Interview Transcript

Thanks to rainne laffety for sending this to me.

Graham: now listen ladies and gentlemen, we do have a real musical treat for you tonight, it's the original cornflake girl, it is songstress tori amos

[sorta fairytale comes on in the background]

tori: hello. [waves to audience] hi.

Graham: wow, it's tori amos... no... proper! Mel and sue... and then tori amos!

Mel&Sue: oh now we're relegated, nothing!

Graham: no, because I... [leans over and touches tori's hand]

Tori: touch touch touch touch [holds out her hands for graham to touch]

Graham: [takes hold of her hands] much touching! We've done a lot of touching today

Tori: [whispers] yeah, last night! [laughs]

Graham: now, you've obviously very successful now, but you were one of those freaky child prodigies weren't you? You were brilliant, really really young!

Tori: [sighs and sweeps her hand to brush it off]

Graham: but you were weren't you?

Tori: I can't say that.

Graham: But they did send you to a posh school for clever people?

Tori: I played at the Conservatory when I was 5, yes. I was studying to be a classical pianist and then they booted me out.

Graham: now was that the Peabody?

Tori: yes

Graham: ah, now what we did... because often we get in contact with schools for guests... [tori looks around at the audience quite apprehensively] oh no no no! just to ask for pictures! [tori looks slightly relieved] you know like "can we have pictures of you in school days blah blah?"... oh don't worry we don't have any pictures of you.

Tori: [looks relieved again] ohh okay!

Graham: but we do have a lovely email from a lady at the Peabody. Her name is Margaret. She says[reads from email]; "of course I know the name tori amos. Peabody is very proud of her..." do you think... they kicked you out though didn't they?

Tori: Yes they did!

Graham: [laughs] well they had no photos of you!

Tori: [laughs] good!

Graham: [reads from email again] "however, if you would like a picture or 2 which will evoke a few memories for tori, we can find those. For instance, we have a lovely spiral staircase that every student remembers..."

Tori: [throws her head back laughing]

Graham: ...and god bless Margaret she did send us a picture of the spiral staircase! [holds up picture]

Tori: [laughs and claps] yes! That's it!

Graham: Is it evoking memories?

Tori: ummmmm.. no!

Graham: you were only a child... but now listen, new album. [holds up a copy of the album] New album is out next week and the single that you are going to do for us, A Sorta Fairytale, is out at the moment?

Tori: Yes

Graham: oh, can I just say that I got this album for free, you'll have to buy it... [reads label on album cover] "over 74 minutes of music" on here

Me&Sue: ohhh top dot tori!

Tori: [makes faces and says something which is drowned out by mel and sue making a lot of noise]

Graham: Now we all want it, 74 minutes! Now listen, that's almost all we have time for tonight, but you are going to play us out with your fantastic new single, so if you'd just like to go over there and get ready.

Tori: okay thank you. [hugs everyone and walks away]

Graham: isn't she pretty!
