Tori's Name Seen In New York Times Article Called "ON TOP OF POP, BUT NOT WITH ONE VOICE"

(June 30) - Toriphile Mike Gonzalez reported to various mailing lists:

The New York Times Arts & Leisure section for Sunday, June 29, 1997 has a story by Neal Karlen titled ON TOP OF POP, BUT NOT WITH ONE VOICE.

    The following people are mentioned:

    Paula Cole
    Meredith Brooks
    Fiona Apple
    Jewel
    Erykah, Badu
    Monica
    No Doubt
    Fugees
    Le-Ann Rimes
    Cardigans
    Mary Chapin-Carpenter
    Sarah McLachlan
    Tori Amos
    Spice Girls
Susan James (dubbed as the new Ani DiFranco)
    Ani DiFranco
and the Lilith Fair is mentioned a few times.

There are nice pictures of Paula Cole, Jewel, Erykah Badu, Gwen Stefani, Monica, Nina Persson, Meredith Brooks and Sarah McLachlan.

For all those without any access to a New York Times, you can read the article at their website at http://www.nytimes.com. [Do a search on the author Neal Karlen and look for the article's title or try looking in the Arts & Leisure section. You will have to register for free to make full use of this web site.]

Here is the part of the article that mentions Tori. It involves a well-known quote from Sarah:

"Still, it's hardly news that women view the record business as an exclusive, impenetrable boys' club. 'You're crazy, nuts and out of your mind if you want to have Paula Cole open for you,' Ms. McLachlan recalls one music promoter barking at her when she was putting together her own tour last year. 'Who taught you the music business? Don't you know you can never have two women on the same bill, that nobody wants to pay to see that?'

Ms. McLachlan prevailed, but the incident was central to her decision to organize Lilith. "Radio promoters are the same way," said Ms. McLachlan. "They say, 'We can't add your song to our playlist, because we just added Tori Amos last week.' "

Sarah Mentions Tori In Lilith Fair Article In Newsweek

(June 30) - Toriphiles Jenny G and Kingmob46 report:

In the June 30th Newsweek, there is a section on pgs 72-73 about Lillith Fair with pictures of Sarah McLachlan, Paula Cole, and Jewel. Not only does the article mention Jenny's undergrad college, BARD COLLEGE, but it has the quote that we have seen before from sarah:

Moreover, the tour's financial success is bound to give female performers added clout in a business that continually marginalizes them. "My last record came out at the same time as Tori Amos," says McLachlan. "I was constantly getting pitted against her. Radio said, 'we added Tori this week, so we can't add you.' They never said, 'We added pearl jam, so we can't add nirvana'."

Jewel Article In Toronto Magazine Compares Her To Tori

(June 30) - Toriphile KiteGrrl reports:

I was doing a net search earlier, looking for lyrics to a Jewel song for one of my friends, and I got to reading articles, just to see if Jewel was anything like Tori in what she said. She's not. Anyway, there was this one, from Now Magazine (Toronto's weekly news and entertainmet mag) and this little gem here caught my eye.

"Sounding not unlike TORI AMOS in her pleas for understanding and love, Jewel warms up as she recalls anecdotes from her paradoxical naive/ experience persona."

Emily Saliers Of The Indigo Girls Wants Her Little Earthquakes!

(June 25) - Ventrue reports to the ToriNews mailing list:

"In this month's issue of PULSE, the free tower-records 'zine (so, obviously, it's available free at Tower Records :)), there's an interview with the indigo girls, Emily Saliers and Amy Ray. in it, my personal fave Indigo, Emily, lists Little Earthquakes as one of the 10 cd's she'd want to have if stranded on a desert island......in case you're wondering, some of her other picks included Wave by Patti Smith and Hejira by Joni Mitchell."

Tori Mentioned on 'Kwik Witz'

(June 24) - Mike Harris reports:

"'Kwik Witz' is a show that airs in the Chicagoland area after 'Saturday Night Live' in which two teams of comedy professionals are challenged to perform improvisational sketches and are then rated by the audience on how funny they are; the team that is rated highest by the end of the game wins. On the June 7th [1997] episode, the teams were challenged to create an advertisement for a new cable channel. One team chose to create a channel called 'Compact Disc Television,' in which famous musicians were inserted into popular sitcoms. Among the series these comedians created were "E.R.E.M.", "The Fresh Artist Formerly Known as Prince of Bel-Air", and ... ... "Tori Amos and Andy."

"Self" Magazine Mentions Tori

(June 23) - Cathi reports:

"I was reading this article in Self magazine (the June 1997 issue, I believe) about mating between people and how the longevity of your relationships depends on what examples you have had growing up (basically a watered down Psychology Today article). And it was weird- I don't have the exact quote, but it said something to the affect of 'We have had musicians singing about it for years, from Cole Porter to Tori Amos'. I just found it really interesting, since I don't think that Tori is traditionally thought of as a love song singer (that almost made sense)- I figured that the author was either a big Tori fan trying to promote her, or someone who knew absolutely nothing about her and was at a loss for other examples."

Tori Did Well On Radio Station CFNY In Canada

(June 23) - An anonymous Toriphile reports:

"By the way, I just happened to notice that according to Billboard in the states, the singles for "Boys For Pele" (with the exception of Armand Van Heldon's remixes) did poorly in the States. [chartwise]

Not so in Canada. CFNY, Canada's biggest "mainstream alternative" station, had "Caught A Lite Sneeze" peak at #1 for two weeks in March 7th and March 14th [1996], on their Thursday 30 (it's a vote for the song sort of thing)."

"Performing Songwriter" Mentions Tori In Laura Nyro Article and Spotlights The Bottom Line In New York

(June 23) - Christina reports:

"So I'm at the local Barnes & Noble looking at the music mags when I see an issue of "Performing Songwriter" with a cover tribute to the late Laura Nyro. I've heard several comparisons of Tori to Laura so I bought it. In the article, the journalist states:

"Her [Laura] songs both reflected and defined the free spirit of the times, and her eclecticism and poetic sensibilities paved the way for such followers as Rickie Lee Jones, Kate Bush, Jane Siberry, Suzanne Vega, and TORI AMOS."

AND... the magazine also does a "Music Hall Spotlight" and guess which one it is!!!

The one and only "Bottom Line" in New York. As you and other EWF know, this is where Tori performed some of her songs live on the Little Earthquakes video. I also have one more Tori related sighting in the same issue--There is an ASCAP advertisement on the back page. There are several pictures of musicians and there is a picture of Willy Porter. Now if any of you out there had the privilege of seeing Willy open for Tori on the DDI tour you will know who he is and what an absolutely amazing musician he is. Tori has excellent taste!!! :) If any EWF have not picked up Willy's "Dog Eared Dream" and "The Trees Have Soul" I highly suggest doing so NOW!!! "

Tori Taught In School...

(June 23) - Helena E Kvarnstrom reports:

"I was looking through the eugene lang new school for social research (a tiny "avant garde" school in new york that's affiliated with parson's school of design) catalog for summer programs and there's a piano playing class specifcially for so-called "rock" artists (i have no idea why tori would be in this group, but anyway...) and tori was one of the four or five artists mentioned whose music you learn to play (the other ones were people like elton john and billy joel)."

Tori Quote On New Neil Gaiman Book

(June 20) - Daniel reports:

"Tori has a quote on the back of the new neil gaiman book called Neverwhere:

"I didn't ever want this book to end... Hunter, Islington, Door-these characters are a part of my life now. I see them when I turn corners." -Tori Amos

She is the second quote on the book, shoved between Tad Williams and Mark Frost. Other quotes came from: Christopher Moore, Peter Straub, Stephen King, and Clive Barker."

Very Small Mention In Glamour Magazine

(June 16) - Justine reports:

Toriphile Justine tells us about an article in July 1997 Glamour Magazine on page 81 called "POP MUSIC: Now a woman's world" which briefly refers to Tori. It simply says that these days it is not unusual to hear 10 female artists in a row like Alanis or Tori. They include an interesting 1996 statistic from Rolling Stone showing that women made up 61% of the top 20 albums in 1996.

Hootie Helped Fight Illegal Ticket Scalping For Tori!

(June 16) - HeyJupityr reports:

"I was checking to see if there were any new news articles on Tori on AOL, lookit what I found" NOTE FROM MIKEWHY This story was also covered by Rolling Stone sometime around this time...:

NEW YORK (Variety) - New York's attorney general has found a secret weapon in the fight against crime in the music industry: Hootie and the Blowfish.

Last year, the band helped New York State Attorney General Dennis C. Vacco crack down on counterfeit and bootleg recordings. On Wednesday, Vacco disclosed that Hootie and the Blowfish helped bring to light an illegal ticket-scalping scheme involving concerts by Hootie, Alanis Morissette, TORI AMOS and other artists.

Joseph Nekola, the former head of the Jones Beach Theater ticket office, has been charged with stealing thousands of tix and selling them to brokers and friends at markups ranging from 35% to 100%.

Nekola allegedly reaped $500,000 through the illegal activity. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in jail and fines of up to $10,000 or double the amount of the illegal gain.

Vacco's office began an investigation into Jones Beach Theater, a popular seaside arena on Long Island, after receiving a complaint from Rusty Harmon, manager of Hootie and the Blowfish. The band was upset that tickets for the first 10 rows of their 1996 Jones Beach concerts were being sold by ticket brokers charging markups of more than 1,000%. The attorney general found a similar pattern for 36 other concerts.

``This case has offered us a glimpse into the shady deals made in the entertainment world where the public suffers while insiders take advantage of their employment to make huge profits through thievery and bribery,'' Vacco said....

Tori Sighting On Documentary

(June 16) - Beth Winegarner reports to the RDT mailing list:

"In my ever-incessant quest to stay relevant, I'll mention something I heard tonight on this documentary called "When a Kid is Gay." This teenager was talking about how he and his dad were on bad terms 'cause he (the son) had just come out as gay. And he was saying, "Well, I wanted to listen to some music, some Tori Amos or something, but all my music was in the parlor where my dad was..." I mean, I was sad for the guy because he couldn't talk to his dad about it (it was a great documentary BTW, filmed in the Worcester, Mass area) but -- I mean he mentioned TORI! That was nifty."

Professional Widow Remix Featured On Three Different CD Compilations

(June 11) - Tom Sandberg reports:

"Professional Widow (Armand's Star Trunk - Radio Edit of course), is featured on two "new" Norwegian cd-compilations released by the extremely mainstream-inspired label EVA Records. The titles of the cd's are "Absolute Dance #5" and "Absolute Music #19". I don't know their catalogue-number or release date. Maybe you've heard it before, they were both released a couple of weeks back."

Melissa Pierorazio reports that Professional Widow can also be found in the U.S. on an compilation called Big Mix 97 (37 Dance Hits).

Tori Inspired An Episode Of The X Files / In X Files Comic Book

(June 9) - Sara Gray reports:

"The season finale of the X Files debuted recently. Every show, there is a little theme-music opening which shows weird images and finishes with the show's catch phrase "The Truth is Out There" flashed on the screen. If an episode is especially important in the ongoing mythology, a different phrase is shown, like "Deny Everything" or "Trust No One". The finale's was "Believe the Lie". This brought me right back to lyrics from Space Dog: "and to the one you thought was on your side she can't understand she truly believes the lie"

This went right along with the story in the episode! So, either Chris Carter is a secret Toriphile, or there's some sort of strange conspiracy going on..."

Also, "In the X Files comic book series Special #1, there is a, well, quoting of Happy Phantom. It was playing while a truck driver was carting a supposed recovery of the first hominid's remains (nicknamed "Eve"). Sort of fitting a Tori song would be used in this issue, because it was about the spirit of the first woman on the planet."

Tori Appears On The Poetry Web Site 'The Equinox'

(June 2) - Jeannie H reports:

"I was at a poetry site called the equinox, and everytime I go there, there's a different lyric from a song by anyone from garbage to none other than Tori. So I get there today, and the lyric is "so you found a girl who thinks really deep thoughts what's so amazing about really deep thoughts boy you best pray that I bleed real soon how's that thought for ya?"

So I looked around some more, and in a section called Scattered Words, I think, there is a cute picture of Tori, and some of the lyrics to Bells for Her.

Now, as far as I know, the words from SATY are not always there, but used in succession with lyrics from songs by Garbage, the Wallflowers, R.E.M., and I think Smashing Pumpkins, and more."

YM Magazine Suggests You Listen To Tori On The Way To The Lilith Fair (though Tori will NOT be at Lilith Fair.)

(May 29) - Jeanette Holland reports:

On page 115 of the July issue of YM magazine, there is a chart of "Super Summer Musicfests" and Lilith Fair is featured. The chart tells things like what to wear, what to expect, what to bring, what to listen to on the way, and what to watch before. The Lilith Fair column says, in this order:

    What to wear:
Just come as your own bad self. If you're buggin' about your look, you're missing the point.

    What to expect:
Sarah McLachlan, Jewel, Lisa Loeb, Suzanne Vega, Emmylou Harris, The Cardigans, and more.

    What to bring:
The tissues. At least one song is going to remind you of that total jerk who broke your heart.

What to listen to on the way:
Your fave girl rockers, like Alanis Morissette, TORI AMOS, and Fiona Apple.

    What to watch before:
Go out and rent pro-girl flicks like Waiting to Exhale, Clueless, and The Craft.

Tori Quoted In The Role-Playing Game 'Werewolf'

(May 28) - Joe 'Felix' Bopp reports:

"I play a role-playing game called Werewolf with some friends of mine. I just bought the newest book for the game & on page 76, they have a quote from Tori! It says...'these precious things let them bleed let them wash away these precious things let them break their hold over me' [Werewolf is] an interesting game, kinda violent, set in modern day, but with werewolves, werecats, etc., vampires, wizards, & all sorts of monsters. They have a lot of contemporary references, because these are modern people who happen to be all these critters. So, sometimes, they put quotes in with certain headings in the rulebooks. The "Precious Things" quote was with a heading that said "Traits". Traits, in the game, are what determines what a character is, physically, mentally & spiritually."

Ironic Tori-Related Weather

(May 28) - Gina Senior reports:

"Just something I found ironic...I live in Texas and we had some really bad thunderstorms last night with some killer tornadoes...well, I was watching the weather channel, and there was a tornado warning for a town in Louisiana called "Tallulah"! Coincidence? I think not!!!" NOTE FROM MIKEWHY: Some of the tornados that ripped through Texas were brutal that day. I hope no Toriphiles got hurt.

Tori #23 on KROQ's Top 106.7 Artists Of All Time

(May 25) - Mireya Ingham reports:

"I just thought I should let you know that I heard a 'Tori' block on the radio on Memorial Day Weekend. KROQ (106.7fm) [in Los Angeles CA] had a Top 106.7 Artists Of All Time List playing, and as I was praying and begging them to play Tori, low and behold, guess who I heard?!? It was a compilation of Tori's interviews, followed by "God", "SATY", "Cornflake Girl", and the cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Turns out, she was artist number 23! Still not as high as I would like, but nonetheless, a great ranking. Finally, people are waking up......I hope. :) " NOTE FROM MIKEWHY: I think they played the countdown at least 3 times over the holiday weekend, and they did not always play the same Tori songs!

Tori On A Cup Sold At Amaco Gas Station!

(May 21) - Jill (voted as most likely in her graduating class ('97) to "quit school to follow Tori Amos") reports:

"Amaco gas stations (or at least the one I was at in Kansas City today) is selling special cups at their soda fountains. The cups are 32 oz. size and are being sold to celebrate 20 years of SPIN magazine. They feature the covers of various SPIN issues (covers w/ Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kiss....) but the most important one being the March 96 cover of Tori! =) The pictures aren't that big, but its cool enough for 99 cents. I have no idea how widespread this offer is, when it started, or when it ended"

Holy Angels High School Uses "Yes, Anastasia" To Celebrate Women's Rights

(May 21) - Joe (MetroJoe82@aol.com) reports on the following unique interpretation of a Tori song. Feel free to email Joe if you would like more info:

"Holy Angels, a Catholic girls's school in New Jersey was having a women's right assembly in their auditorium. My good friends Kelly and Jillian told me all about it. They said that the assembly had several candles lit, a speech by a teacher, and then finally, every student sat in silence as the teacher announced their assignment to follow would be a song called "Yes, Anastasia," by Tori Amos...they were passed out sheets of paper with certain lyrics to the song and interpretations of it. This is what the paper said EXACTLY.

    "YES, ANASTASIA" by Tori Amos

Thought I'd been through this in 1919
Counting the tears of ten thousand men
Gathered them all, but my feet are slipping
Theres something we left on the windowsill
    Theres something we left yes

    >>These lines refer to the year 1919, the year before women were granted the right to vote. For years, women had fought for suffrage and when it was attained they naively believed that they would be treated equally. They, however, had "left something" on the "windowsill", for they had not begun to treat themselves as equals. How could anyone else be expected to do so?

Thought she deserved no less than she'd give
Happy Birthday, her bloods on my hands
Its kind of a shame because I did like that dress
Its funny the things you find in the rain, the things
    That you find, yes
    In the date mines
In the knot still in her hair
    On the bus,
I am on my way down
All the girls seem to be there

    >>These next lines illustrate the songwriter's belief that women are responsible for uplifting our own gender. She uses the striking visual image of harming someone physically ("Bloods on my hands") to symbolize the social stagnation that women encourage when they refuse to stand up for their rights.

We'll see how brave you are
We'll see how fast you'll be running
    Come along little darling
    Come along with me
We'll see how brave u are

    >>The final lyrics condemn the harmful effects of conforming to the self oppression of these women. The song challenges these "girls" to stand up for their own rights and to be "brave" against the injustices of society.

PS Thanks to Kelly and David for this information."

95.5 WBRU in Providence Sses Tori As Background Music

(May 19) - Alison Rosen reports:

"This isn't a really unusual Tori experience, but my favorite radio station 95.5 WBRU in Providence uses one of the remixes of Professional Widow as background music for their chatting every single afternoon! I get all hyper and want them to play the whole song (or at least acknowledge that it's Tori related...) but no!"

Tori Appears On 'Girl Power'

(May 15) - UK Toriphile Amelia reports:

"The remix version of "Professional Widow" appears on the UK album "Girl Power", a selection of top tunes hand-picked by the Spice Girls. A clip from the video also appears in the U.K. TV commercial, prompting me to wonder just what exactly is going on on the Spice Girls/Tori front! "

Kim Rygiel & Kathryn A Masci add that they heard about this on MTV News in the U.S.

Sean details what MTV said (You can also check out the story at the MTV web site):

"If you can't wait for the film to debut [a new movie with the Spice Girls], you can get your fix with a new import double CD titled "Spice Girls Present the Best Girl Power Album Ever," which is in stores now. The collection compiles a 100 percent Spice Girls-Approved assortment of hits from female artists including Aretha Franklin, Tori Amos, Neneh Cherry, Salt N Pepa, and "The X-Files" Gillian Anderson "

Tori Appears regularly on Israeli Radio

(May 14) - Bloodrose reports:

"Radio 88 in Israel has the habit of playing the not-usualy-radio- played Tori Tracks, such as Mother, Leather and Pretty Good Year. The almost get me by surprise, playing them with no appearant reason, and certainly no requests.

Another Radio that gives a fair Tori coverage is the IDF (Israeli Defense Force) Radio. When UtP came out, one of the station's broadcatsters (who is particularly fond of Tori and her music) used to play UtP from Baker Baker till the end of the CD, on almost each and every one of his shows. Now, Tori gets one to five plays on the weekends on a calm music weekends the station has."

Tori At A Radio Shack Near You

(May 14) - Mark W. reports:

"My friend Shawn works at Radio Shack, and there is a video they play at the store that advertises Radio Shack products and it has music videos, sports, stand-up comedians, etc. on it. Anyway, one of the videos on it is Tori's Past the Mission, where she's walking through the village with all of the girls. However, all of the videos are shortened so it doesn't have the part that begins "Hey they found a body." So Tori now plays in Radio Shacks across the nation.."

Tori Expands Into Rural USA

(May 11) - Peter W. Zubaty reports:

"i was at a seedy little convenience store out in the country near vevay, indiana. those working at the store and also those patronizing are a strange breed of people whom might affectionately be called "rednecks" or "hilljacks". at any rate, not the most enlightened folks in the world. yet on the loudspeaker in the store i was amazed to hear 'silent all these years'. i was so taken aback! i figure if they can listen to tori, there might yet be hope for this world."

"Cornflake Girl" Used In Commercial For Alternative Radio Station Z104.5, The Edge

(May 9) - Pam Vue reports:

"Lately, I've been hearing the "cornflake girl" song used in the alternative rock station, Z104.5 the edge, down here. They put out a commercial for the morning show, the edge, which comes on at 8am here in Tulsa with host Tom something (the same dude who does modern rock live). And if i'm lucky, i get to hear that sweet commercial every once in a blue moon.

Right after the song 'til i hear from you' by the gin blossoms, you hear "this is not, this is not really happening" part and that goes into "you betcha your life it is" into "never was a cornflake girl....." It's short but it's GOOD to hear her on the radio. Especially here in Tulsa!!!"

Tori's Music Heard At The Soho Coffee Shop In D.C.

(May 9) - Jennifer Li reports:

"Last tues, some friends and I went out to get coffee. We went to Soho (coffee shop in DC), and as soon as I walked in, I heard In The Springtime of His Voodoo. Later I realized they were playing the entire Boys For Pele cd. Someone there has good taste."

Tori Mentioned On The Tracie Ullman show

(May 8) - Lori Adams & furry report:

"Just wanted to tell you that I was watching the 'Tracie Ullman show' today [This show can be seen on the cable channel HBO in the U.S.] (the one when she was a famous musician) and Tori was mentioned. I can't remember what was exactly said, but I'll sum it up. The band was fighting and Tracie was saying how she was just going to quit. But, one of the band members told her that she was an inspiration to other musicans. Then she referred to Tori, by saying something like "You've got to stick with it. Tori Amos is a inspiration to other musicians out there, and you are the that too." It was really cool, because it took me by surprise when I heard her name. Also, there were a couple of posters of my second fave musician, Paula Cole. :)"

Tori Track On Dutch CD called 'What's Up? Volume 3'

(May 8) - Dennis Snelders reports:

"I saw a Dutch CD called 'What's Up? Volume 3'. It was a compilation CD with all different types of Alternative music. And guess who was on it? Our goddess! And the funny thing is, the track included on the cd was not a single-song (or whatever you call it), but a B side: Smells Like Teen Spirit!! BTW, it was the last track."

Tori Track Possibly Sampled On Delerium's Album

(May 8) - Kelvin (TioRamos) reported to the Torinews mailing list:

"Delerium, a band on the Nettwerk label comprised of Bill Leeb and Rhys Fuller (aka Front Line Assembly, Synasthaesia, etc.) recently put out their latest CD entitled Karma. Track 11, "'til the end of time" features the drum loop from Tori's "Caught a Lite Sneeze" at certain points. (Some have disagreed, saying that it is just a loop that sounds familiar to CALS, but there is *no* doubt in my mind that that is what it is).

This is a good CD regardless of its connection to Tori, IMHO. It features one delicious track with Sarah Mclachlan on vocals, and others with Kristy Thirsk (Rose Chronicles) and Camille Henderson (Sarah's bkgrnd vocalist). Check it out if you like Enigma-like ambient stuff. As a Delerium fan, I am a bit disappointed with it, since it sounds too much like their previous release, Semantic Spaces; I wanted to hear some more new samples, loops, and patches rather than many of the same ones they used for the prior CD. It is still a CD worth buying, and a great introduction to Delerium. "

Pele Sited in "More Super Scary Stories for Sleepovers, # 6 "

(May 8) - Rebecca reports:

"I was watching some kids one night, and they asked me to read them a story out of this book of scary stories. The name of the book is "More Super Scary Stories for Sleepovers, # 6 ". The author is Q.L Pearce, and the name of the story is "The Wrath of Pele". It's the fifth story in the book. I think you can find it in the Young Adult or Middle School Readers section in the bookstore. The story was about this stupid boy who goes to Hawaii with his family for a vacation. He learns the story about Pele, the volcano goddess, and about how powerful she is and how he shouldn't tick her off. Being the typical horror story protaganist, he ignores the advice and steals a rock from this shrine that is dedicated to Pele ( or something like that...I know he took a rock)... Anyways, to make a short story shorter, Pele gets back at the little kid..."

Alanis Mentions Tori In A Couple Of Books

(May 8) - There are several books on Alanis Morissette that mention how Tori inspired her. I am a bit confused by which book says what, and they all seem to be refering to different variations of the same quote! Here is how I currently understand it:

Julia Kun reports that there is a book called 'Ironic: The Alanis Morissette Story' by Barry Grills. "It is a biography on Alanis and has a few Tori references. There are two pages talking about artists that Alanis admires. There is a whole page dedicated to Tori talking about her life and the pain that 'Me and a Gun' caused her and how she dealt with it through her songs/albums. On the next page is a picture of the Crucify EP cover. Also on another page there is a quote from Alanis that goes something like this (I can't remember the exact words): 'When I first listened to Little Earthquakes (Tori Amos) I was lying on my living room floor. And I bawled my eyes out. It was so emotional.'"

Mike Harris wrote me with the exact Alanis quote from above, "The first time I heard Tori Amos's Little Earthquakes, I played the record in its entirety, lying on my living room floor, and I just bawled my eyes out. It felt like the first time I could relate to a woman on that level through her music, and I was so grateful. I felt that she'd been through a lot of the things I'd gone through." This quote originated in a book or article called "She's A Big Girl Now" by Tom Doyle.

Kathryn adds this variation of the quote that she retrieved from an Alanis web page, "I cried the first time I heard it. [Little Earthquakes] That someone could write so openly and honestly opened my eyes to a whole new world."

Toriphile Nick adds the following 2 references:

    1) A biographical book called "The Story of Alanis Morissette" written by **KALEN ROGERS** who wrote the fabulous Tori biography "All These Years." It says on page 23:

Recalling a breakthrough moment when she came to the realization that songwriting could be a way of purging and growing, she cites the first time she heard fellow artist Tori Amos's Little Earthquakes album, saying "I played the record in its entirety, lying on my living room floor, and I just bawled my eyes out ... I was so grateful."

    2) A CD-sized book with interview CD of Alanis (It's similar to the Tori one). On page 53 there is a picture of Tori at her piano with the caption: Alanis on Little Earthquakes by Tori Amos: "I cried the first time I heard it.". In the book, it states on page 52:
