TORI AMOS: STRANGE LITTLE GIRLS (Atlantic) Cover versions - sorry,
reinterpretations - of 12 songs by men, from The Velvet Underground's New
Age to Joe Jackson's Real Men, taking in Eminem's '97 Bonnie & Clyde, Neil
Young's Heart Of Gold and even Slayer's Raining Blood. The story is this:
"Let's see if these man songs change if a woman sings them." Listen, it's an
angle and we all need an angle, but I can't see the point. The song's the
song. The problem is the problem with all covers projects. If you liked the
original, you can't help but feel: why mess with it? And if you hate the
original (say, 10cc's I'm Not In Love), you're still going to hate the song.
Still, Amos's versions are creative and inventive and, concept aside, it's
beguiling enough.
