Tori Amos
Scarlet's Walk
No one could ever
accuse Tori Amos of following anything other than her own inscrutable
vision.
"Scarlet's
Walk," Amos' 7th album, is an ambitious, loosely formulated
response to Sept. 11, told conceptually via a road trip across
America infused with Amos' usual fascination with fantasy and
mythology.
If that all sounds a
little too diffuse, it is, and for every pretty song like "A
Sorta Fairytale" or "Crazy," there are a number of
interchangeable mid-tempo tracks that inevitably get bogged down by
the weighty (and admittedly unwieldy) concept.
Fans will eat it up,
but there's both too much and too little going on to successfully
digest the disc and see it as the serious artistic statement it's
intended to be.
