The Friday, August 27, 1999 weekend edition of USA Today included a few mentions of the 5 1/2 Weeks Tour and "to venus and back" along with a nice and recent black and white photo of Tori. It was part of an article about new music coming out for Fall 1999. You can see the photo below. Thanks to Richard Green III for sending it to me, and to Karla Canales for also telling me about the article. The text of the article did not tell us anything we did not already know, but it was nice to see Tori mentioned so prominently!

"Live & Unrehearsed" Webcast
August 16, 1999
Mikewhy here reporting live from Nashville, TN, my first stop on the way to Ft. Lauderdale! I am at my friend Danica's house, and earlier in the evening we watched the video webcast "Live And Unrehearsed." I must say I was really pleased with it! It lasted for about an hour and fifteen minutes. Tori answered a bunch of questions, and seemed to be in a good mood. She also sang 7 songs live. Thanks to Danica, I have a few screen shots from the webcast, and you can see them here. You can also read a few comments on the event.

Chicago Tribune
August 6, 1999

The August 6, 1999 edition of the Chicago Tribune included an article by critic Greg Kot titled "Rock's Top 10 Live Performers in the '90s". Tori made #10 on the list! Special thanks to Krissy for telling me.

The Tori part of the article said:

"The piano hasn't sounded this erotic as a rock'n'roll instrument since Jerry Lee Lewis was in full leer. Amos amazes because her technique affirms her years of conservatory training, even as her splayed legs, grinding hips and cascading crimson hair openly rebel against it. While celebrating sexuality with her physical presence, her songs ruminate over its complexities."

The other members of the list (in order from #1-9) were : The Jesus Lizard, The Artist formerly known as Prince, Jeff Buckley, PJ Harvey, Ani DiFranco, Alejandro Escovedo, Moby, Neil Young and The Waco Brothers.

New York Times
August 2, 1999
An interesting New York Times article by Ann Powers called "A Surge of Sexism on the Rock Scene" appeared on August 2, 1999. This article is responding in part to the violence and rapes that occured at the Woodstock '99 festival. Tori is mentioned a few times in the article, and I found it an interesting and disturbing read overall. You can read this article at the New York Times web site or in my Article Archives. (The New York Times web site requires you to subscribe first, although it is free. Their version is better because it includes a non-Tori photo, better formatting, and related links.)

Teen People Magazine
August 1999

The August 1999 issue of Teen People Magazine (with Will Smith on the cover) includes a small advertisement for nail polish near the back which includes a small Tori picture on the top right of the text which says:

    Nails in Space
With names like Comet, Meteorite, and Atomic,
these H20 Plus polishes ($7 each) are out of
this world. The cosmic sparkle is sure to appeal
to Tori Amos, a fan of the line. 800-242-2284
