Tori on The Chart Show
April 25, 1998

On Saturday, April 25, 1998, a retrospective and interview with Tori was aired on The Chart Show in the U.K. on ITV. I have reports on the show from Toriphiles Mike Gray and Ali Lehr, and a few great screen shots from Mike Gray.

From Mike Gray

Tori was just on the Chart Show - the best interview I've seen them do :-

on "Spark"

"I don't know about making pop videos. I know about you know, making little films. That's what I try to do. What it was really about is this woman is in a situation and you find out later she was in the trunk of this car, and miraculously this car accident saves her life. To have your hands tied behind your back and be blindfolded to have that experience and really have to get from one end of Dartmoor to the other it was... you hear better, your instincts get better.."

on "PW (Van Helden Mix)"

"When you agree to let somebody do a dance remix of your work, if you are not totally controlled by the record company, which I am not, they have to get permission to get my tapes. And I was very happy to give my tapes to Van Helden. And when I heard it, we were having a marguerita on the bus, and I'm telling you, I did this... and you know how you do bus-surfing? We were in the mid-west, and I was like, 'Honey! This is fun!'"

on "Talula"

Yeah, I do write about stuff I'm going through, but I think you've got to find a giggle somewhere in stuff that would scare the poop outta ya. That's what fascinates me.

on her videos

"The way I look at videos is if you're going to make one, make something with integrity and that's different for different people."

"We just seem to make videos sometimes where I get hoisted in mid-air and the chain's about ready to break and you have this thing, this harness and you know what it would be like to have a chastity belt on, and they've stolen the key, and your suspended up there for 20 minutes and all you want is some french-fries, I don't know how I get into those situations, but that was Cornflake Girl."

From Ali Lehr

(Tori, Spark Video still playing behind her)

"I don't know about making pop videos, I know about making little films and that's what I try to do. And I think what it was really about was, umm you know, this women was in the situation and you find out later that she was in the trunk of the car and miraculously this car accident saves her life."

"To have your hands tied behind you back and to be blindfolded, you know to have that experience, you really have to get from one end of Dartmoor to the other. Umm it was, you know, you hear about it, your instincts get better."

[A Clip of the PW remix video]

(Video still plays in background)

"When you agree to let somebody do umm a dance remix of your work. If you umm are not totally controlled by the record company, which I am not, they have to get my permission to get my tapes and I was very happy to give my tapes to Van Helden. And when I heard it we were having a Margarita on the bus and I'm telling you I did that rocking, you know how you do bus surfing (Tori shows us). We were in the mid-west and I heard that thing and honey I was just like 'this is fun'"

[A clip of the Talula video]

"Yeah I do write about stuff that I'm going through, but I kinda, I think you've gotta find the giggle sometimes in stuff that would scare the poop outta ya. That's what fascinates me.

[A clip of Caught a Lite Sneeze]

(in a box on the screen - Tori told us: "The way I look at videos as if you're going to make one, make something with integrity and that's different for different people.")

[A clip of the UK version of Cornflake Girl]

"We just seem to make videos sometimes when I'm either being suspended, hoisted up in mid-air. And umm the chain's about ready to break, and you've got this thing, you know this harnass and all of a sudden you know what it would be like to umm have a chassy(?) belt on you, and they've stolen the key. And you're just like suspended up there for 20 mins and all you want is some french fries. And how, I don't know how I get into those situations but that was Cornflake Girl."
