hard Rock Live often got to see Tori perform Father Lucifer as well, which was not shown during the VH1 broadcast. This replaced the interview that appeared on the VH1 version. This happened when MuchMoreMusic in Canada showed Hard Rock Live on July 4/5. 2000. I also heard from Andrew Tavendale who saw it in New Zealand. Andrew says,
I was surprised to find Tori's Hard Rock Live episode screening late last night (March 25, 2000) on an obscure satellite TV channel. It wasn't advertised anywhere, so I count myself very lucky to have found it! But I was reading your page on the HRL show, and it says only 5 songs were played...well this version had 6, with the amazing version of Father Lucifer (with that Lucy Girl in there...) coming in after God (the rest were the same order). I wasn't sure if they played the "backstory" section first because like I said, I only happened to stumble on it after it had started.... It was screened on a channel called TNT, which usually plays old classic movies...
It was shown in Quebec, Canada for the very first time on Tuesday, September 26, 2000 on MusiMax (32). It was shown again on November 7, 2000 on Musimax.
The Netherlands saw it on October 22, 2000 on Dutch TV channel RTL4, and they as well got to see Father Lucifer instead of the interview footage.
This episode aired in Australia on November 12, 2000 on Foxtel's Channel 20 (TCM). The Australians also got to see Father Lucifer.
On November 21 & 22, 2000, it aired in Canada again on MuchMoreMusic.
I have over a hundred of my own photos/screen shots from the program below. Below my photos you will find some larger photos sent to me by Ben Mobley and Heather G. Finally, Annie has taken 104 screen shots and you can see them on her Princess Of Pain web site.

I must apologize to some of the people who tried to get into the taping of this show. Atlantic contacted the Dent and said they had 75 tickets to give away for the taping, and asked if I would do that for them. And I did. However, because a number of folks on the Atlantic Records list brought extra people, about a third of the people on the Dent list were not able to get in. I had no idea something like this could happen and I sincerely apologize to anyone who got a ticket from the Dent and did not get in. If I had known that was a possibility, I would have at least warned you. I honestly thought that people with those tickets would get in immediately as VIPs. I had no idea that fan VIPs would take a backseat to record company VIPs. This was not explained to me. I am so sorry and feel badly about that...
October 16, 1999 - Richard called me after the show and told me the set list, which you see below, and various details. Tori played from about 7:28Pm until 8:25. The band came out first and started playing God, but without the pre-recorded voice of Tori singing which was normally done this year. They were stopped by the show's directors for some reason, and then they started playing again. Tori came out and they basically played a mini-show.
Here is the setlist:
God
Sugar
Riot Poof
Bliss
Suede
Precious Things
Spring Haze
1000 Oceans
Encore:
Father Lucifer
Concertina
Cooling (solo)
During Riot Poof Tori was sticking her butt out and pointing to it while looking at Jon Eveans, who just laughed. Tori had done this before during the tour this year. They left out the entire last section of Riot Poof. During the "peach party dress" part of Precious Things, Tori started slowing down the music very slightly, creating an amazing and even creepy effect.
The end was very sad and emotional. Tori waved the boys off the stage and told the audience that she would not see some of them for a long time and that she was going to miss them. She then did Cooling alone at the piano. This was not on the official setlist for the evening. [Note from Mikewhy: I bet there was not a dry eye in the house after that one.]
October 20, 1999 - My friend Joe got VIP tickets to the Hard Rock Live taping last friday and took me as his guest. We were at the head of the line, so we got in, and it was incredible. I didn't see Tori in concert at all this year, so it was really special for me to be there and share the experience with ALL of my friends who had come from all over for the show. We all got in...I don't know how, but we did...even the ones on the GA line. Before she played Cooling, after she said, Okay Marcel, the one that was supposed to be on Pele, she looked at the audience and said something like "I'm not going to see a lot of you for a long time and I'm going to miss you." And I thought she was going to cry, because lord knows I did and it sounded like it in her voice. Anyway, after that she said something like "I always thought it would sound great to hear a volcano say this is cooling faster than I can" or something like that. Anyway, I got the set list from her piano totally by chance and it was soaking wet with the Evian she had spit onto it earlier that evening...kinda gross, but a cool story to tell. Anyway, it was amazing for me, and I just wanted to say thanks for all that you do at the Dent and everything.
October 18, 1999 - we (sarah, ali, micah and i) got there around 11:30 and had a reunion of sorts with some of our ewf pals from touring past and present. it was a very nice waiting period for me cause i met some new ewf pals who i actually knew through other people (kevin my borders buddy :) ) and some people i'd emailed with but never really spoke to. and someone who i don't know brought pizza over so i was thrilled! then came The Line. the most harrowing anxiety filled experience i've had in quite some time. worse than registration at my school. first we were in the general line which no one payed attention to. people just haphazardly filed in. after the first 20 people or so it was just mayhem. then we were told that vip ticketholders (which we were) would be taken out of the line around 5 to go across the street. well no one told us or i just missed it because one of my friends who was in the front of the ga line eventually came over and told me that they were lining up. i had been towards the front of the ga line and now i was in the back of the vip line. someone who i had spoken to behind me in the ga line was now ahead of me in the vip line. i noticed that alot of familiar faces were massing on the other side of the tent and about 45 minutes later, a guy with a megaphone told us that THAT was the line for denters. so now i was at the back of ANOTHER line. the organization of this whole thing was just rediculous. eventually a woman came and highlighted our names and didn't ask to see any id at all. i thought that was dumb. lucky for me i've got a weird last name :) by this point it was almost 6 and i STILL had to use the bathroom! now we were getting anxious cause we saw that other people were being let in and we still had no idea what was going on. eventually around 7 a woman came out and the line started moving. she took names and gave us tickets. the scary thing was she stopped RIGHT AFTER SARAH AND MICAH. that was like IT . we barely made it in. i felt sooooo bad for all the other denters!! then we stood in a little line of about 12 people and that was all that they let in. we weren't even sure at that point that we were going to be let in. but we were. unfortunately, we were all the way in the back of the "pit" section. sarah's tiny so she couldn't see. i know someone said that they reserved the front for denters but that didn't happen for us. once we were in though. all was well. tori was spectacular and every song i wanted to hear of the new album was done. i was very very VERY happy. i'm not going to post the setlist because that's been done. so, thanks mikewhy for getting me on that vip list and thank whatever diety is out there that i actually got in. sitting on the cement in midtown manhatten for nothing would have been quite annoying.
October 17, 1999 - Well I decided Wednesday night that NYC wasn't so very far and I wanted to see Tori one last time. Having no ticket, but lots of hope, the decision wasn't too hard ;) My good friend Eli and I left here at 3am and set off on our trip. After 5 or 6 hours we got to NYC and sat through morning traffic. I tested my driving skills by venturing into the city. It was fun ;) We parked near the studio and set out to wait. We got there ar 8:45am.
There were 4 people there already, and I got to see some friends again (hi josh) and meet some new ones (hi kelly and eric). Someone had 2 extra tics, so we were good to go.After a while (about 10 or so) more people started showing. We had to move across the street near a fenced in playgroud because VH1 wouldn't let us stand on "their" side of the street. We waited, chated, met friends (hi erin, and paul and carmen and long island lauren). We ate. Waited.
Finally some VH1 people came out and set up barracades. We stood at one side of the street in a large blob waiting for the word to line up. It was awful. It was like it was the starting line of a race. Well eventually we just ran to the barricades. Eli and I ended up about 5th in line, where we should have been. The first 10 people really were the first 10 people there that day, so it was ok. But after the first 10 or so, it really wasn't correct.
Waited in barracdes like cows for 2 hours. I went to go visit people in the VIP line. Was hanging out there. They had no clue what was going on. Was talking to a girl who flew from CANADA to get there. Finally I saw at 6:45 they were letting some gen admin people in (us cows at the barracades) so I ran back over. Eli was just about to give the guy his tic so I joined him...and coulnd't find my ticket. It was awful. I started crying and the guy wouldn't let me in without it. I eventually found it, but my god my heart was scared.
We went in and kinda just walked up to the front. There were about 50-100 people in already, but there was a space in the front row stage left (the way tori looks! although she was looking stage center a lot during the show--cameras and all) and we were in the 2nd row, right next to the stairs to the stage and in front of caton.
Band came out and played a bit. Caton and John Evans were so funny. They were saying something about how they should be magicians or something. It was great. Then Tori came out. She had on blue pants and some weird purple shirt with a strange poof. I dunno. Wonder if she picks that out. Started playing.
You could really tell she was playing to the cameras, but she was still making contact with the audience. Highlights of the show (I though) were sugar (she kept the pussy line in), Precious Things (kept the so you can make me cum, line in) Concertina (really powerful) and of course Cooling. Before Cooling, she yelled off stage and said, "Marcel, this was the one that should have been on Pele." I knew what she meant right away and i was so happy cause I had wanted to hear that all day. She said, "This is kinda my goodbye to you guys. I won't see a lot of you for awhile and I'm really going to miss you." She said the "I'm really going to miss you" in a baby like voice...it was really cute. She looked like she was going to cry. And then she played...
I couldn't move.
Afterwards, everyone was crying. No one spoke. It was like a funeral. People seemed afraid to make noise. We filtered out in awe.
Well it was Eli's first show and he was amazed. Thought she was really great. It didn't have the same cohesion that her shows normally do because it was so short, but it was good. A lot of stuff off the new album.
Afterwards, they set up barracdes around back and led us to think that Tori was going to come out. There was only about 20 of us, and it seemed really possible. Caton and John came out. Caton gave me a hug and said he saw me jamming down in front. They left. I had a feeling that we were just being fooled so Tori could leave. Yup. It kind of sucked though. I mean, if they had told us to leave and that Tori wasn't going to come out, we would have. They didn't have to set up the barraceds to fool us like that. Whatever.
Look for the girl with the white bandana and the red hair and a guy with a visor, orange sunglasses and glow sticks ;)
I'm really sorry to those people who couldn't get in. I agree that there was little organization and a lot of it seemed like luck. I was happy we got in because we came so far to see it! It took about 7 hours to get home because of where we stayed, but it was all worth it.
October 17, 1999 - Thanks for the VH1 passes, I managed to get in. I flew in from Detroit so I would have been majorly angry at the venue people had I not gotten in. I feel sorry for the people that got screwed by the evil venue staff.
The show was pretty amazing and we were treated well once inside -- we were given a comfortable second row. Tori was very gorgeous and I was glad to hear all those songs from To Venus and Back.
I was glad to meet a lot of nice Toriphiles in line. That's one of the best parts of a Tori show.
October 16, 1999 - well, i was one of the very, very lucky ones who actually saw the taping!
my friend and i left home at like 4 AM and we got there around 11AM. we waited and ate some breakfast/lunch/dinner down the street, and went back and waited some more.
i enjoyed the waiting and it was a great, friendly bunch of very cool EWF waiting with me. out of all the shows i've waited for, i had the most enjoyable conversation here (with the exception of a little brawl....differnt story)
when we got there, there was a few people (2-3), who had been there since 7 or 8, and then 7 or 10 more people TOPS. we were among the first, and we were on the "VIP" dent list.
VH1 folks told me this when i arrived in the AM hours:
- VIP's waited across the street, starting at 4 PM, and regular tkt holders would line up on the side of the studio.
- i was told the "band list" would get in prior to everyone else.
well, when 4-ish arrived and the VH1 people told us to line up, they told EVERYONE (minus band list)to line up around the building.
lots and lots of snooty, SNOTTY VH1 taping "regulars" came, who knew people at VH1 who probably didn't know who tori was. i was lucky enough to stand by one of them who had a large bottle of tequila in his right hand and a beer in his left. lots of overdone women wearing 8 pounds of makeup and....well i am not going to be judgemental. you could REALLY tell which ones were EWF in the crowd. they're "elegant"!!!
a bit later, 4 30-ish, they went along with the VIP list and took VIP's out of the crowds and sent them across the street. i had gone to the bathroom at 4 25, so when i got back, my friends had saved me a place at the front of that line, which all in all, caused quite the argument.
the people behind me were probably denters or radio winners, who knows? anyways, they were raising hell because myself and my friend went up to the front where the rest of our group was, and they thought we had "just showed up" and they had kept saying "oh, well YOU just got here 5 minutes ago!" (actually, um....no.)
so I, and some of the people around me tryed to reach some conclusion with these people and not much came of it, besides us all being pissed off at each other. it's not like i go to every show, and i had been waiting ALL day, they pulled us out of the OTHER line, that vh1 put us in!
perhaps it's my own view point of respect, but it makes sense to let those who have been waiting at the place of the show towards the front.
ALSO....a sidenote....
the line we were in, where certain folks decided that we were the biggest assholes on the universe, ended up getting moved to the other side of the VIP tent, wehn the dent winners seperated, and there was NO order.
when this happened, no one knew where the front of the line was and where the end was. it was chaotic, and everyone was walking around and the line was *NO* line.
the atlantic rep, MaryBeth, who had the dent list, came at one point and highlighted who was there and verifyed who had a guest. no ID was needed. she then VANISHED.
it was getting closer and closer to 7pm. the people who *were NOT VIP's were being escorted inside*
so i talked to the VH1 people and i said "i know these tkts we have don't guarentee admission, but we *DID* win a contest, and we *HAVE* been here as long as them, and we were told we were VIPs. i also told them that i was at the front of the general admission line, and i was taken out, because i had a VIP tkt.
my rationale was, why did they take me out a line i was in the front of, and then let them in before the VIP's?
so it was NOT their fault. there were VH1 employees that were doing everything in their power to see what's up, and the clipboard girl was very kind and helpful.....
so they were all wondering where marybeth went, and they said she was in control of us, and we needed to wait for her.
so FINALLY she came back, and took people by 10's inside. i heard only 30 denters would get in, but i think about 50 made it.
i feel terrible that denters came from all over with VIP tkts and did not make it in.
although, i am VERY appreciative of how they ran things for the ones that did get in.
standing in the TV studio 5 feet from the stage, i felt like a VIP. they had saved the first 3 rows for the Dent winners! i was in the middle of the third (the second was just an empty walkway for the camera crew)
there was great energy around where i was, and everyone in the audience seemed genuinely happy.
i will post more details about the actual show later, but here are some tidbits:
The band played a little ditty solo (aka without tori) for the pleasure of the crowd:)
they played the intro to GOD, and stopped.
Started again, tori came out. She did a cute litte humping gesture with the side of the piano, and went into god, fully equipped with some killer stilleto heels.
she had the dark tapered-ankle blue jeans on, and a purple top. it was a really interesting shirt, but hard to describe. it was loose, and had some dark purple, pehaps under a see-through lavender coloured one?
her hair was straightened and she seemed to be without the hair extensions tonight, it was on the shorter side.
her makeup was gorgeous......and there was a street side Kevyn Aucoin siteing. he looked pretty snazzy himself!
god had no a capella intro! but the sound quality of the performance, and the acoustics, and EVERYTHING was brilliant!
the mix was a little off, and there were sections of some songs that have LOTS of guitar, where i couldn;t hear it much at all (and i was trying!)
marcel soundchecked the piano right before she came on.
everyone was in tip top form! Caton, Matt, and Jon were all fantastic in their own ways (caton was without the norm wine bottle and glass...it was a dixie cup.....looked like he kept getting it refilled though:))
sugar was brilliant and pristine.
riot poof is one i've never heard live and it was fantasitc! the "it will all find it's way in time" part was *QUITE* different. jazzed up and she sang part of those lyrics but not the whole sentence like on the album.
the intro to suede sounded similar to cruel!
but it was, indeed, suede. it was, indeed, PHENOMINAL!!!!
perfection, really, the tempo was perhaps a bit slower, but GREAT. the little sister section was so pure and clear, and she extended that part a bit before the end. the end was hard to describe, but it was different and wonderful.
spring haze, i heard this when it debuted in Columbia, MD, and it has sure come a long way! and i thought it was excellent then! there was a seemngly new guitar part that was almost dissonance (or maybe it was, but i'm no music theory major!). very nice. Tori made some hand gesture to a camera man right by her piano at the solo beginning part, and i thought it was the finger, because ha backed off, but i asked soemone, and i guess it was just a regular 'ol hand gesture.
she was playing to the cameras a bit, but it was just like a real show, she made eye contact with us a lot too, and let the cameras do their thing. it was NOT like an unplugged/sessions type show where they'd start a song over, or stop for a mekup touchup. it was straight through, with no interruptions after "god".
i haven't heard 1000 oceans live previosly, and it was a treat, even though i didn't particularly hope to hear that one come out. her voice had this real warmth to it, and it seemed like a good ender, considering that we were told it would last about 40 minutes.
father lucifer was the forst encore song!
she came out and did a LONG little dance! she made gestures to us, and then to her stomach and made "pregnant" motions, and then shook her head (she's NOT pregnant folks!) and made "plus" signs and grinned devilishly and shook her little self around quite a while. the camera guys didn't know what was going on:)
then she did the "lucy girl" into and then lucifer started up....and it was VERY percussive with lots of neat little noises, and it sounded more like the sylkscreen remix than ever!
concertina was just about like the album, it was great, and i'm crossing my fingers on this being the next single:)
cooling......OMFG!
"marcel, this is the one that should have been on pele" looking directly at him. the camera in front of me stopped filming a minute and then started again, but i get the impression this song was for US and not for TV. she made it clear it was her goodbye to us americans, and sounded very emotional, and sad.
not a dry eye in the EWF section, let me tell you. the VH1 people must have thought the crowd was a bunch of quacks, because how often do they have a taping where everyone is silent and crying and motionless after?
it was sooooo special.
all in all, the hard rock live taping was brilliant. of the TV specials i've seen, this was very real, and i hope it conveys that on film as well.
October 16, 1999 - For those who might not have heard, a bit of a farce was staged outside Sony Studios in NYC last night which resulted in about a third or so of those Mikewhy had distributed Hard Rock Live tickets to not getting in.
Apparently the 75 VIP tickets he was given to distribute were not really VIP at all, and were instead more like VIP standby. As it was explained to the 25-30 fans who didn't get into the taping (including woj and I), when people from Atlantic showed up with more guests we got bumped. I suppose that this should really have come as no surprise, as fans are the lowest form of life in the major record label food chain.
Let me stress that I don't blame Mike at all for this. I'm sure he wasn't told that this would be the case and therefore couldn't tell everyone when he offered the tickets. If Atlantic had simply spelled things out up front I think some of us might have chosen not to take time off from our jobs or school and in some cases travel long distances to NYC (for me it was a three hour trip in) if we weren't sure of getting into the actual taping.
I hope those who did get in, including both the 45-50 people who got in from Mike's list and the usual clique of Tori fans who managed to make their own special arrangements, had fun at the taping and that it was a good show so that the experience was a good one for at least some of Tori's fans.
October 16, 1999 - Let me begin by thanking you for the opportunity that you granted me with the free tickets to the Hard Rock Live taping. However, I cannot express to you the depth of my disappointment. I live in Philadelphia and it took about 3.5 hours to get to New York...I'm aware that there were many people who travelled even further than that. Well, I arrived at the Sony Studios around 6:45pm...still before the taping began. However, at the blue tent where the list of our names for the VIP tickets...there were about 20 or so people still waiting there from 5pm on. I think that a few VIP winners from the Dent were actually given their tickets and allowed inside. However, at some point vh1decided that VIP didn't mean squat. other vh1 representatives claimed that they were not aware of a online webpage givaway of the tickets until just before the show. they told the rest of us in line that we were NOT going to be able to go into see the show because they already filled the studio and due to firehazard restrictions, they were not allowed to grant us our supposed "guaranteed VIP status admittance"?!?!?! They also informed us that certain executives brought extra guests, therefore bumping out VIPs?! And then it was rumored that a handful of STANDBYS were let in as well?!
An apology to the fans. A sign of good faith. A good will gesture. Wasn't that the idea behind these "VIP" complimentary tickets issued by Atlantic Records themselves? I am certain that if any of us had known that there was a possibility that we were not going to be guaranteed admittance, that many of us would not have gone through the trouble of re-arranging schedules (work and school) to only be given the shaft once again at the last moment's notice. And to have them claim that they were not involved or responsible for our loss? guaranteed or no? don't get me wrong, i appreciate the gift of actually having the opportunity to see tori for free. However, it was still a truly heartbreaking ordeal to go through -- emotionally and physically. I really don't know where the misunderstanding actually began. I cannot even express the depth of my disappointment. I am truly hurt beyond words. My time and hopes were wasted...and cast aside in the most frivolous manner. I understand the firehazard situation, however I cannot understand how we were bumped out in the first place. I have to say that the part of me that is not saddened by the loss is outraged.
But what can we possibly do about it? It was a free gift...nothing is for free. How did this happen? What does VIP mean, what was the actual status of "guaranteed admittance"? "perferred admittance"?
I mean, I'm 23. I have a career and a car..and i lived relatively closer to NY than alot of the people out there. But there were 13 and 16 yr olds sitting there completely in shock...with their parents shaking their heads in pity and resignment. Really, I have to ask you because you were our contact...I realize that you have no control or responsibility concerning this entire setup/situation...
however, perhaps you know who we could contact to express our dissatifaction and our weariness of repeated disappointment unhappily connected with Tori.
October 16, 1999 - Well, Hard Rock Live was pretty disappointing, not because of Tori, but because I didn't get to see her. Anyway, I got there around 1:00 PM and there were around 30 people waiting already, sitting on the sidewalk and just talking etc., and I went up to these official looking people sitting under a blue tent and asked about the tickets the DENT had given out, and they told us that we were going to start lining up at around four o'clock. Four o'clock rolled around and they had set up these barricades across the street, and they told us we could go line up, so there was a mad rush for them with people going under them etc. While waiting in line I met some other people who had gotten their tickets from the DENT too and they didn't know what was happening either, we thought someone was going to be coming around and taking our names, but that didn't happen and somehow we found out that people who had won the tickets were waiting in a different line across the street by another blue tent that had been set up, so we went there and waited. And then, after waiting for like 1/2 an hour we were told that the DENT winners were waiting on another line on the other side of the blue tent, so we went there and waited. Around 5:30 or 6:00 a blond lady with a clip board came around asking for our names and we were checked off, and it all seemed to be going well, and they started letting some people in, I'm not really sure, I couldn't really see across the street because of these trucks etc. Anyway, around 7:00 or something like that, they started taking the people who got their tickets from the DENT in, and I thought, oh good, we get to go in now, but then they took the people standing in front of me and my friend and they said to wait there and that they'd come back, but the thing is they never did. Instead this guy came around like 20 minutes later saying that anyone who didn't have a ticket physically (because they hadn't handed out tickets) couldn't go in because the venue was full!!! I had other friends who were waiting on the general admission lines and they didn't get to go in either, they said that only like 20 people in general admission were let in. It was just very disoraganized and confusing, it seemed like none of the people running the audience knew what was going on, when I tried to ask someone what was going on they just sent me to someone else. And so, after waiting all day, I didn't get to see Tori and couldn't do anything about it. So it was pretty frustrating. It would have been nice if Hard Rock Live had actually counted how many tickets they had given out for this thing because the venue is supposed to be pretty small. So over all a pretty sucky experience.
