Geraldo Rivera show February 28, 1997

Tori was interviewed briefly on Geraldo Rivera's talk show Friday, February 28, 1997. I have some photos of this appearance and reports from two Ears With Feet below. This same interview with Tori was reportedly shown again during a different Geraldo show in late March 1997.

Lisa reports:

"i missed the very beginning, so i dont know what the topic of the show was, but i think it was some sort of Grammy thing. i didnt see the lead in to the segment, but i got a clip of the Hey Jupiter video, a blank spot where my vcr..um.. adjusted itself, and the following interview, (it was on tape.. she wasn't really there) which really only lasted a few minutes.

Geraldo asked a question at the same moment i hit record, and im sorry, but i dont remember what it was...

Tori: ... but I've had people to help me do that. Where do you begin when a 14 year old comes up to you and says my father raped me last night, my father will rape me tomorrow night, and when i get home tonight, he'll rape me. My father, my step-father, my uncle, my brother... I mean, its the same story.

Geraldo: Doesn't it infuriate you that the issue, having evolved and now come out of the closet, is now being exploited and abused by psuedo-victims? Those who would posture themselves as having been vicitimized when indeed they were just using it as leverage either in a divorce action, a custody battle, or to get publicity? Like this Dallas Cowboys incident...

Tori: Well, you realize that anybody that's there in their mind is not ok. Anybody who does that needs help on another level. Thats a different cry for help. You see, whenever you have to..Go there, to do something like that, there's not balance there. So there's a different problem there. (points to her head) So somebody has to go.. (sighs).. she needs some help.

Geraldo: Doesnt it set back the whole, you know, movement in a sense?

Tori: No. I dont believe that. I think, Geraldo, um.. things that... stones are being turned over everyday that are not in balance or in truth. And, for whatever reason, if youre...(sigh).. um, if youre in pain, it can come out in very strange ways. To me, thats a person thats in a lot of pain. Whatever they're doing... what Anger you have to do that... theres a lot of pain out there and i think its coming out in all sorts of ways right now.

Geraldo: i really like her, and she's working hard for this whole cause, the Rape, Abuse Nationwide Network (his mistake, not mine) I think she got robbed. Dont you think she got robbed?

Flo, a person on the panel i didnt know.. columnist maybe? : Yeah. Last night Courtney Love said Tori Amos got robbed. In fact, she says that shes going to get 100 people to join NARAS(?) becuase she doesnt know whos voting. She said lawyers are voting.

... back and forth over who actually did win... Geraldo came up with Beck.

Geraldo: well, Beck's pretty good, But Tori Amos should have won.

Karen reports:

Hey! A little while ago my mom was watching the Geraldo Rivera show, and, to my surprise, Tori was on! They showed a clip from the Hey Jupiter video (which I've never seen) and a short clip from a prerecorded interview. She talked about RAINN. Afterwards, Geraldo said that he really likes her, and that he thought she should've won the Grammy. (I agree!!) Also, they said that Courtney Love thought that Tori had been robbed of the grammy. Needless to say, I have just gained a new respect for Courtney!
